EC: 110,699 eligible voters already registered to vote outside constituency

BANGKOK, 1 July 2016 (NNT) – The Election Commission has revealed that over a hundred thousand eligible voters have already registered to cast a vote in the public referendum, outside their respective constituencies.

The EC said on Thursday that, between May 1 and June 29, a total of 110,699 eligible voters had completed the registration to allow them to cast their votes outside their constituency.

According to the EC, 40,975 of them registered with respective district registrar offices while 69,724 others did so online.

The registration of those who will not be able to cast votes at their designated polling booths is set to end at midnight on June 30.

The EC conceded that the website for early voting registration had been temporarily down around noon on Thursday due to high traffic.

Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said that, after mail and online registration is closed, those who wish to cast their votes outside their constituencies must register to do so in person at any district offices before July 7.

Absolutely true. It's a very small proportion.

For local and general elections a huge number of people return to their home provinces to vote. I'm not sure this will be the case for this referendum, however. Shouldn't imagine there will be any 500 baht notes handed out.

No minimum voter turnout required. Would be a great idea!

Referendum only requires a majority vote of all people who voted for passage. EC goal is 80% turnout.

The EC proposed that passage be based on "yes" from a majority of eligible voters regardless of how many actually voted. After "guidance" from CDC, it agreed to a majority of actual votes cast to determine the fate of the draft charter. This was the same criteria used in the 2007 Constitution Referendum.

I've not seen the number of eligible Thai voters overseas to know whether 110,699 registered Thais is insignificant or not. Perhaps you have a link to such information. But if Thais overseas do not actually vote, their vote is lost or invalidated for whatever reason, the number of registered Thais overseas becomes irrelevant.
