BANGKOK: -- A heavy Buddha's head is thought to be responsible for the collapse of a bank at the temple of Wat Sai Ma Neua in Nonthaburi yesterday.

The collapse of a 100 metre long section yesterday swallowed up the concrete head weighing many tons, a passenger van, a motorcycle and a pavilion for resting in.. They all ended up in the Chao Praya river reported Daily News.

Inspecting the scene Thursday, Nonthaburi governor Nisit Jansomwong ordered a road closed to all traffic and a section still intact to be shored up without delay. An emergency inspection is due to take place at the site today to find out exactly what happened.

The head of the Buddha that was about to be gilded was part of a temple feature that was being prepared on the bank. Its weight is thought to be the reason behind the collapse along with heavy rains in the area in recent days.

The owner of the Toyota van that was gobbled up in the collapse said that he had just parked by the bank's edge. Prayong Thongchan, 46, said: "I heard a few small noises then the whole thing gave way with a great bang and everything fell into the river." He managed to escape the collapse and was uninjured.

He had just parked there? It sounds to me as if the extra weight of the vehicle was the cause that triggered the catastrophe.

Very un-Thai to blame Buddha.

"A heavy Buddha's head is thought to be responsible for the collapse of a bank at the temple of Wat Sai Ma Neua in Nonthaburi yesterday."

When Buddha was still alive he never asked his followers to make statues or worship him in images. Instead he taught us to not have any attachment to anything - not even himself.

Buddha said that the best way to worship him was to follow his teachings. And that after he passed away, after his "Nippana" or "Nirvana" is teachings would take his place.

" Instant Karma's gonna get you Gonna knock you right on the head."

Unfortunately, not everyone understands his teachings.

But where would you go to to pray for money, fame and fortune?

If there are no golden statues, I can't pray. And that doesn't benefit 'me'.

They forgot to bless the riverbank and the head with nine monks before the event, that's why it collapsed! And they also forgot to sprinkle holy water over the place....And did they surround the head with lucky rope?

Well who would have thought that a temple construction site would have to follow any form of normal safety precautions and building standards. Surely Buddha images are protected by amulets, not the laws of physics.

Thank goodness the governor was nearby and able to instruct the Thai professionals whose job it is to build and maintain roads that they should close the road to traffic and shore up the non-collapsed section. I imagine they wouldn't have had a clue what to do without him.

You just never know when a district governor is going to come in handy...
