Hello everyone, I apologize if this has been covered before but I wanted to get a solid answer before I try to get my next visa.
I have a herniated disc in my spine that I am receiving treatment for here in Chiang Mai and it makes it extremely painful to travel any distance.

I entered Thailand from the US with a normal 30 day tourist visa on arrival on November 2nd and then extended it 30 days here in Chiang Mai. It expires on January 3rd now and I would like to get at least another 30 days in Thailand  (longer would be preferred to continue my treatments)

If I fly to say Kuala Lumpur on Jan 3rd can I get a new tourist visa in the airport at KUL and fly back the same day and then get another 30 day extension on that new visa here in Chiang Mai? Or am I only allowed the 30 day extension one time on the visa I currently have?

Would it be the same for a land crossing into Laos?

Thank you so much for any help!

If you leave the country and return by any method you will get 30 days Visa Exempt (It is not a Visa)

This can be extended by 30 days at Immigration.

It appears you were initially admitted to Thailand on a Visa Exempt entry for 30 days.

There is nothing "thai visa" related to do in the airport at KUL.

If you have only recently come to Thailand, there should be no problem receiving another Visa Exempt entry for 30 days at a Thai airport upon your return.  But be sure to have 20K Baht in cash or travelers checks (value in any currency) to show, in case Immigration asks any questions.

You may be asked by the airline to show a ticket leaving Thailand within 30 days to board your flight back to Thailand, because you do not have a Thai Visa in advance of your trip.  This policy varies by airline.

You were not issued a tourist visa, you received a 30 day visa exempt stamp, which you then extended for another 30 days.

You can repeat this process again as already advised above, however if you think your treatment could take some time, I would advise you visit a Thai Embassy/Consulate (maybe Vientiane, Lao) and obtain a Tourist Visa which will allow a stay of 60 days, which can be extended another 30 days giving 90 days in total.

Thank you everyone for the replies! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer such a newbie question.

I heard from someone that it may be possible to go to the Thai Embassy here in Chiang Mai and state my case with a letter from a doctor and I can get a new 30 day visa exempt or some other form of visa without leaving the country? This seems improbable but I thought I would ask.

You could get a medical extension, I don't think that is the correct term for it however this is basically what it means

Immigration do not give these out lightly however, you need a doctors letters etc, your best bet would be to visit your hospital to see if they could help and see if your condition prevents you from travelling, if not then it's highly unlikely Immigration would issue you a extension on this basis
