Exactly, someone has to pay for the added pleasure of not just listening to motorcy’s, in preference to quality live music. That’s fair.

The first bucket is free in most places. My apologies as I failed to mention that.

I don't get it , what the motorcy's have to do with pay for ice ?

But the op was in Thailand where a large bag of ice maybe 10kgs is 25 baht of in some shops 35 baht, even the cheap noodle shops give free ice and water with a 35 baht bowl of noodles. 40 baht is a rip off.

No idea where you live but now , when you get it cheap, a bag of ice it a least 30 Baht if you live outside a town same me you pay 40 - 45 Baht. Some places no delivery and you drive 15 km for a few pack of ice. I agree 40 baht is a rip off I pay the same in a disco.

That makes 80 Baht in Total. And I know that Farangs like to complain about 80 Baht for a beer but never mention that they get ice for free.

You will find most of everything you might need (computer, doctor, dentist...) in Ubon city, not in Sisaket city however...there is a big difference in development and wealth between both cities.

As far as living in a remote village is concerned, it is first and foremost a matter of taste and personality.

I visited Hong Kong, which I hated like I hated Monaco, because I don't feel good in a concrete jungle.

But for other people, it is the opposite...they hate nature.

By the way, you will see that most Isaan villagers are not nature friendly at all: they use massive quantities of pesticides, fertilizers, cut trees without replacing them and kill all the wild animals they can, and would gladly cover most of the land with cement.

While in Kantharalak, you might enjoy to visit the Asoke Community which is still living in the traditional Thai way, while being much more productive than the farmers around.

Your capacity to live and stay in an Isaan village will depend on how much you can live alone...I personaly spend months at a time without speaking to a foreigner, since there are none in my area...and that doesn't bother me, I never think about it.

Yet, do not expect to have with local villagers the kind of conversation you can have in Hong Kong, not only because of the language, but mostly because of the content which may seem rather childish to many foreigners...for example, they will talk for hours about the lottery results, twice a month, and how they played number 47 while the winning number was 57, which was not so far...then they will move on to the ghost that a neighbor just saw last night, and so on.

I'm not sure what time you been in Sisaket ? I live here for nearly 20 years and I have no idea what you couldn't find in Sisaket (computer, doctor, dentist...). All we need is available here and some of our specialists get their patients tranfered from Ubon to Sisaket Including eye specialists and eye clinic in Goverment Hospital.

The three places are a little bit different, even the spoken languages. Sisaket grew from a town to a city with Big-C, Tesco, and Makro. It's Sisaket's school city and you'll see that at there's a hell lot of traffic in the morning and evening. People from Sisaket seem to be the worst drivers of Thailand.

You can find a few restaurants with farang food, Frank's Living in the Past ( a German guy who runs the longest existing farang restaurant), an American restaurant in the center, or Cuckoo's Nest, an Australian guy's restaurant called "Leo", different food, beers, wine, etc.", and a friendly Brit with a nice restaurant called Hong Kong Garden and a newish and stylish pub run by a Thai called Barco with farang food and lice music in the evening.

Unfortunately, is it really difficult to find decent Thai food. It's good to have somebody who knows the place.....

You will not see the best drivers, exceptions might be the foreigners and there're currently a lot of them. Sisaket is only 100 km away from Cambodia and Laos and it has its flair. There's a nice park with a zoo, pretty good to relax, but you'll need a vehicle to get around.

Most people in Sisaket province are farmers, depending on where you are you can find the usually Lao speaking people, but on the way to Surin also some Cambodians, they even have their schools and own dialect. Sisaket people are usually nice, of course will you find others who tell you the opposite......

Or maybe tell him what you want/don’t want on a pizza.
I know he does cater for the ‘unusual’. I once saw a guy have a ‘no tomato’ pizza there!!!!
Good idea to try Barco pizza. I have heard some good reports of them.

Just for you as information, the real original pizza ( Margherita, Pizza Neapolitan ) never get tomato only tomato sauce. Pizza is a traditional Italian dish consisting of a yeasted flatbread typically topped with tomato sauce and cheese and baked in an oven. It can also be topped with additional vegetables, meats, and condiments, and can be made without cheese.

Barco's been open for quite a while now. The pizzas are okay, but not great, also regarding my wife's taste. Some tables are outside to have a buri, the set up is pretty cool.

There's a corner where two youngish people make some music in the evening, the place is often packed, especially on weekends. Worth to give a try.

I prefere the pizza there compare with Peter's. Peter's pizza are full loaded and cheap but the typicall pizzataste is missing. No oregano and other spices. Sorry. I don't care about how much is on a pizza for me is the flavor important.

  10. Sorry butfor health reason I was not aible to post here.I'm surprised what goes on. Starbeam is back in Surin, Peppers ( Ubon ) got a new owner and Living in the Past is maybe closing soon ( No customers ) Is it all true ? Wish to be back in Thailand soon.

The other topics , what about Robinson is coming to Sisaket and Central Plazza to Ubon ?

  11. My friend ask me to leave message here :

We give up our stock of English written books every book 50 Baht / 3 books 100 baht.

Where ? At Nong & Frank's Livin in the Past Sisaket Wijitnakorn Road 1240/16 opposite 5th Bakery. The offer is only valid for self-collectors. I have no transport facilities and about 100 books are relatively heavy. I also think that the price is very cheap. The offer is valid until the end of April after which the books will find their peace in a beautiful bonfire

  12. My wife explains to me that Luk Krueng means half Thai, half something else.

It does not have the more or less negative intention of the word farang.

