Just heard from a friend all foriegners are required to carry passports. Can anyone confirm this? I appreciate this is the standard law and has been for a while, but apparently they are now enforcing it?

You were required to carry your passport with you even before the coup. Or at least a photo copy of your ID page, and the Visa stamps etc.

And what about the American married couple who tried to sue their travel agency because the midnight sun in Norway was the same sun as the had in America. :-)
