For all those saying Chiang Mai has 'lost its charm', let me suggest that it is you who are losing your charm.
Chiang Mai is simply a growing city with all the inherrent associated problems. People still move here, and they still move away... And life goes on for the rest of us.
What's the big deal?
Simple mind, simple thoughts...

Again I think spirituality is a personal experience, and most definitely not related to any kind of development. Sure, Chiang Mai is growing rapidly, that's because it's a nice place! New buildings and roads get built, that's about it. How does that reduce spirituality? Drive up Doi Suthep, past the templle, past the first hilltribe village, then watch the sign pointing right into a short forest trail, then you get to what once was a pagoda or little temple, completely overgrown with ferns and stuff. Go sit there and meditate and find spirituality. As the crow flies you're only a couple miles from the city center.
Cheers,
Chanchao
If you cannot experience the spirituality of Chiang Mai, for which I don't blame you, then discussing this matter is of no use. I only want to say this : if greed gets the overhand in a city (this may sound Buddhist, which I am not) then it assaults the soul of a city in its core. No worries though, we can still eat at "Mike's Burger".

I think it improved loads too.
Of course the feeling has changed. Think back about how you felt the first couple of weeks after meeting your current wife/girlfriend/partner/etc, compared to today. Chances are you felt more excitement the first couple of weeks, but more love now.
It's a change alright, but especially a change within yourself. The excitement isn't coming back, though.
Cheers,
Chanchao
Actually I did enjoy the first 7 or so years the most in Chiang Mai. Due to recent heavy "development", the spirituality which gave Chiang Mai its typical colour, is not so "overwhelming" as before. But the question if Chiang Mai is still a good place to be depends on the person who you are and what you are looking for in Chiang Mai.

OK guys....N` gals.
I was last in Chiang mai in 1988.....I am getting old!
Just curious : what was your impression of Chiang Mai in 1988 ?
-
Having been around in Chiang Mai for some 10 years, I can only say that Chiang Mai is "going to the dogs", especially since a year of 2/3. I would give up all the cheese, cheap phonecalls and internet usage (and instead internet use a FAX machine) if that would bring back the atmosphere that I felt in Chiang Mai when I first came here. Although the typical Chiang Mai atmosphere still can be felt, it is getting "thinner", thanks to "development".

Better not go there, only if you want to get stuffed up with anti-depressants after an initial consult of 3 minutes by this former "professor of psychiatry". Next consults will last 2 minutes. One would like to know how many books (3 or 4 ???) one has to study before one can become a professor of psychiatry here in Chiang Mai...Unless you want to undergo this experience and become a wiser man afterwards this is not a good thing to do. Be warned !
I think you won't last long on Thai Visa.
I suppose you have experience with the good doctor?
My friend's wife has been treated by him for the last ten years, and I have never known of a more genuine doctor, helpful, friendly. Contrary to your sick sentiments above, his consults last from 20 minutes to several hours. He has done house calls at all times of the day and night, without charge. He provided her with treatment free, including expensive drugs, for over two years after my friend went completely bankrupt. He never turns away when his help is needed.
Your post is a little bit smelly ! Maybe you can tell me in your 3rd post which TV username you normally use ?
For the rest, I only can hope that "JxP" will tell us one year from now, after having swallowed his umptieth pill, that his treatment by dr. Pairat has been one of the best things which has happened to him in his life !

Is this clinic towards doi suthep or towards kad suan keaw??? where is it exactly??
It is on the left hand side going towards Doi Sutep, about three doors past the traffic lights at the end of Sirimankala Road, lower right of square B2 on this map.

What is an entrance level course? You mean an intro to TEFL???
Swann's Practical English Usage is the 'Bible' of grammar
Thank you for your reply !
-
The tefl is easy for a non speaker, you probably know more grammer than the average Native speaker.
Native speakers probably need it more.
So what's the reason that almost all schools emphasize they only want native English speakers ?
-
What about non-native English speakers, assuming their English is reasonably well, how easy/difficult would it be to do a Tefl course ?
And what are their chances on the job market ?
-
What would be a good book to prepare oneself for the entrance level of a TEFL course ?
-
Any recommendations on TEFL courses in Chiang Mai ? If there are more options, which one would be easier to do for a non-native English speaker ?

Is there a shop or company in Chiang Mai which sells sound reducing material which can be wrapped around (noisy) water pipes, or is there another solution to solve the noisiness ?

The reason why WETV did cancel STAR World and FOX News (glad I don't have to look at the repulsive face and opinions of Bill O'Reilly anymore) is that UBC has bought the exclusive rights to broadcast these channels. The channels WETV did add have less quality, I think they have about 6 cartoon channels now ?
I remember from many years ago, WETV did have CNN (not the cheap headlines version they did add recently) and CNBC, so I could enjoy Jay Leno and Conan (I forgot his last name) on saturday night. Also they had Star World and Star Movies, if I am not kidding myself. Those were the days !

I would like to know where acupuncture is being practiced in Chiangmai. Also if it's "electro-acupuncture" or acupuncture without using electricity. Any recommendations or comments on rendered services ?

I am almost 50 years. Although practising gymnastical exercises for many years, since about a year I encounter a general stiffness in my body which just won't go away, because of the aging process, I assume.
What kind of remedy/physical exercises are good dealing with such stiffness ?

What would be a good place to get a Thai Visa while staying in Chiangmai. I heard that Vientiane doesn't have a good reputation. Is China a good option or are there better possibilities ?
