  1. Just reading Asok/Sukhumvit junction is now being barricaded with tyres etc. Can anyone confirm if the mob has spread east along Sukhumvit?

again, its not a matter of the Reds surging out of Ratchaprasong. Red neighborhoods are uprising on all four points of the Bangkok compass.

As we saw yesterday at Klong Teoi, they are surging out of their neighborhoods with a very clear tactic: sandwich the army formations and cut them off from resupply.

What makes you think that only Reds can be surrounded? the army is far more vulnerable to encirclement because its supply base is not indiginous to sympathetic neighborhoods, and the materiel it requries is more complex.

TV posters have to stop looking at this as an issan invasion of RathaP. we are way passed that.

the assasination of Sae Deang has set off an uprising of Reds all over Bangkok and, it would seem from certain reports, perhaps over other parts of thailand.

there is no debate; the reds are armed, even if there arms are by themselves no match for thai army. but the reds have something that has greater currency on the field of battle: determination.

gentlemen, you need to open your eyes as to what is happening all around you. we live in a dangerous place becoming more dangerous by the day.

You're assuming that Seh Daeng was shot by a Gov't ordered sniper. I'm not saying this isn't possible, however, it is equally as likely that he was targeted and shot by another faction of the Reds to get him out of the way OR by others who have suffered because of his non-willingness to agree with the majority of the Red leaders to continue negotiations and enter the reconciliation process.

Maybe I missed something, but I was under the understanding that it is still unknown who carried out the shot on Seh Daeng.

  2. After the last announcement by the Gov't...anyone left in the Rachaprasong area and the other areas the Gov't has outlined after 3pm should be held responsible for thier actions, detained, tried, and sentenced accordingly. Those with who remain with their children should have their sentences multiplied by the number of minors who cannot be charged as they should also be responsible for endangering their innocent kids. Would this be possible?

  3. Right.

Try to avoid bloodshed by Army put Abhisit in power.

try to avoid bloodhed by storm protesters by illegal (under int conv. rules) on April 10th.

avoid bloodshed by give sodiers live arms and anti aircraft guns on same day as well.

avoid more bloodshed by let pro gov protestors throw bricks bottle and bombs from army lines at silom.

avoid more blooshed by shoot somebody in head in front of world media.

Only thing Abhisit and Anupong want to avoid is ELECTIONS

Promise you my friend, nobody agrees with you outside this webforum and maybe your missus.

    You can't be serious....

So a relatively small group of people with dubious ties (whether by being paid or "convinced" to join and stay (possibly forced) who turn out to carry out terrorits acts, or even at the very least hold the capital city, its people, and economy hostage by illegal means should automatically be granted snap elections? What precedent would that set and would you want to live under that type of rule for any period of time? If so, that's your chooice, but I think the people of Bangkok (most likely the rest of Thailand) want this situation over as soon as possible with the least amount of injuries and bloodshed as possible. They have been warned multiple times to leave and return to normalcy, those who have stayed may have to pay the piper.

  4. Reds retaliate by torching a bus......a police bus !

    Now that's really amazing.....

So many security forces all around, and these guys do whatever they want (trap soldiers, turn cars over, torch bus, take army vehicles over, etc.....)

for 10 weeks already and some people still think Abhisit is in control. so many great minds on here backing CRES etc.

looks more like a fascist gov every day with media off, AIS and DTAC off (they going to be get a big pay back for that) police on bike look like Iranian Bajis.

same time PAD scream for more blood and less elections.

Think.. Hey Nero, if you in Bangkok try and find a violin shop quick

Abhisit and ANupong have tried to avoid bloodshed.

That doesn't help the reds, so they have pushed and provoked the army at every point to get the army to respond.

As soon as the army respond, the reds come out screaming how blood thirsty the army and Abhisit is.

    EXACTLY

  5. I totally understand what OP Pis saying about Buffet's although the comment did seem directed at Robb. Probably just the wording, but not the intent. Normally the food isn't the same quality as the normal menu items as it has to be made in large batches so sometimes loses something.

