  1. I don't know what it's like there now, but when I was stationed there back in 1973 in the USAF at Udonthani, we spent our 5-day R&R in BKK...It was a single man's dream, which I was then, hehe....

Pooying about 10 to 1 GI....My 21st birthday was there as well so that made it all the better...After my 12 month tour of duty there I almost cancelled my flight back to the world, and discharged from the service in The Land of Smiles.....

The wife and I went back to BKK & Udorn, & Nong Khai in 96..I see that Patpong hasn't changed any. Reminds me of Bourbon St here in New Orleans..Party town!

    Sawadee Khrap!

  2. My teelock told me the story of the butterfly, when I was stationed there so many years ago. She likened it to a person who goes from one woman to another, just as a butterfly goes from flower to flower...

One thing that was heard up around the airbase at Udorn was pooyings saying, "you butterfly me, I do you numba 10"... Didn't take a Einstein to figure that one out. Or another commonly heard phrase, "you die Thailand"....Believe me it did happen, and for nit-noy baht. Thai baht was 20 to a Dollar back then, and 100 baht was all it took to have a hit put on someone...It was already bad enough we had to put up with the Pathet Lao communist around Laos coming in to the base area.

Apples were also very valuable then since there were not any around, a woman would give anything for an apple. Don't think it's the same now though since the western world has been having it's influence there now...They now have a KFC , Dunkin Donuts, and a 3-story mall up at Udornthani now...They have come a long way!

  3. Yeah right...How drunk was I..I was so drunk that I couldn't get up off of it, hehe....Then guess what else happened....Four shots in the keester! This was back in 73...Been drunk so much since I don't remember...

Don't do that drunk thing much anymore! Not at 52....

I thought Singha was IT! I'll have to ask my friends at the BKK Lonestar Cafe...

Do they still make Leaping Deer whiskey?

  4. Ahhh Grasshopper!  You have a lot to learn about Thai Pooying!

They are all jealous - but it's cool! :D

Hey Boon Mee, have you told these newbies what "Butterfly" means? Pooyings get Mahk-mahk Mo-Ho when that heppens,....

I don't know if they still use that term there, but we did back in the early 70's when the GI's were there! I never did that but I did have two or three teelocs during my year there..One at a time..Me no butterfly...hehe :o

  5. Yeah I wish! Saving the Baht now...

My wife is from Cebu City, PI and we will be going back in 2006 for her Mom's 80th Birthday, then I'll jump over to Thailand for a week or so to visit NKP and the VFW Post there at Udonthani...And throw down some Singha's..!

  6. Thanks for this topic...Just want to ring in and say hello to all, and that we are praying for the victims, and families of the Tsunami...I have many friends still living in Thailand since the VN War ended...Some in BKK and some upcountry.

I served at Udorn RTAFB 1973-74 USAF

This is a great site you have here, and a good communication tool...

We've been watching this news on FOX since day one...You will prevail and rebound..The Thai's are a strong people, and will overcome this disaster..

    God Bless You All,

  7. Just a fun poll on how drunk you were last night. I would say i was merry but if i'd stayed out longer then i would have been worse. the gf was pretty drunk. More so than me. So what about the rest of you? And what time did you crawl home. I dont remember.

HAHA....I can relate! I was stationed up at Udorn RTAFB back in 1973 during the Vietnam War with the USAF (BTW I'm also a Scot) I did my 12 month tour there killing many a Singha and Mekong Whiskey and chasing the pooyings, hehe...A great time if not the best in my life!!

Been back once in 1996, going back in 2006...!

    Best Regards Mate,

  8. I spent my R&R there in Pattaya Beach back in 1973 when I was stationed at Udorn RTAFB up north with the USAF...We had no bad times there. I have many slides and photos I took from that period..The water then was crystal clear out by the coral reefs, and the night clubs were numba nueng (1) We went back in 1996 to BKK, Udorn, and Nong Khai. It was sad to see all the air pollution in BKK..Very nice up towards Loas though...We loved it...Going back in 2006!

All prayers and donations going ouit to the Tsunami victims...God Bless You...

    Sawadee, great forum!

  9. Your right...This forum is making it around the world easily..! A friend of mine in BKK sent this out to our group of US Veterans who served in Thailand during the Vietnam War.

Rest assured that America is still sending out donations..Our church has been, and will be collecting more this week to go out to the needy there in Phuket and other areas...This is an all out effort all over this country.

Great forum you have here, and keep up the spirit and good work! The Thai spirit is strong and will prevail!

    God Bless you all....
