Reason for my post is simple before january 2014 any British national living in Asia could apply for a new passport in most asean countries and their passport would be dealt with at the HongKong office that stopped in January 2014 now all renewal or new passports applications are now dealt with at the passport office in the uk only and here sadly is the rub ? the passport you are using must be sent with the application not a copy the original which puts most people in problems if local countries such as Thailand deems it unlawful to be without your passport at any time lots of online comments and reports of serous delays now over 30,000 back log in uk offices very sad situation and looks like its going to get a lot more serious as the weeks go by before from Thailand you were able to send a certified copy with all the completed forms with payments also made and from the HongKong office your new passport was returned in about 14 days that service due to cut backs by the uk government stopped in January of this year now all are dealt with in the uk passport offices causing havoc on a grand scale.

hi in reply to your comment re international driving permit if its to be used but not in the Asean group of countries then yes follow advise from other posts

but if its for only Asean countries then a Thai smart driving permit will be all you need cost 600 bahts valid for 5 years but covers driving in all countries in the group but also remember if its using your own private car then you will need to get a cover note of insurance for your car so be sure to carry the cars documents for entering laos,malaysia,singapore,myanmar , etc hong kong is also on the list as is main land china as now with right visa's you can drive to china all the way to kunming border crossing and into china from thailand even drive up from singapore to kunming what a trip that would be .

Sorry dont worry about the air ticket being needed their concern is the passport and that you comply with all requirements in all my years my air tickets were neither asked for or commented about you mentioned a tourist visa a double entry would be the logical request give an edge when you get to Thailand

I am please to hear of the new bus route from Bangkok to Laos Capital vientiane and the time taken 11 hours wonderful and yes a pre Laos visa a must but dont worry the Embassy in bangkok opens at 8 am and you can pay a little more for a one hour service the same day

now my main reason for this reply the text quotes another route to pakse in the south well in march of this year 2012 I did that trip using an over night from the capital "vientiane " leaving at 8.30 pm took all night and arriving at the bus station outside the city at just after 7.30 am ? the new service from bangkok quotes its a 13 Hour journey to pakse from Bangkok sorry not possible the service used was a sleeper bus with beds backets pillow etc and cost 1,700 kips Pakse is on National Road 13, the main transportation highway of Laos. and be aware There is a high risk of Malaria and dengue fever during the monsoon season in that area .But one good thing the roads are great one on the new highway and next comment "laos " is the most connected country I have traveled in in some years the whole country has wifi ,broadband available a laptop works on the bus even wonderful skyping enroute south was so clear unreal. hope this brief reply helps even one doing this new route from bangkok but in more like 22 or 23 hours total .