Anyway, we went down to Los Cabos last night as well and it seems that Robb and his staff did pull it off well. The restaurant and patio were packed and the food was great. I really loved the Turkey Mole (and the Duck Carnitas) and I think that is what actually lured me in (it's not on the regular menu). The ribs of course were tasty and tender. The line was a bit long, but they did refresh the food quite frequently so wasn't a big deal.

I doubt they anticipated it being as successful as it was so next time I would imagine they will have food on the patio and/or upstairs as well. One thing that I was surprised by was the efficiency of the bar staff.... drinks seemed to be easy to get and flowing quite freely. I love those margaritas!!!

This was the first Cinco de Mayo I've been to in Bangkok. Can't wait to go again next year...haha.

  6. Yea.... Looks like it should be a good party. Pretty good deal with the buffet at 295 Baht. Can't wait to try the Tukey Mole..... haven't had that forever! Robb said they are having a two DJ's and maybe even some pinatas to smash.....

Back at home we used to celebrate Cinco de Mayo every year.... kind of like St. Paddy's day but Mexican style. Lots of food and lots of drinking.... :)

  7. Still have yet to try T&S, but will have to do so in the next week or so. La Monita was good when I went there, the burrito wasn't huge, but had a nice taste. I really like their torta and the the carne asada fries (even though that is probably just partly mexican). I hvane't been back for a few weeks as its off my map, but if it is being closed for private parties, I'd suggest they somehow notify people so they don't go all the way there only to find its not open.

Went to Los Cabos today again and was VERY HAPPY to see that they now have 195 Baht set lunch speicals. I suppose they will post it on their site soon. Seems a good option for lunch. Had a Taco Salad today....first time I had it, and for 195 Baht.... a pretty good lunch!

  8. Getgoin.... I think Coyote came in at a time when there hadn't been any new Mexican food on the BKK scene and their flashy or corporate branding seemed to draw people in. I always thought it was a bit expensive, especially the margaritas, and the food a bit generic but they did have a "nicer" decor and atmosphere than most of the other options. Now it seems there is a few more options so maybe they are being squeezed a bit or their customers are looking elsewhere. They still do well for ladies night as it seems, so at least the girls are drinking and the guys following on those nights! I go for that once in a while, but rarely to eat or drink otherwise.

  9. Went to La Monita last week with a friend. Was a bit tough to find back in that plaza but once we got there (lunch time) the place was pretty full. There are only about 5 tables (maybe 20ish seats total?), so I suppose it gets pretty packed at that time and maybe dinner too. Nice enough atmosphere for a simple tacqueria. We had to wait a few minutes til someone could clean off the table from the people before us and then we sat down.

We ordered the cheese fries (forgot the menu name), a chicken burrito, and a torta. Was hoping to get the cheese fries first but everything came at the same time. Oh well, we dealt with it.. :) I felt a bit bad for the owner who seemed to pretty much be working by himself that day. Hopefully its not like that every day. It can be hard to keep staff, especially when just starting out as a small business. The cheese fries were good, although not mind-blowing. My friend and I split the burrito and torta in half and each had part of each. The burrito was good and easy to eat as it was wrapped in tin-foil. It had all the fillings I liked and was pretty tasty. The torta, which is something I haven't had since I was last in mexico was a big surpirse. Very tasty and something taht I would definately order again. They should get on chefsxp or fbp so that I can, because its not likely that I'll be making it back to the restaurant very often as it would require a special trip rather than being a place I would go to hang out and sit with friends, etc..or even just a stop on the way to somewhere else.

All in all I think the food was quite good and he should do well PROVIDED that he offers some sort of delivery option as I think most will feel the same as me about the location. Prices OK, not cheap, but not real expensive either. More expensive than Sunrise, but a much better value IMHO and much cheaper and better food than Coyote. For me, I am much more likely to go somewhere I can either stay and hang out for a couple hours (with or without a group of friends) or is conveniently located for pick-up (or delivery).

