BMA to clear footpaths on Silom Road

BANGKOK, 23 May 2016 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is planning to clear footpaths on Silom Road, after receiving complaints from pedestrians.

A meeting was held between BMA officials, traffic police, relevant agencies and more than 600 street vendors.

The BMA previously asked vendors to sell their products only at night, as the sidewalks see more foot traffic during the day. Some vendors have continued to flout regulations and set up shop during the day, even selling bootleg goods.

When the footpaths become too crowded, many pedestrians are forced to walk on the road. The vendors' failure to comply with the BMA has prompted city hall to decide not to extend the grace period.

Despite the decision, the BMA has yet to determine when the current grace period will end. Another round of negotiations between the BMA and street vendors is expected to take place soon.

They're actually under the control of the BMA as evidenced by the successful clearance of other areas by the BMA. Promulgating the "local mafia control and protection" myth isn't helpful or accurate.

On the other hand, the FBI can do a pretty good job cleaning up an area they had no vested interest in. Maybe the BMA, too?

It might be okay for some to cry that it's what the tourists come to see. But the tourists are temporary and don't have to put up with not being able to do the simple and uncomplicated task of walking from A to B in comfort all year long. And, as the article says, many are selling illegal goods. So arrest them. Why have protracted discussions and an endless grace period with people involved in illegal activity? I don't get it.

Perhaps one authority is trying to get rid of them while another is still collecting stall permit money every week. Things are not as simple & straight-forward as they seem here
