    Windows 10, the eagerly anticipated new version of Microsoft’s operating system will be available from July 29, the company announced on Monday.

    Users from 190 countries who are already running Windows 7 and 8.1 can upgrade to the newest version free of charge.

    Internet company Ookla has just published its results for the rankings of Asian countries in terms of Internet speeds, and the results are quite revealing. Thailand actually ranks 6th in the region with an average of 18.9 Mbps, far ahead of Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia, but outclassed by countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Taiwan.

    Internet company Ookla has just published its results for the rankings of Asian countries in terms of Internet speeds, and the results are quite revealing.

    Thailand actually ranks 6th in the region with an average of 18.9 Mbps, far ahead of Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia, but outclassed by countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Taiwan.

    According to the new global survey by Ookla, the average broadband speed in Malaysia is slower than Vietnam and Cambodia in the region, and barely ahead of Myanmar. Thailand ranks fairly well, with Vietnam not that far behind.

    At the number one spot was Hong Kong with a speed of 78.3 Mbps. Singapore sped to second placing at 66.6 Mbps while South Korea was ranked fourth (53.77 Mbps), the United Kingdom 23rd (26.85 Mbps) and the United States, 32nd (23.9 Mbps).

  6. “500 Startups” launches $10M “500 TukTuks” fund for Thai startups

    500 Startups has officially announced the launch of a $10 million fund in Thailand, with the aim of nurturing early-stage startups in Thailand’s growing tech industry.

    he micro-fund is called 500 TukTuks in reference to the 3-wheeled motorised rickshaws found in the country, and will be managed by two well known investors in the Thai technology scene – the founder of Ookbee, Natavudh Pungcharoenpong, and founder of Disrupt University, Krating Poonpol, who recently joined 500 Startups as Venture Partner.

  7. Tidal brings high quality music streaming to users in Thailand

    Tidal is a new high fidelity music streaming platform backed by superstar rapper turned businessman Jay Z, along with fifteen of his superstar mates, who also happen to be some of the biggest names in music.

    The service, which will compete against likes of Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, YouTube, Deezer and others, promises “the first music streaming service that combines the best High Fidelity sound quality, High Definition music videos and expertly Curated Editorial.”

    It’s main selling point is that it offers enhanced “lossless” sound quality, exclusive tracks and content from artists, however, this comes at price.

    Tidal launches in Thailand on April 30th, 3pm Bangkok time.

One such service, Hooq, is an Internet-based video streaming and download service run by Singaporean mobile operator Singtel, in conjunction with Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. The new service offers unlimited streaming and downloading for a subscription, and aims to launch in Thailand next month.

    Thai viewers will be able to sign up and watch local films and TV programmes thanks to deals with various Thai-based studios – such as GTH, Five Star, TIGA and more. The service claims it will offer more than 10,000 films and TV programmes from the US too, mainly from companies such as Disney, Sony, Warner Bros and Dreamworks.

  10. Google Thailand wants to get more Thai businesses online

    Pete Nuchanatanon, Google Thailand’s newly appointed head of marketing, says he wants more small and medium sized enterprises to benefit from being online and using Google’s services.

    Google Thailand currently offers 45 different products and services including Google Search, YouTube, Google Maps, Translate, AdWords, Adsense and Trends.

  11. Russian hackers read President Obama’s emails last year

    Some of President Obama’s emails were exposed to Russian hackers as part of a White House computer breach last year. The hackers managed to poke around into the unclassified system, but no classified networks were compromised, according to the The New York Times this week. Apparently, the servers that control access to Obama’s BlackBerry smartphone remained secure.

    It seems like just a matter of time, but now it’s been officially confirmed – Google’s Nexus 7 tablet is now discontinued. The affordable and feature-rich 7-inch tablet has disappeared from the Google Store, where a red label states that the device is no longer available for purchase.

    Google Asus-made Nexus 7 was getting rather long in the tooth – as it first launched back in July 2003, but it remained quite a compelling tablet option because Google kept it up to date with the very latest versions of Android.

  13. The end is nigh for Internet trolls

    Internet trolls, listen up. Your days are numbered.

    Researchers from Cornell and Stanford Universities have created an algorithm that can identify Internet trolls by simply looking at the way they write.

    The algorithm is so advanced, it can predict whether or not a person needs banning from studying between five to ten of their previous forum posts or social media comments.

    The study entitled Antisocial Behavior in Online Discussion Communities, was part funded by Google and looks at the behaviour of Internet trolls to try and determine what it was that resulted in the being banned from an online community.

  14. Man ruptures thumb tendon playing Candy Crush Saga

    A 29 year old California man ruptured a tendon in his thumb from playing the popular game Candy Crush Saga.

    The incident, which is believed to be the first of its kind related to excessive smartphone gaming, was the result of the man playing the game using only his left hand for a period of eight weeks.

    Mobile phone users who fail to register their prepaid SIM, face not being able to make phone calls or use mobile data services from August 1st onwards.

    The requirement for all pre-paid SIM cards in Thailand to be registered was announced by the NBTC earlier this year.

    There are currently around 80 million active prepaid mobile SIM cards in use in Thailand. However only around 18 million users have registered their SIM cards so far.

  18. Reports: Google facing antitrust showdown in Europe

    SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — European regulators are poised to file a complaint alleging Google has been abusing its dominance in Internet search to thwart competition and innovation, according to memo that the company sent to its employees Tuesday.

    Kent Walker, Google’s general counsel, wrote that a “statement of objections” to Google’s business practices will be released Wednesday by Europe’s top antitrust regulator, Margrethe Vestager.

    Cyber security is a growing problem. Verizon and Symantec both conducted a study that demonstrates most hacking attacks can be easily avoided.

    The findings show that employees often click on links or fail to properly patch computers, leaving the company open to infiltration by a hacker.
