  1. Hi everyone,

Sure this question has been answered before, so apologies if it has. Did have a look but couldn’t find anything specific to this.

I have a work permit and had the normal visa/extension/90 day report that goes with it. My work will be finishing the end of March, so my work permit will be cancelled and I will need to leave anyway. Had to leave Thailand for a few days, yesterday, and will be returning soon. Whilst leaving I realised that there would be less than 30 days remaining of my work when I return anyway, so what would be the point of the re entry permit. May as well save the money I would spend on the re entry.

So, it’s too late now anyway, but when I return on a 30-day visa exemption, will my work permit still be valid? Does anyone foresee any problem that may arise in this situation when reentering?

    Thanks

  2. Thanks for the reply!

Rightly or wrongly that appears to be the way it’s done here, and therefore I guess I’m paying it. Good to know this before I go in and waste my time trying to argue my point only to end up paying it in the end anyway, after inevitably getting nowhere.

  3. Hi everyone,

Ordered some cigars to be shipped from Hong Kong. Arrived today, but the post office have sent an invoice for the import duty and VAT. I ordered 25, with an approximate weight of 8 grams each. My understanding is that import duty only needs to be paid on cigars/tobacco if the weight exceeds 250g. According to my invoice the weight is almost 400g. In other words they have incorrectly weighed the entire package, including the box, and not just the cigars.

Anybody got any experience of this? Do you normally pay tax, is it simply unavoidable?

    Thanks

  4. You can open a Thai PayPal with a Bangkok bank savings Debit card. You won’t need a Thai email address, but you’ll need to use a different email address to the one you registered with your UK PayPal though.

I set set mine up a few years ago with no real problems. Assume it’s all still the same.

  5. Hi,

Anybody know when the earliest you can renew the temporary 2-year driving licenses, they first give you when you convert a license from back home, into the standard 5 year license. I need to get an International Driving Permit, but understand they won't give you one on the temporary license. Problem is, I have 6 months left on my temp license. Could I renew this already?

    Thanks.

  6. Sports365.live is a free source and accessible to everyone in the world through their website.

    Where is the 365Sports website?

The addon on Kodi may be considered illegal, but when it goes offline I have lost nothing because I didn't pay for it, and I just move on to the next one.

Hence there will not be a 18+ page thread why someone ran of with my money the addon stopped working

But I can understand your sour grapes, claiming you know the system and stating Thai expat TV and 365Sport are legal entities (lo), but losing a few months of subscription money to them.

    What's the catch-up service like on sports365.live?
  7. I'm a single male in BKK, and I would say my monthly expenditure is approximately 30k-40k per month. That includes a 10k 1 bedroom apartment, round the corner from an MRT station which is only a few stops from Asok. I don't live a crazy, non stop partying lifestyle, but normally go out for drinks once or twice a week. I would say I live a very comfortable life with that money. I don't need to keep checking my money or budget day to day.

Saying that, I know other foreigners here who stay in more "Thai style" apartments who only pay 3-4K rent with air con, or as little as 1.5-2k rent without. And that's within walking distance to a BTS. Personally I need to feel a little more comfortable though. So for a western style apartment, along the mrt or BTS lines, you should be looking anywhere between 9-15k.

  8. Thanks for the replies.

It's not too big, only a cbr250. The guy at Honda(only one to speak English) wasn't sure, so he went to ask the mechanics who said no, they're not allowed to touch it.

A friend of mine called another Honda, who said they would be prepared to change it back to the original, but it would cost upwards of 8,000b, which seems a little excessive for changing the light fittings over.

Sorry, forgot to mention, I'm in BKK.

  9. Bought a 2nd bike a little while back, and the person before me had decided to fit it with one of these trendy headlights. Almost a blue circular glow. Nice enough to look at, but doesn't do much in terms of lighting up the road. Noticed today it was flickering on and off and now won't come on at all. Guessing a loose connection or damaged somewhere. Took it down to the Honda garage. They told me they couldn't touch it as it was an after-market mod. So what is my best plan? Anyone know of anywhere genuine that can sort this out? At least to get it working again, but preferably to change the system back over to the original.

    Many thanks

  10. Thanks for all the replies everyone, it was a big help.

    Quick update:

Eventually decided to do it myself. The guy was more than happy to let me do this and gave me all the signed copies of paperwork I needed. I went up to the Land and Transport office in chatuchak. If you drive in from chatuchak park side, drive straight for 50-100m and it's the big building on the left with the car park in front of it. I did take a Thai friend, which was lucky as all the forms they give you at the information desk are in Thai. But it's only your address and some vehicle details. Most of the staff there seemed more than happy to help.

Unfotuanely I did get there a little late, and the paperwork all needs to be in by 15:30. So that day I only had time to complete the inspection of the bike. For this you need to go to a different building opposite. There's signs that say "drive thru" and "vehicle inspection". They check the serial number and give you some more paperwork.

