Yeah, but Im living in south Thailand. Where cop's english starts and ends with "Oh, Herro farang".

Don't bother - a good cop should have his Thai law in his pocket ... at least one of them ... if not - stay on your English version !!! That is the one that you can read and understand and argue upon ... you can't argue on a Thai Law book that you can't read. But you can stand your ground with this copy.

... print two of the law translations and give him one to start learning English !!! Which City are you in ?? Phuket ???

Did you drive all the way up to Bangkok with your bike ???

Thanks for sharing the traffic laws.

I notice though that these laws apply to all vehicles.
It does not specify motorcycles, just that all vehicles must keep to the left lane.

That seems so to me too !!!

And it is possible you get away with showing this law ... and I would still show it in English - to confuse them !!!

So YES - also cars and busses and trucks are supposed to drive as left as possible ...

Good to see that that works on the freeways ... :passifier::post-4641-1156694606:

  3. ... and by the way -

It was a favorite trick of the police to put a road block across the inside two lanes and then stop and fine all the bikes that were forced into the outside to pass.

This was the situation I was running into - 6 trucks on the left lane, 8 SUVs in the middle and cars being able to drive on the right lane.

That would fit SECTION 34 a. there is obstruction on the road plus d. and e. (see above !!)

  4. I had the same trouble - I was in lane 3 and got stopped with my "big" bike (PCX 150) ... ;-)
My arguments that I had to turn right in around 300 meters were thrown away by the officer - I would only be allowed 30 meters before to start going right (which by the way is incorrect - as per Section 36 it is AT LEAST 60 METERS !!!).

So - I did not want to take that - I looked up the Thai Traffic law - and see and wow:

    http://thailaws.com/law/t_laws/tlaw0140_5.pdf

    SECTION 34 states it:

... the driver shall keep to the uttermost left-hand side lane. ... Except following situations:

    d. when overtaking another vehicle   (OK that does not work if the road is empty !!)

    e. when driving faster than vehicles in the left-hand side lane

I went to the police station and told them I do not agree to the ticket as per Section 34 d & e - as I was overtaking slower vehicles ... AND - I GOT THRU WITH IT ... !!!

Since then I do always have a printout of the above law text in my "BIG" bike. ;-)

I can't promise you that they will accept it - but it is worth a try !!!!

  5. Hey Charlotte,

I hardly write comments - but I read the topic completely and I want to give you also my 5 Cent opinion.

DO NOT GO BACK TO THAILAND ... same as Moonmoon and others try to tell you.

I have read your stories - and I am happy I have a Chinese GF here in TH and I only lost nearly all my money trying to start a business here - which is hard if you are not Thai and don't speak enough of the language.

And as Moonmoon said about "Loss of Face" - I know China and Chinese too well - I guess that may be your problem too. But if I was you - try to find a new partner - from oversees - try to forget, try to get happy and when you are and you have it all - then show off to your Ex if you then still think you have to ...

Get stronger before you fight. Don't fight a fight that you can not win. Train for it ... get yourself better. Improve.

And when you are ready - show the world that you made it.

And by the way - and I know it may be hard for people who haven't been thru what you have been thru - but suicide is not the option and also not "I don't care what happens to me" ...

Even that your parents might not understand you - and how could they - try to get inside their minds - they have been raised Chinese and will always be. You have evolved to a multi-culty person (you are no longer a real Chinese ... ;-) !!)

[That was actually a positive thought ...lol].

Don't blame your family to not understand you ... they were raised different.

Go online - search for friends abroad ... many friends - visit them wherever they are - US, Germany, Australia ... flight tickets are getting cheaper and cheaper  (if you don't book originating from China).

There are different ways to heal your wounds. And there are different ways to get back on your Ex.

But you will need to practice patience ...

You already got a lot of people who wrote nice answers in this post and whom I guess you could consider friends if you wanted - I see so many topics where people write so many bad comments - you hardly have that in here.

Think about it and really - consider everything else but coming to Thailand.

Regarding your Embassy/Country - they will be the ones who might want to stop you going to Thailand ... so even if you get a Thai Visa - you know that also China as a country hates loosing face - so they don't want their citizens having or doing trouble abroad ... they can stop you from leaving the country ... so don't do more what could upset you or your country ... do positive things for yourself first !!! ;-)

And - talking about it might help you getting over it ...

Hey - good luck and don't waste your life ... it is too precious.

  6. Hey guys - I am not 100% completely in on the story, but my two kids are schoolmates of Daniel and Katia.

Seeing this accident on video gets me shocked to my bones. And YES - the two kids are lucky to be alive.

I hope the bus driver will be punished accordingly - but that does not help the kids at present.

There are many discussions why letting the kids drive in Thailand. And YES - it is a question. But answer it yourself: Their father is taking care of them alone. So I guess that answers the question - they have a license to drive and they do it out of necessity I guess. Yes - a trained driver might have seen the danger - but ... can we always say we would ??? No blame on the kids. The had worn helmets  and had a license.

Now regarding the insurances - as I heard they are paying a part - heard a number of 380,000 THB - and I guess some of you have seen that this was used up in only 2 days in ICU.

For all guys who have a heart and kids themselves - help with the fundraiser ... if you don't trust the internet - donate to the school - that has been holding a fundraiser on Wednesday March 8. And I guess they will also do it 100% for Daniel and Katia after tomorrow.

Below are the school address and phone numbers.

I was able to support my kids with doing good things (baking cakes and cookies to sell and submit a few paintings (25+/-) from my company that got sold in the auction on Wednesday) plus some cash, but again - every action counts.

As a father of 2 kids I urge all of you to do something for Daniel and Katia.

    Thank you very very much.
