  1. Most life insurance companies in Thailand won't issue a policy covering a person older than sixty years.

Look at this Insurance Company Website who ensured my MIL.

    http://www.thailife.com/en/policy/pa/

    Ooooooooooooopppppppsssss,

They accept subsriptions untill 75 years of age.

I should have chosen my words more carefully. I'll restate: Most insurance companies in Thailand won't issue a life insurance policy to people older than sixty years.

  2. Hi

One of the basic fundamental principles of insurance is that you should be no better or no worse off after the incident.

Providing you have first class insurance they should be working to this end. There is however the issue of "betterment" say if they replaced a tyre which was half worn they would be right to expect a "contribution" (another basic insurance principle) from yourself.

However if you have anything but the best insurance cover it would be naive to expect a satisfactory outcome in Thailand.

    TBWG :o

I know that this is how insurers like to spin things, but I would be hesitant to accept that the vehicle's value as a whole, or its expected lifespan, had been materially increased by the addition of some new parts. The parts may be new, but the car would still be worth the same or less than pre-accident.

  3. Most life insurance companies in Thailand won't issue a policy covering a person older than sixty years.

With all that Mekhong flowing while the application form was being filled out, I'd want to make sure that an "honest mistake" wasn't made and that the life policy doesn't cover your life instead of granny's. Has the Mrs. recently mentioned that skydiving would be the pefect hobby for you to take up?

  4. Hi,

I have a specific question about Insurances in Thailand to which I couldn't find an adequate response.

Suppose a family, a man, a wife and some children.

The man is subscribed to a Health Insurance package for his family.

The man has also a full-risk car Insurance which takes care of the driver and passengers in case of an accident.

The children have each a personal accident Insurance with the school.

The father has also an Insurance/savings plan for his children with the Bank.

Suppose now, while driving the kids to school, an accident happens and the whole family or some of the family members are being hospitalized (driver is not in fault).

Normaly, the family can launch a hospitalization claim with the Bank, the school, the car insurance company, AND the health insurance company.

This would mean that they will receive indemnization from 4 companies.

Thinking further along the line, suppopse that one or more family members are killed in the car accident.

That would mean that they will receive indemnization from 4 companies (and maybe also from the other driver insurance).

    Is this true?

Or is only 1 company required to pay the indemnization?

Are the insurance conpanies in Thailand linked together trough some database in which they can see how many insurances a particular person has subscribed to?

Depending upon the coverages provided by the various policies and the actual nature of the injuries sustained, it is possible that more than one of the policies you mention above would respond.

Regardless of the fact that more than one policy may respond, they collectively will not reimburse medical/hospital expenses for more than the amount actually incurred.

In the case of death or dismemberment, it is very possible that more than one personal accident and/or life insurance policy may provide indemnity.

If the party that caused the accident has third party liability insurance, then his or her insurance policy may be called to pay for items that would otherwise be paid by medical insurance. It may also be called to pay for items not normally covered by medical insurance such damages for loss of income and the like. Any of the insurers providing medical coverage would be very keen to see that this policy pays first.

You describe a situation that has numerous possible outcomes as far as insurance coverage is concerned.

  5. A number of years ago the Bangkok Post ran a feature about which themes and topics are allowed to be the subject of Thai soap operas and which ones are not. If I remember correctly, almost anything that would cause a person to think and perhaps examine and question social or political issues of any import were not allowed. So it is not only what does or does not get pixelated out of the entertainment that is the issue.

  6. But what you have mised out - and is important - is that the parts may be "new" but may only be a copy ! If you have a "Contract" garage and not "Dealer" garage i.e. a lower cost insurance, then this may well be the case.

Canopus 1969 is correct. If the OP is requesting dealer's garage or OEM parts and the insurance company's policy does not have the "dealer's garage endorsement", the insurance company is on solid ground to ask for the insured to pay the difference in cost. Standard auto policies leave the choice of how to repair or replace up to the insurer, who in turn will use contract garages and generic replacement parts.

  7. Someone at BUPA who took your call or was given your inquiry details probably sold your contact info to a friend or relative who was an agent for AIA. Happens all the time.

AIA can only provide medical insurance as a rider to a life policy. If you don't want/need life cover, no reason to talk to AIA. If you do want life insurance, there are cheaper alternatives. Life insurance contracts are usually very poor investment vehicles and contain far too many restrictions on access to your paid-in funds, in my opinion.