Like I said, there was no time left to do anything that day, so I returned the next day on my own. Staff there seemed more than happy to help, and spoke reasonable English. One lady sorted out all my paperwork and made sure everything was correct, gave me a ticket and told me to wait for my number. Went to a different desk where another lady checked my paperwork, I paid her, and then she told me to wait a little longer. Few minutes later they called my name and gave my the updated green book and all was done.

    Total cost was 400b.

If anyone else in Bangkok is a bit unsure, hopefully my experience will provide some assistance. I'd say you don't need a Thai person with you, but it definitely helps, if your Thai isn't great. And it's really not that much of a difficult process, all very straight forward.

  11. Thanks for the replies.

The bike will be staying in Bangkok and I'm assuming the bike was registered in Bangkok. He only has a very small business, so can only imagine it's mainly locals he's dealing with.

Does anyone know roughly what it would cost for me to go and change the name myself. He's charging me 2000. It's a 4 year old 250cc. I'm wondering if it would be a better idea to do it myself, so I know it's all done and won't need to worry about relying on someone else. Or do you think I should leave it with this guy and save myself the hassle.

One more thing, you mention the insurance Steve. What exactly does this cover and where do you get it. I heard it's a legal requirement and it's all done at the same time with the tax normally. However I was asking him about it, and my friend translating, and they were saying if I want insurance for the bike then that's up to me and I can go buy that after. I'm think neither really understood what I meant, and didn't know how else to describe it.

    Thanks again

  12. Hopefully somebody can help me with my quick question. Went to see a bike for sale in Bangkok today. Everything seemed fine, he had the key, green book, showed me the pink tax sticker and told me he's just done the tax for 1 year. The guy has a small 2nd hand bike business. So, multiple bikes out the front, all with prices on.

When I asked him about transferring the bike into my name he said not to worry, he would sort that out. I just provide passport and work permit copies and he'll have it changed and will have the green book ready for me in a couple of weeks.

So here's where I'm slightly confused. I've read that you have to take the bike to whichever government office it is that deals with that. Then they have to check the bike before they can transfer it to a new name. So I'm not sure exactly what the procedure here is and why he seemingly doesn't need to do this.

If anyone could offer some advice or experience here, it would be greatly appreciated.

  13. With 365sport you can both record and watch via catchup, any program that has aired over the past ten days.

Previous post was in response to this post.

    Thanks

Do you personally subscribe to this service, or does anybody else on here? Is it worth the price? Does streaming run fine with a basic broadband connection or is there a lot of lagging?

I used it for the whole of last season and only had problems twice, when thunderstorms over Malaysia prevented 365sport from uploading the stream. I could still use the catchup facility to watch the whole game once the weather problems ceased.

I have a basic 10mb (590 baht pm) internet package from TOT and never had any problems. The quality is good and consistent with no lagging. At 600 baht per month for twenty two sports channels, including all the live EPL, plus the catchup and record facilities, it's probably competitively priced.

But personally, because I don't need the catchup and record facilities I have decided to switch to ilikeHD. It gives a total of 110 live sports channels, including all EPL matches, for 250 baht per month. Have been testing it recently and the quality seems to be comparable to 365sport.

Both 365sport and ilikeHD also have web links and/or apps to watch on Android and Apple devices, but you can only access it on one device at a time.

I've also been using 365sport's sister channel, Expat TV, for a few years now and have been equally satisfied with the quality and reliability.

Thanks for all this info. I've been having a look at the options you've mentioned and ILikeHD seems great with the amount of channels they offer. There website offers little information without signing up, but do you know if there is any plans to offer a record/catch up feature for this service? The homepage does show a 'record' button, but as mentioned, without signing up its hard to find more info. Perhaps this is just a generic image they put on the homepage.

  15. The GMMZ satellite box has a USB so you can record on a memory stick.

A bit crude but it works.

    Thanks for the reply.

How much is it per month for GMMZ and do they show all(majority) of EPL games and champions league?

Are all GMMZ boxes the same, is USB recording straight forward and appear as the same quality as it normally should?

    Many thanks

  16. Hi,

I've been searching the forum to see if I can find an answer to my question. What is the best option for me to record English Premier League matches in Thailand? Other topics have addressed TrueVisions PVR, however as TrueVisions no longer hold the rights to televise EPL games, this would be of no use to me. I'm not really worried about recording or even watching anything else as I can do that from my PC or IPad using SkyGo. All I want to be able to do is record EPL games which are on during the night.

I'm back in the UK at the moment. Would it be worth investing in a DVD recorder and bringing it back with me? Would this be compatible with a CtH(or other cable provider) box? Are there any other universal PVR boxes available in Thailabd which I could connect to any service?

Any advice on this would be great.

    Thank you,

    Andrew
