    1. Hi .I had a bamboo one ,with straw roof .Cost B4000 new .Within 2 years it was infested with insects ,and we were warned if a lantern from Loy katrung landed on it it could have been a fire risk .

From your comments, the notions of it catching fire, or becoming insect-ridden, fill me with dread.  Such helpful input, thank you.

  2. I'm looking to buy a small sala.  Can anyone recommend a Chiang Mai company who can manufacture, deliver and construct the sala, please?  Size to be approximately 7ft. square. An indication of cost would be really helpful.

    Thank you so much,

With all respect I have been here over a year and every time I eat Thai food I throw up later that day, I wonder if anyone else suffers like me.

Possibly an allergy to an ingredient, worth trying to narrow it down.   I'm allergic to shellfish, and the side effects (vomiting) usually occurred  a couple of hours after I'd eaten.

  4. Hello there, John,

    Phim's address details:

    Phim Little Dress

    55/5 Moo 14

    Wat Umong

    Soi 4 Suthep Road

    Chiang Mai

    550000

    Tel: 0884 140528

    https://www.facebook.com/phimlittledressshop/?fref=ts

As you come into Moo 14, follow the road, and as it bends to the right slightly, there is a 7-11 on your left. On the opposite side of the road, there is a beauty salon or hairdressers.  Look past it and you will see Phim's sign.

There is an excellent tailor I know , they do alterations at VERY  fair prices..  ''Scandy Collection'' ..check them out on tripadvisor for directions.. Right on the moat  not far from Thaepae Gate .More reasonable and inexpensive than any other tailors  I've found .. Ask for Paul ..very nice man.

    Hello there DKNY77.

I'd just like to let you know that I persued  your "Scandy" recommendation.  A friend used them during a recent visit, and I have just had them  copy my favourite trousers.  Excellent results all round.

    Thank you so much,

What about dips..., such as french onion, homus, baba ganush, guacamole etc etc. Able to source these anywhere in CM ?
Plus what about double brie and camembert ?

They don't sell cheese, but Chiang Mai Bread offer an assortment of dips.  They deliver, too.  Free, in the city.  If you live further out, a call to them may be useful. They do say to enquire if they deliver to your area.   Everything I've ordered has been excellent.

Some of what they offer, aside from bread:

    Peanut butter (100% natural) 180gr jar - 75 THB
    Tomato/Basil salad - 80 THB
    Hummus 250gr - 80 THB
    Hummus 500gr - 140 THB
Roasted Tomato Hummus 250gr - 95 THB (bit spicy)
    Roasted Tomato Hummus 500gr - 180 THB
Black Currant Preserves 220gr jar - 90 THB
    Vegan Butter 250gr - 150 THB
Dill Cream Cheese 200g jar - 170 THB (vegan cheese)

Raw Almond Milk (unsweetened 100% natural) 500ml - 100 THB

Bruschetta Set - Baguette (Not yet toasted) + Tomato/basil Salad - 120 THB
    Hummus Dip Set - 3 Pita's + Hummus 250g with topping + cucumber and carrots 150 THB

Mango Salsa 300gr (seasonal specialty) - 80 THB Now available

Hope there's something there for you,

Regarding making your own..., do tommies up this way rippen to the extent that they have full flavour ?
Many I see at the markets seem to be picked way too early

    Hi Sandy,

I use a mix of large, and baby tomoatoes, with a little tomato puree or passata, and have the sauce on a slow simmer. I find the flavour intensifies as the sauce reduces down.

    Hope this helps,

Transport is another issue altogether...there are more than enough traveling down the main road in the day time though the number is deceptive as have set routes taking off from the Iron Bridge to Lamphun etc.  You do not see many "freelance" or "red"  Songtaews and never really a tuk tuk.....and at night it is pretty much non existent.

That road from the Lanna International Church to the Chiang Mai Lamphun road gets reasonable traffic in the day but it's not really anything that people "walk"...As I recall (as a driver) there is not even any footpath for great chunks of it.  Definitely not lit for a night time walk.

Check the flooding in the past. This area may be prone to water damage.

Thank you both for your insights and replies.  Definite food for thought.

  10. Hello everyone,

    Any local knowledge, please?

I viewed a rental property today which I'm really interested in. It's over the river (I'd quite like to be this side of town), but not having been this far down until today, I don't know much about the area. I have read some blogs and posts, but they're conflicting and not especially recent. Some mention this is a flood area, or has been in the past.

The house is off the Old Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road. There is a "triangular" White Church on the corner -  it may be Soi 3.  I'm unsure if the area is Wat Ket or Nong Hoi. The Gymkhana Club is a little way up the main road.  The house itself, is quite tucked away and the area is leafy, which I like enormously.  My concerns are: is the area is safe, are there any soi dog issues, and if songthaews are readily available, especially at night-time, should I wish to go out for dinner or to the night market etc?   I do not have my own transport.

If anyone lives locally, advice will be very welcome.

    Thank you so much,

Yes I am aware of that but I'm not looking for white bread , more the German type or Scandinavian , country bread with lots of fiber.

Bei Otto in Bangkok knows how to make them .

    Hello there Balo,

You may like to take a look at Chiang Mai Bread on facebook.   They offer an aray - Wholewheat, Multigrain, Rye, Sourdough, Pitta. They deliver free within the city, but will also go further afield, I understand.  The Whole Wheat Pitta and the home-made Hummus are both divine.  I buy the large hummus and freeze half.  It works a treat.

I don't like beer, so I have no idea what's good, bad, or positively vile.

My friend will, I'm sure be happy to sample.....in the interests of finding the best quality, of course......:whistling:

Nimman sounds like a plan, as we'll be eating there some of the time.

    Thank you so much,

Send a PM to the guy who started this thread:

He's made it his life's mission to know all the places in town that offer specials on beer.

If you want something a little classier, Le Meridien has a buy 1 get 1 free promotion at their lobby bar from 6 pm to 8 pm on mixed drinks.

Thank you, Nancy.  Le Meridien will be a nice weekend option.

When you say happy hour is there a particular time of the day you are thinking of targetting or do you just want to know where you can get cheap booze period, as happy hour times can vary quite a bit.

Hello there.  Just pre-dinner drinks, really. From 6:30-8pm, or thereabouts.

    Thank you,

  15. Hello all,

Once again, I've done a search on the forum to no avail.

Please can you recommend some decent bars/restaurants in town offering "Happy Hour?"   I've not needed to look for this until now, but an impending visit by a friend who enjoys a beer or two, has made me think about it.  I had a look around this morning when I went into town and saw one restaurant on Thapae Road with a "Happy Hour" sign, but it would be good to have more options.

    Thank you so much,
