  1. I like to share my direct experience that I was living with my partner (who RIP) in Thailand for 12 years (we did not marriage). He is senior American expat and I had been accompanied him to get a Guarantee letter for income from US embassy once a year for 12 years (2003-2015). At first time when we went to US embassy we were asking the embassy to CERTIFIED his Social Security Statement (Original Annual Statement Report). The embassy informed that they are not allow to certified it. But we said Thai immigration has expects the embassy to verify all sources of income. Anyway we had learned that US embassy issue A Grantee Letter to verify all sources of income for expat American in Thailand to submit to Thai Immigration. We did this procedure for only 30 minutes at the embassy and pay fee (I forgot how much). He passed in 2015 and I buried him in Protestant Cemetery in Bangkok.

From the times picking my kids up from school (they're in their upper teens now) I have been called 'Daddy' by all their friends.  This is because they've heard my kids call me 'Daddy' and assumed that it was my name!  I still get called 'Daddy'.

Some must think I'm the most virile person around with all these 'daughters and sons'!

They call you Daddy to show you respect.

I recently read on another thread that older accounts could be closed automatically.  I was worried because i have a very old account with KTB that has circa 10K in it.  I visited a local branch the other day (not the branch that it was opened at) and the manager told me no worries.

Has anyone had an account closed automatically by a bank.  And what were the circumstances?

I got explanation from KTB about Dormant account. In general, a low-balance savings account (below 2,100 baht) which has shown no activity (deposits and/or withdrawals) over a long period, other than posting of the interest and/or service charges. Dormant account could be closed automatically.

No worry if you have money keep in your bank account at lease 2,100 baht they will not close your account. My mother have KTB account for more than 10 years for amount of 6,000 baht.

I was aware of the Thai custom with regard to 'Sinsod' so I said to the wife when we have our village wedding the Sinsod is for show and at the end of the day it comes back to me.  We are married at the Amphur which takes half an hour and some paperwork before hand.

But my wife doesn't want a village wedding.......yes really!   Her view is we can put 100k baht to better use than feed a lot of bludgers and ply the local alcoholics with whisky.

Of course the step-daughter has just got married and the bin for that was 120k baht for 150 guests.  I kicked in some coin thinking we would be seeing the back of her and the new husband but I was mistaken.....as I often am!   A conscript in the Thai army is on a rather low income and he has a year to go.  Then after that, a grand income of 300 baht a day will be his lot.  We haven't lost a daughter but gained another dependent!

So, marriage can be a serious business for a Thai girl.....and it can be serious for the farang por!

    I like your wife idea.

Did that include a fine or you just had to hand in statements for 2011-2016 which made it much more expensive?

(this company is also owned by 4 Thais)

Fortunately a fine was waived my accountant company just follow all paper works for 2011-2016 which almost empty business transactions activities. (this company have 3 Thai shareholders). I am a managing director who sign all paper works.

  7. (In some countries your company registration is revoked if you don't pay yearly fees and hand in yearly statements, while in other countries the IRS will wait some time and starts fining you big amounts of money for being too late with handing in the paperwork). This is exactly my case. I had a company registered in 2004 and do not handing in the paperwork from 2010. In 2016 I paid 30,000 B for accountant and 10,000 B. for lawyer to officially close a company. I am Thai for your info.

Yes I have seen this so many times. I would say the odds were not favourable. Another few would have been needed to feel a victorious outcome. The Foreigner has done everyone here no favours with this. We all know how frustrating driving is here but if there is one piece of advice I can give to anyone who lives here, is never lose your temper, especially in front of others. Go home and kick and punch the boxing bag around, as getting angry here never gets a positive outcome.

Very good advice. Especially in front of others.

  9. is it thailand your wife is hesitant about, or is it the living arrangement?

It's not really about Thailand for her. We're on the same page in that she likes living simply as well, would like to live abroad again, does like Thailand. The differences are that she loves our life in Canada. It took her a while; it wasn't this way until recently. Because of that we'll likely stay here a while yet. We have common views on how to live, how to spend, and the value of global living. She doesn't want to live in Thailand forever however (but could spend a few months/year happily)

it seems you live a pretty cushy life in canada in a nice home, then you want to come to thailand and sit on floor cushions and live in a shack

not surprising some woman would be reluctant

We make it cushy. If I'm giving the we're-loaded vibe, that's wrong. We have a modest income below the national average, living in the nation's most expensive city. We don't own a vehicle. We own a beautiful and valuable house, but little more. We spend next to nothing on material things that most people sink a lot of money into; clothing, hobbies, home decor. Where we are rich is that we are mostly self employed and get to spend a ton of time together, and with our daughter. I'm a music director; a teaching/performing musician. She's a private language teacher.

Now you answers my questions too. Because I think you live a pretty cushy life in Canada.

