If arriving with a tourist visa, there is no requirement to have a flight out of Thailand. Do make sure, however, that you have over 20,000 baht equivalent in cash or travelers checks in a major currency.

I am not sure what they will ask for at the Thai Embassy in Brussels. Check if they require an onward flight out of Thailand within some specified period to issue you with an SETV. If they do, it does not need to be a return flight back to Belgium. A cheap flight to a neighboring country will be accepted. You can usually find these for about 25 EUR.

thank you very much for the answer.

There is a general problem that about 75% of the information you can find online about Thai immigration rules is at least partially outdated or outright wrong. There is no way of easily identifying the minority of resources that are actually correct, especially as those you would expect to be definitive are often the least accurate.

How is someone to know they should ignore the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website and look for answers from @ubonjoe on a random message board?

excuse me, but  the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website doesn't help me   :

    6. EXTENSION OF STAY

Those who wish to stay longer or may wish to change their type of visa must file an application for permission at the Office of Immigration Bureau located on Government Center B, Chaengwattana Soi 7, Laksi, Bangkok 10210, Tel 0-2141-9889 (or at http://www.immigration.go.th ). The extension of stay as well as the change of certain type of visa is solely at the discretion of the Immigration officer..
  3. i plan to come to thailand 1st september with a setv , during my stay i'll marry my thai gf and get a permit of 1year stay based on marriage... shall i also be denied on arrival if my return fly is booked  for 6/7 months after my first entry (lets say 5 april) ???

with all i read here , i scare i 'll be denied ....:sad::sad: and i guess the thai embassy in brussels 'll never give me the visa (should be better after all)...

what about with a return flight "open"  ???? (+/- 200 euros more expensive )  i phone the embassy tomorrow but what will happen again at the immigration desk on my arrival in bangkok ???

by the way somebody here has an idee for me ? i cannot get the metv (financial restrictions:sad:)

For any permission to stay, the reentry permit is valid up to the expiry of the permission to stay. If you return to Thailand before the expiry of the permission to stay, you can enter Thailand using the reentry permit. Thus, your maximum time outside Thailand before returning with your extension of stay intact depends on the remaining duration of that extension. For example, if you have an extension of stay (with associated reentry permit) that expires 20 February 2018, you can leave Thailand and return at any time up until 20 February 2018 and your extension of stay will still be valid. If you return after 20 February 2018, you will need a new visa or visa exempt entry.

very clear , thank you for the answer... glad to read that

As long as you don't have a valid re-entry permit your extension of stay will end as soon as you exit, and you can apply for the visa whenever you want.

in this case (extention of stay based on marriage) i wil get a reentry permit, ok. but howlong can i stay outside thailand before reentry ?

want to go back to belgium for a (?) time (for whatever reason) : 3, 4, 5 or 6 months is it possible ?

  6. one small one (5/6.000 thb) with small freezer comp. would suffice for me , my wife and 2 children as we buy fresh food everyday , and go to market 2 times a week...  the food my wife has cooked is eaten the same day... and we buy ice cubes everyday

yes maybe necessary  only when  we buy few kilos pork from the neighbors , or chicken wings/breasts from tesco .

There's a lot of posts on thaivisa about this across multiple threads which aren't very well-informed.  For example people mentioning rip currents.  Rip currents aren't really dangerous to any freediver who can dive 20m.  You will know about ripcurrents (and learn how to deal with them safely) long before you start freediving that seriously.  It's a bit like calling the cold a danger to polar bears.

Her diving stuff was missing from her room.  Unless somebody removed it, (would require a number of parties being complicit which even for Koh Tao would be a bit of a stretch) that implies she was diving or on the way to dive when whatever happened, happened.

Underwater blackouts are a real danger to freedivers and there is very little publicity about them.  They can happen to anybody hyperventilating (breathing deeply in and out) before diving.  Even in shallow water, for example swimming lengths underwater in a swimming pool.

Your brain is tricked into thinking you have enough oxygen in your lungs to stay underwater, but they don't, and you black out, and when you black out underwater death is almost certain, unless you have somebody close by that notices and they can resuscitate you (difficult to do if you're in deep water).

This girl was a freediver, and she probably hyperventilated before diving, as this is what freediving schools teach you to do to extend your breath hold.

I'm not an expert on Koh Tao currents but I think it is unlikely that the body drifted away from Koh Tao.  It'd be more likely to settle on the bottom where (by the time they started looking for it), it would have been scavenged by fish, sharks, crabs and other marine life.  So, the only curiosity is that no bones or flesh remnants were found.

excuse me , but i understand nothing what you are trying to explain us connecting to the case...