Mexican food tastes best with beer, margaritas, and friends so if I am going out to eat Mexican, for now the first choice is Los Cabos. They have the best mix of food, ambience, atmosphere, and location for me plus they have a great happy hour. I also happen to love fish tacos, fajitas, beef ribs, and margaritas all of which they do very well. La Monita will more likely be a once in a while visit (probably lunch time) when I happen to be in that area.

For me, my top three are:

    1. Los Cabos

    2. La Monita

    3. Still waiting (but if I had to choose I'd say hmmmm... Coyote on ladies night or Senor Picos)

  10. Of course if you don't reside in Krungthep, you will have to get a visa at the border, but you keep the time frame.

    Thanks for this....

Is it feasible to do the same thing but get the visa at the border, and still make it to the Thai Embassy in Vientiane to submit on same day?

Also, no problem making it back to Udon for the 5:40PM flight?

  11. Hi all...

Have been looking through the threads on doing a visa run to Vientiane from BKK. What is the best way to do it from the two options below.

Option 1. Fly directly from BKK to Vientiane on TG leaving at 11:45 AM and arriving in Vientiane at 12:55 PM. Obtain a Laos Visa at the airport and proceed to hotel. Check out the city for the rest of the day and wake up in AM to go to Thai Consular. Apply for non-imm visa early in the morning, pay the fee, and return to hotel and stay another night. Next day pick up visa fly back to BKK at 9:50 PM (or earlier if the Visa can be picked up earlier). This seems to be the easiest option, but also the flight is more expensive than option 2.

Option 2. Fly from BKK to Udon Thani on Nok Air at 1:55 PM and arrive at 2:55 PM. Then get transport to Nong Khai from Udon (approximately 1 hour?) and obtain a visa at Laos immigration around 4:30-5:00. Then direct to Vientiane to check into hotel. Wake up next day, apply for visa, pay fee, and sightsee for the day. Stay one more night and wake up next morning and collect visa at appropriate time. Then after collecting the visa, return to Nong Khai, then to Udon for the 6:30 PM flight back to BKK.

Have any of you done either or both? Considering the price difference of 3,000 Baht in flights but the convenience of landing in Laos and not dealing with the land border.... which is the preferred option?

Thank you very much in advance for any help or suggestions!

  12. Tried the taco tuesdays last night! Can't beat the bargain and its a great excuse to sip down a few margaritas or beers while enjoying the tacos (although smaller than the normal offerings, but what would you expect for 25B each!). Tempted to go get the rock lobsters again today, but apparently there is a launch party tomorrow as Sabaijai mentioned. Didn't get all the info, but I guess they are having a party and so that would make it three days in a row for me. Decisions decisions decisions......

  13. Really informative review SpoliaOpima. Judging from some of your earlier posts, you seem that you were pleasantly surprised by your meal and experience. Hopefully thats a good sign that they are doing something right by being able to please someone who has the knowledge of the different mexican cuisines as you seem to.

It's funny....I was in on Wedensday eve and I saw a couple having the rock lobsters. I remember Robb the owner saying he was going to do that sometime in the future, but I didn't realize they were already doing it. We of course orders those (to split between three) and they came out very nicely done with the three sauces/salsa as well as a side of Margarita butter. At that price (550 Baht) I don't think is another restaurant (Mexican or otherwise) in town that has rock lobsters that are done this well. Kudos to Robb and Los Cabos for getting creative and offering something different.

I remember a few months back when I first talked to him about Los Cabos, the concept, and the menu. He said that of course they would have all the most popular dishes like Tacos, Burritos, enchiladas, etc., but wanted to also offer the Chilli Rellenos (which I believe he said are flown in fresh) as well as move more toward the Baja inspired seafood dishes. So, along with the fish tacos, Yellowfin Tuna, and the monster prawns, he has now added the rock lobster. For me, this is great as while I do love a good burrito, tacos, and enchilladas it is nice to have something special that you just won't get anywhere else in town.

