What happens when a working permit is ended in advance?

My wifes working permit might be ended in advance. Me and our kids are following on her working visa. What do we need to do to be able to stay in Thailand as tourists? How long can we stay after the WP is ended in normal cases? Do we need to leave by air and apply for a tourist visa or can it be arrenged by the local immigration bureau?

You will need to go to a nearby embassy or consulate.

You can travel overland to the ones in Laos or Penang Malaysia.

You should not have a problem getting them unless you are from country whose citizens can only get visas there.

You may know this but many people seem not to be aware that when the job ends any extension of stay ends immediately and a letter of employment termination should be obtained and presented to immigration to cancel extension of stay that day.  This is the meaning of the new form most offices have everyone sign when extending now (that extension ends when the reason for it ends).  They used to allow 7 days to leave but unless from one stop center there is no grace period anymore.

You  can go to immigration to have your extensions canceled few days before the date shown on a letter from the employer stating the date the job ens and the will post date the cancellation to that date so you have time to leave the country.

No, immigration does not allow this.

No, this does not count with an employment extension.

A new application for an investment extension cam be made if the criteria are .