My concern is only your income when you live in Thailand. But if you are positive about that. I think your family can manage to live here in Thailand. Anyway keep your house in Canada for exist plan, rent it but do not sell it.For your kid school you may ask information from Jewish community in Thailand http://www.jewishthailand.com FYI: I am Thai woman 49 yo.

  10. Only one bank account with 800,000 Baht is needed, and it has to be in your name only.

Your Mother applies as your dependant and does not need to show income or savings.

I am Thai a caretaker for 81 retirement American old man since he was 71. All he needs is A THAI BANK ACCOUNT to meet 800K together with a LETTER FROM BANK stated same amount an same dated. He is always keep this amount in bank he did not spend this money even he can. He never get any problem for his visa extension for 10 years already.

  11. They are really two sides of the same coin.

For sure, doesn't mean one side has changed does it. ?

How do you drop a hot potato?

The answer, of course, is that you just do — because a hot potato hurts your hands, you quickly let it go.

That’s exactly the same way to lose a negative emotion. When you recognize that it hurts you more than anyone else, you will simply let it go.

With prayers for shalom, peace, (from Rabbi said). Not myself say that.

  12. Natural is arranged, everywhere in the world, I agree with you guys, read my story of true love for an old man.

In 1997 a 65 year old retried American man came to Thailand. Not to spend his retirement here in Thailand but he came here to be a Rep for Thai manufactures when Thailand was in real estate and banking crisis and gov did devalue Thai exchange rate from 26 B to 46 B against 1$. He is an agent for American imported companies or buyers from U.S. to do outsource their products in Thailand. He was enjoy his golden years in doing business with Thai manufactures from commission that he got from Thai factories for 4% of f.o.b. price. It was because of everything that made in Thailand was 50% cheaper from currency devalued in July 1997. He used to travel to Taiwan from time to time. He came to Thailand in 1996-1997 because Taiwan stops to be industry/low labor cost country. His wife is Taiwanese live in Cal and a son born in 1985. His wife did not come to Thailand with him because a son must be in U.S. school so they are living apart.

In 2003 he went under 5 of L-spine surgery in 2003 at Bangkok hospital it was 30,000 $ paid from his own money. He could not get cover from Medicare because they did not cover outside U.S. After surgery his pain got very good result of healing. But his spine damage was permanently and it made him to be a disable he lives his life on a wheelchair and has to wear adult diaper. He knew that his condition will turn out like this but his pain was killing him he had no choice but surgery. My friend who is a nurse asked me to be his caretaker because I speak English and I was unemployed from a trading company that close down business in Thailand and move to China in 2003. When I was with him in the beginning I also met his wife and his son when they came to Thailand to see him. His Chinese wife wanted him to back to U.S. for Medicare and for a son education. But he wants to be in Thailand because his agent business is here and it is ok for him to pay all healthcare and hospital bills. His commission was enough to pay for every bill. So this family got solution by asking me to be his Thai wife and still keep marry paper for his Chinese wife for legal matter. She was in US. since she was 27 and never work in US at all. She will not entitle to any US SS benefit, this is only one reason. A deal is not divorce Chinese wife for her benefit in US when an old husband passes away. And for myself and my path is help him develop agent business in Thailand with American buyers to come to Thai manufactures. He gave her 10,000 USD per month plus his SS check send to his wife because he needs to maintain hid U.S. address. All income for almost 10 years that support his Chinese wife in US and paid for his son a good living all source of income both Thai and US family come from a company that I run a business for him. He completely cannot walk I feed him and wash him caring him and in the mean time - do business correspondents by email to customers in US and he called by phone only. In 2004 customers did not know me but from a year customers visit manufactures in Thailand and get to know me because I did take care of them when they came to see production line in Thailand.

In 2004 we became a couple and his Chinese wife in Cal knew it but she is ok because she said he needs a caretaker. In 2004 he set up a company just for purpose of buying a house for 100,000USD. or 4 million THB then. My status had transferred from Thai wife to be a business partner. Because of my experience job from trading company, I run a business for him almost 10 years and I send money to US from 2004 to Chinese wife and son until he graduate in 2008.

Unfortunately it was not good time to get job it was sub-prime and CDO crisis then. In 2009 after Lehman Brother collapsed 90% of our customers filed Chapter 11. Thai manufactures that sent shipments to various US customers lost millions of dollars. We got hit too. We lost all our money we and must be part of our buyer to pay debts to factories because most of factories run business by bank loan when business good they honestly pay us our commission. So we cannot just turn our back on them. Factories close down and have to provide some money to workers.

In Jan 2010 we have nothing left. Only a house to live in but big issue is his hospital and med bills that about 1,000 dollars per month at Bangkok hospital. A sickly 81 old man is the one who suffer from his son order or instructed a nursing home in Bangkok do not let me come to visit him at nursing home. I am not his legal wife I cannot visit him now. It is painful and heartbreak. It is does not matter for me to sell a house and give money to his son. But in return I need LEGAL paper between me and the old man. I am working now I make my own income as a working in imported company.