The equivalent in feelings for the farang word to bring it out of the negative and bring it on the same level as Luk Krueng would be the word Chautangchaat.

    You might say foreigner.

Even half Thai half Chinese are called Luk Krueng, so you might say us Chautangchaat are in elevated (?) company.

If a Thai call me farang I try to explain am not a farang, which means "Frank", but a chautangchaat.

Many times I see shame in the eyes of the farang caller.,

And many times a wai will be the answer.

A strange thing about the wife, she can always, I mean always, discern between Thai people and other Asians.

Vietnam people, Birma, Khmer, Indonesian, whatever, she sees it.

But with Lao people she makes mistakes, which is understandable.

Strange thing, when we are in Holland, many Indo's. the former Indonesian people, fully Asian and mixed, always start to talk in Malay to my wife.

Agreed, she looks more Asian as Sino Tai.

Luk Krueng, many parents whose children are married to westerners are absolutely bananas about grandchildren that are luk krueng.

The neighbours are mostly very jealous.

    Luk Krueng?

    Positive!

    Farang?

    Negative!!!!!

    Chautangchaat?

    Positive!!!!!!

Chautangchaat, interesting. I have never heard this before.

In Thai it is like this ชาวต่างชาติ right?

I have to remember that one.

But i am still a bit confused with the exact difference between chautangchaat and farang. Can you explain more please?

May the link will help : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farang

  13. Sorry and maybe is the xxxtime about the yellow housebook but there some confusing informations I found now I wouldt like to know how it works in this 3 provinces.

How much will it cost ?

Thank you in advance for some answers

  14. I was in there today for the first time. The host was really good. I ate a burrito for the first time in my life. I have to say it was ok, but not something that I would rush back for. The menu is very limited. But because other places in Sisaket have closed down, the owner has the chance to cash in on the good food franchise

"Uncle Willies" has gone, and also, the French place. And I can't believe that anyone thinks that the other eating hole, I think it is called Franks, is any good. Years ago I went there before he moved and the food was great, but in the last 6 months I have taken visitors there, and every time he has said sorry we are not serving food, ( and by the way this was only at lunch time), but the place was full of his friends (cronies) eating food. The man is a idiot.

I sincerely hope that the "Cuckoos Nest" succeeds, but I think that he will really have to expand his menu in order to do so. In my opinion, and what do I know, he would have been better looking for a double unit, where he would have had the room to have a bigger kitchen area, so that he would be comfortable in the space, and would be able to provide a very good menu. I doubt he will succeed in the cramped space that he now occupise.

But I do wish him, and his wife, the best of luck in their new venture.

I agree with you in certain points. I pretty much doubt that Frank's got many friends. The food- if he's got some- is most of the time not even worth to take a look at. The definition of German food there does not fit......

But that's up to him, he's been here long enough to understand what customers want. Or better said: What they don't want.

I had been at another place where they sold steaks near Kasikam bank. Guess it's Kantharalak road?

. We were alone, this guy, guess he's Swiss couldn't even say hello to us.

One of us had to go to the bathroom, the toilet in the middle of his kitchen and a unlock able door made the desire to empty the digestive system impossible.

I'm very sure that even two or three farlang places would make good money, if.................................coffee1.gif

    This guy is from Frankfurt.

Frank has nothing in common with East-Germans. He never made a lot of german food. The only german meals he is doing is schnitzel (great) , german bratwurst (nothing wrong) the last 2 month he starte with peasoup but thats all the rest of his food are pizza, pies, a great chilli con carne, a fantastic stew and sandwiches or rolls. He is not doing art cuisine, if you wont this you are better in Bangkok or other places. If you check google images about frank's german dishes. I can't see any different.

His toilet is not in the middle of the kitchen he cooks outside. The door I agree he must find a solution but also before he had a lock and some kids locked themselfs .

And by the way I think that he has many friends he helped a lot of people and allways he had been listen to their problems.

Just sometimes he is in a funny mood but who not. He runs a one man show and for this he doing well.

Does anybody know that there’s also a Frankfurt in East Germoney?

How do you now that he’s got nothing to do with East Germans? He never made a lot of food sounds funny in my eyes. Try a “Schnitzel” my wife’s cooking.

People who like Bratwurst should try the Nuernberger version, available at Tesco’s TGM place in Ubon. Not different to the German version.

Peesoup isn’t really a German dish, to be honest. Personally, I don’t like Bangkok, because it’s so polluted.

His almost cheese less Pizzas would make Italians cry. I don’t understand why he’s got to make his food outside of the kitchen. I googled and googled but couldn’t find images,

Are the kids still locked in the bathroom? I’m very sorry to hear that. Hope they’ll be rescued soon.

Guess you meant being drunk with funny mood? Hope he’s getting well soon.

I’ve googled and actually found a photo. Hope it's not from his outdoor kitchen. Auf Wienerschnitzel..............

If you don't know the diiferent between Nuernberger and Bratwurst, sorry how stupid you are. It wouldt be the besr for all western places that you not turn up. Before you complain and have so many ideas, why not try do doe it all by your self. Go around and ask people about him before you talk.
