There is all reasons to be frustrated as a forreigner.

There is actually no serious way, at this moment, to make a vax appointment as a forreigner without workpermit or thai ID.

We do not exist, but our money they love.

It may vary from Province to Province.  I am registered with the local hospital but have a Thai ID. However, an English friend of mine was also able to register with just his passport and Thai drivers license.  Another friend in the neighboring village registered about 2 weeks before me and has already had his first shot but it seems the hospital has now run out.  Can see no evidence that Thais are being given preferential treatment in our area.

  2. Hi all, I'm just about to introduce CSF vaccine to my farm for the first time and have some questions.

1). Is there a risk that by progressively rolling out the vaccine that I could infect other non vaccinated pigs?

2). When is it safe to vaccinate the sows? Does it matter if they ate pregnant?

The reason I am asking here is because I am having difficulty find concise and consistent answers on Google. I have bought live attenuated cell culture vaccine.

    No instructions came with it.

    Cheers

for the past few years he works at 5 bags from 5kg to 100kg

that is extraordinary.   wish I could duplicate this. only 150kg of food to gain 95kg.  very profitable indeed. I'm about 210kg and thought that was ok.  love to know how many bags/grade he is giving them.

I friend of mine who has been doing this for about 9 years has changed his feed program and only giving #2 feed and #4. Says he has seen no difference in growth rates but saving considerable money.  I am still pretty much following the feed company guide lines but still making onsite decisions based and growth and body score.

Just to clarify. It is 3 vaccine in one shot. PRRS, Circo, Mycoplasma. You will need FMD as well as CSF. All together use to cost about 200/piglet. With 3 in 1 shot, you will get down to 150-160.

I guess this is true.  The cost of disease going through the herd can be horrendous.  Even the pigs not terribly affected will have stunted growth.  I have recently been through this.  That reminds me, I have to get back on to the FMD.  Last year when we were selling pigs at cost and below cost I started to cut back on everything.

Unfortunately, there are several small and 2 large farms not far from us and worse still many are friends with FIL and frequently visit the farm. Whilst they are aware they are not to go wandering through the sheds as they used to do they are still o the property.  My biosecurity has a long way to go.

IA, I totally agree about using probiotics. I used to be very consistent with it but let it fall away over the last 12 months.  But back to using it again in drinking water and for cleaning down rooms prior to introducing a new batch.  This is not a quick fix but a useful longer term action to improve general health.  Interesting article in pigs333 today.  https://www.pig333.com/articles/time-to-rethink-the-use-of-probiotics-in-post-weaning-piglets_13966/

Pig farming is a low margin high cost game now

It surely is.  when I first got into this we were getting 68-75 baht.  Last year was a killer. I let one batch go at 36 baht just to get some cash to pay for feed...

  5. My experience from food sells men is that they do side businesses. They use company channels to sell your pigs as promised but at a lower price than it should be so they can make there cut.

Our feed dealer here in phimai (80km north of Korat) buy back at 59 bath/kg. Time for you to find yourself a new feed dealer.
We are half way between Udon Thani and Nong Khai so have buyers from both cities. Sold 15 pigs about 2 weeks ago to NK buyer at 58 baht. The Udon guy is usually about 2 baht lower I use him when I have less than 10 pigs to move and want/need to move undersized pigs.

Not sure what price is ATM.

thank you JSixpack.  Great detailed reply.  Have implemented NCR into chrome and followed your other instructions.  So far so good.

  7. Thanks very much all.  I have been considering a VPN for a while so maybe time to get of my arse and just do it.

After writing this post I tried using Chrome and found less issues with that than IE.... lol. yes I am a habitual IE user but time for a change.  Funny thing is when I did login to paypal this morning to follow noahvail's advice (post #6) it opened in English even though I was using IE.   Anyway there is a lot of good advice here so I will be following most of it today and see if I can resolve it once and for all.

    Cheers all.

  8. Thanks again kickstart. I like the look of that calf. Can certainly see the Angus influence. Good muscle development at only 5 months. I found out yesterday there is someone not far from me (near Nong Khai) that is breeding Aussie Brahmans. No idea what kind of money he is wanting but make a visit to him shortly.

Yes, I had found the Yenwar site from a previous post you had made on another thread. They and Pornchaiinter look interesting. I am familiar with the later due to some dealing with them with our pig farm.

have just planted 3 rai of Napier, 1 rai of Lucerne and 2 rai of something else that I am not sure about. Papa got the seed for free and then planted them for me before I could find out exactly what they are. He assures me that it is good for cattle but I will wait and see what I get. Fun to have 2 rai mystery grass.... rolleyes.gif

We finished building the cow shed a couple of days ago so now waiting for fodder to grow and then buy a couple of heifers to kick things off.

    cheers

  9. Thanks kickstart, I was hoping to hear from you. Yes, I think the Droughtmaster would do well here. What I am planning to do is cross Senepol with Lowline blood to produce a smaller sized animal with good performance characteristics and that can thrive in this environment up here in the north east. I know the Thais love big cattle and thus the penchant for Braham, Brazil lines but I firmly believe that small properties should be looking at smaller breeds with better carcass yields.