  8. One thing to watch carefully when insuring computers or other electronic items is the basis of loss settlement for these items. While most homeowners' policies cover your personal property for replacment cost, many insurers will either completely exclude laptops and some other electronic items, such as mobile phones, or will limit coverage to "actual cash value" or "indemnity" basis. This means that if your laptop is lost or stolen, they will pay your claim based upon either the market value or depreciated value, of your laptop. Perhaps even something lower. Since laptops depreciate and become obsolete very quickly, chances are that in most instances you would recover significanly less than what you paid for it, especially if it is a few years old. When you factor in the deductible most insurers impose, the amount recoverable from insurance goes down even more.

I'm not suggesting that you do without insurance for your laptop, just make sure you understand the basis of coverage and what you could expect to claim in the event of a loss.

    Good luck.

  9. If you have "first class" insurance you should insist that the insurance company repair/replace the damaged items with new ones.

If the insurer refuses to do so, you can file a complaint with the Department of Insurance. The DOI will usually force the insurer to honor the terms and conditions of the policy. Just mentioning filing a complaint with the DOI will usually bring the insurer to reason. The DOI is usually very pro-consumer on these issues.

    Good luck.

  10. My understanding (and I admit I may not be correct on this) is that the financial institutions in the US are afraid of being in violation of Thai laws. I think I read somewhere that the Thai securities regulators prohibit the sale of unregistered (in Thailand) investment vehicles to the Thai public, which they define as anyone physically present in Thailand. Anybody in the securities industry have more info on this?

Best bet is to open the account using a US address. Some finanical institutions might allow you to change it to a foreign address later. Some might not.

  11. I think that all the "duty free" shops in Thailand actually share their revenues on a percentage basis with the Customs Department. I know this used to be the case and haven't heard that it had changed. If this arrangement indeed remains , not only are most of the "duty free" goods not a bargain, it is questionalbe whether they are actually free of duty. I seem to recall that a Customs Department official, when asked how something could be "duty free" when a percentage of the price went to the Customs Department, said that revenue sharing whas not "duty".

  12. If you are currently enjoying a no-claims bonus from the insurer, your premium will go up to standard tariff rates at renewal. Technically you would stand to lose the no-claim bonus for a few years, not just the first year after your claim. You can call you insurance company, agent or broker to find out just how much your premium would go up if you lost your no-claim bonus and how many years you would have to be accident-free before it would be applied again. Then you can decide if you should pay this one out of your own pocket.

There is actually very little price competition between motor insurers. They all are required to use the Department of Insurance's published motor insurance tariff rates.

  13. If you only want medical insurance, cross off all life insurance companies from your list of prospective insurers. The only way they can give you medical cover is by adding it as a rider to a life policy. This means you have to buy some life insurance to get the medical. This makes it more expensive than just medical cover by itself.

There are a number of non-life insurance companies that offer medical cover only. BUPA Thailand offers a number of plans at differing cost and coverage levels. There are others, too. Shop around.

  14. Could still do with a recommendation of a specialist, or at least some opinions on a good hospital ............

    .

I have been satisfied seeing Dr. Vichien Trichorb at Bumrungrad. He is there most days from about 9 am until 1 pm at the ENT section.

  15. Had similar, though not so severe, symptoms some time back. After the antibiotics, cortisone, steroids, etc. to get the immediate problem taken care of, the doctor then switched to treatment for the underlying allergies which triggered the inflamation and resultant infection. This seems to keep it from recurring. Have you gone this route already, or is the source of your problem something else? Had a colleague a number of years back who needed surgery to remove a polyp from his sphenoid (sp?) sinus which caused similar problems. He, however, went to Europe for the surgery.

  16. The condominium juristic entity will likely have an insurance policy covering the building and the common facilities. You can usually get a copy of the policy by asking for one from the secretary (or other officer) of the juristic entity. It is not unusual for the juristic entity to have inadequate insurance coverage on the building. This is usually due to lack of understanding on their part rather than by intent. Sums insured need to be regularly updated to reflect increases in replacement cost, which may not always be done by the jursitic entity because doing so inevitably results in increases, albeit modest, to the annual premium.

The other issue is the fact that the replacement cost of the building and common facilities may be substantially lower than the market price of the units. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way in Thailand of insuring for the difference between what you paid for your unit and the amount of insurance proceeds you may receive in the event that the building is destroyed and the juristic entity apportions the claims proceeds of insurance to each unit's owner instead of rebuilding.

  17. I had a similar problem installing Mepis 6.0 on my notebook. Mepis is based upon Ubuntu, so perhaps the solution that worked for me will also work for you.

I had also tried the low res boot option from the menu and it did not work for me.

At the boot menu, press F3. If this feature is the same in Mepis and Ubuntu, you should get a menu of screen resolutions. Choose a resolution you are fairly sure will be supported by your notebook and proceed.

    Good luck.
