He is spot on for either PIA or the British school. Had a great six years teaching at one of them in Phuket. Not sure why you have to live in phuket town. There are a number of nice communities to consider without having a nasty commute. Should you decide to take the plunge scubajunky, you will have a good time and surely save some money while you're at it.
Extremely high salary for any kind of teaching. I don't trust this.It is Teaching in an International School. It is not a typo it is 130k bhat and 21k baht housing.
Is Phuket a nice place to live ? and is it pretty safe with a good expat community ? is it like living in a tourist bubble or is that aspect pretty easy to avoid and escape ?

ISB and NIST both pay over 200 000/month gross salary inclusive of housing allowance. They also provide a yearly bonus amounting to 10-12% of gross income. Pattana also offers a good pay package, however, not so high as these two.
When I was working at one of the int'l schools in phuket I was taking home 130 000 Baht/month net.

I see a number of people chiming in about their impressions of the tier of various international schools. Important to note that a school's international reputation (hence tier) lies in large part upon the accreditation that it has received. The most widely known and respected of the lot include CIS (Council of International Schools), NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges). All schools will advertise their accreditation on the homepage of their website. In addition to this, top tier schools offer the most attractive packages for their staffs. By international school standards Thailand has only three tier one schools and they are all in Bangkok. One might try to argue Prem in Chiangmai (or perhaps a couple other nationwide), however, it has yet to reach the point where it can retain experienced IB educators for more than a few years (package is sorely lacking).

Thought I had better add that you need not work in an Arab country to make some good cash. Granted, there are sacrifices to be made. The quality of life here cannot compare to that of Thailand/Vietnam/Malaysia; however I must admit that for me, the ends more than justify the means.

Interesting post. For those who are qualified and experienced teachers in the international system, there are a number of posts that offer a much higher savings potential than the majority of Thai intl. schools. Working in Thailand I was able to save 18K US per year over the 6 yeqrs I worked there. I left a couple years ago for a post in Africa and have averaged a savings of 6K US per month (cash in bank after all expenses). Another few years and I will be heading back to SE asia to finish out my career with the pension sorted. Well worth a look folks!

Happy to share my personal $5000 f-up. 8 years ago and new to phuket invested in a patong bar with an english fellow who seemed to say all the right things. No excuses, I was young and studpid (and at the time usually under the influence). Long story short I never saw a return, nor ever documented any 'business transactions'. Walked away and resisted the temptation to take any action. I must admit I was happy to see the bloke fall on hard times when his next dodgy project failed spectacularly...VIP bar at the head of Bangla

Chances of getting a police clearance next week
in Bangkok
Posted
Hi all. Flying into BKK next week and hope to try to get the police clearance done at the headquarters. Wondering if the protests have shut this service down. Any insights from people in the area would be most appreciated.