I am only wanting to start small and see if I can make a go of it so importing live animals and all the risks associated with that causes me to pause. I think I can still achieve a similar result with local Droughtmaster cows and imported lowline semen. I could use local semen but I do not believe there are any red lowine genetics here.... only black.

I will now start the search for Droughtmaster heifers/cows here... rolleyes.gif

    Cheers.

I could not agree with you more ,the Thai love of big cattle is beyond me ,it would be ok if they were on a proper diet ,then they would do ok , but only grazing hedge bottoms ,and supplemented with rice straw ,is no way to rear cattle .I know the financial incentives are not they for the average Thai cattle farmer to rear good quality cattle ,some do ,and do it well for the average cattle farm it is not easy ,main problem is cash flow ,not a lot of cash for long term investment .

I can see where you are going ,and I wish you luck ,but have you thought of Angus crosses ,or more so Brangus ,they are not a big breed ,and cattle and semen is available in Thailand ,I have 2 of my beef cows in calf this year to Brangus bulls ,one cow is a Thai native ,small hardy thing ,I would say a Brangus calf should do well.

I have seen a CP poster selling red Angus semen ,and I have seen a photograph of a red Brangus heifer ,for sale 35 000 Baht .

Yes, the Brangus is certainly a good option. And if I can find the red genetics then I could be on a winner,

I have sometimes considered using small native heifers but really don't know anything about them. Calving, fertility, milk production, growth rates, FCR etc, I assume that they are very hardy. but that is all I know.

  11. With this vaccine programs for piglets, it is important that sow is vaccinated in the right time so that antibodies is transfer to the piglets when they are drinking the milk.

Great info Jompa. What software are you using? I am a bit tired of my clunky spreadsheets that I designed myself and am looking for something more friendly and useful.

By the way all, My apologies for being so quiet on the forum this year. Have spent 80% of my time back in Oz working but now back to my home in Thailand and looking to expand our farrow to finish operation in the early part of the year. Going to be very busy researching room design and operating efficiencies before I lay the slab. Have recently completed earthworks giving us a new dam, settlement pond a long way from the sheds and a raised building platform for the new finishing rooms. Once complete I have to redesign the current barn which was set up to house the whole farrow to finish operation which is not ideal.

I am still struggling with the decision of using traditional gestation stalls and farrowing rooms or trying to accommodate sows in open stalls. Even looking at group housing. Budget and space constraints will probably dictate the final result. However the information being shared here is invaluable so I thank all members for their unselfish contributions of experience and photos.

    Anyway.

Sawadee Pee Mai to all. May 2016 bring us health happiness and harmony.

P.S. I would love to organize a social get together in the new year for members here. Especially those located near Udon Thani. I'm thinking about meting in Udon rather than tramping all over each others farms or perhaps even at our house which is located 3 km from the farm. Let me know what your thoughts are.

  12. fmd, that is due in the coming months according to my paper work, just had sfv in last few weeks......... just because im noseyyyyyyy how much does a dose per pig cost? i dont have a clue on running costs..........

Sorry for taking a while to get back to you TF. Was flat out the last few days supervising excavation of new dam and building pad for new barn next year. Then on the plane back to Australia. I am not sure of the price per pig. I just got the closest thing to a vet near me to go and purchase the vaccine and a few other medications in Udon and inoculate the herd while I was away. All up she charged me 2500 baht and that included her time. We had sold a lot of our herd down in the last month so only had to do about 40 pigs to do. Mainly piglets and sows. So not an expensive exercise given it included her time and we restocked on Amoxy and Pendrest as well.

Good luck mate. I will be back permanently late December so hope to be able to pop over to Ban Dung and catch up with you... maybe bring some Christmas cheer with me.... 555

  13. robert let us know what you think of the system when you sell out those pigs from cp, that 1 off type deal sounds good. whats the average weight - age of the piglet when you get it and what would the finishing time frame be? are they giving you the meds ?

the pgilets were between 9-12 kg. We paid 1500 baht, the published price for piglets from CP. I've negotiated the price for CP food from them and I will be able to sell the pigs back to them at the published CP price at the time when we sell them. But you are flexible, we can also sell them someone else should you get a better price somewhere, which is unlikely to be honest. They will be happy to buy our pigs also in future, you don't necessarily need to buy piglets from them. Their main deal is you buy their food, they will buy back the pigs at the CP price. Vaccine and everything else you have to pay. This is very different from the contract farming, different people you deal with from CP. And they are not so strict about how you manage your farm. I should be able to provide a bit more feedback about this model in the future. I'm just really trying different things out until I have the right business model for our farm.

Robert, this really does sound like the best of both worlds. Looking forward to your future experiences with this. Do you have any suggestions as to how to best approach CP/Betago/Perfecq regards this.

    cheers

    Peter