I agree that the atmosphere is really nice there as well, especially at the bar on the patio or upstairs on the balcony. One of my only problems with the place is they only have 2 beers on tap. I know its not really a pub, but I wouldn't mind a cold draft Asahi to wash down my food (especially if its on happy hour!). I've found the happy hour to be quite a good deal, and only wish that I could actually start at 2PM (they go from 2pm-7pm!).

Will have to try taco tuesdays and this Friday deal you are talking about as well.

Quick question.... anyone know why the food/restaurant threads are getting moved/spilt up? Some are still in the Western Food forum while others are being moved to BKK? Anyway, hope that they all either go one way or another so we can keep track.

  14. Robb at Los Cabos is having his chilis air lifted in. I think you connoisseurs will be pleasantly surprised.

Robb's Chili's at Los Cabos are quality and I like how they are going more towards the Seafood and fish, but still have the popular mexican standby's that most people expect from a Mexican Restaurant.

I still need to give La Monita a try as it sounds like they are doing quite a good job with the tacqueria. Will have a stop by soon and post some pics if I can.

  15. I agree with Dirtbiketrails..... I do love the guacamole and eating ribs while drinking some beer Al Fresco with friends always makes for a good time. Last night I had the crispy fish tacos which were really tasty, too bad I didn't have a decent camera with me. Here are a few pics from Los Cabos Facebook page which are making me hungry as I post!

  16. I agree....I wouldn't visit a restaurant or any business that is set up purely for profit more than once, but I do realize that without profit the restaurant wouldn't survive. I am sure Robb set it up because he wanted to serve a well needed niche in the market.....which hopefully translates into profit and longevity for the restaurant and lots of us customers who have found a new home for Mexican food in Bangkok.

  17. From what I have tasted so far.... I think Robb the Chef really knows how to cook. Add to that his passion for and experience with Mexican food and I think this will be a really great addition to Bangkok. Went by last night and looked like they were open. Called there this afternoon and confirmed that they are open for business from here on out. Might stop by for some fajitas and margaritas this eve!

  18. After a few stop bys to see the progress, I was invited to come for a food tasting at the restaurant last night. There was about 15-20 people there and they had chips, salsa, guacamole, small shrimp tacos (tacquitos,?), assorted burritos, grilled chicken, pork ribs, and of course margaritas and beers. It was a very informal testing of part of the menu and to drum up a bit of goodwill prior to the soft launch, which I was told would be sometime this coming week.

The restaurant looked really great, especially as they had just installed most of their outdoor lighting which illuminates the big trees over the verandas and patio area. It looked like there were just some decor items and odds and ends that needed to be put in before they can open to the public. I will say this, I don't know of many places in the center of Bangkok where you can sit outside and enjoy this kind of atmosphere and sip margaritas and beer without going a bit far out. Should be a great place, especially for those who live/work around Sukhumvit.

The food was quite tasty. I tend to like my guacamole a bit chunky and I think Robb (the main partner/Chef) at Los Cabos must feel the same way as that was what we had. The shrimp tacquitos were very nice and a bit different than what is on offer at other mexican places around town. This is where the baja style comes in (fish tacos, shrimp tacos/tacquitos, other seafood items, etc). They also had some excellent chicken and beef burritos on offer, which again were very much to my liking. Interestingly, they did also have BBQ pork ribs and grilled chicken. The pork ribs had a semi-spicy chipotel rub on them and were served dry, with chipotle BBQ sauce on the side. Probably some of the best ribs I have had. Maybe not what you would expect at a mexican restaurant, but trust me if you order them you will be glad they are on the menu! Also, the chicken was so good. It was slowly grilled and came out perfect. They served it with some type of mole, which gave it a bit more bite if this is what you like.

We were also served margaritas, however, Robb mentioned that he had changed the recipe a bit and would be serving slightly different style than what we were drinking. I look forward to tasting the new margaritas and also hope they have a nice selection of different tequilas on hand as well.

Robb mentioned they would be soft opening in a few more days. I will certainly be back once they open and hope to make it my new home for after work drinks and Mexican food lunch/dinner in Bangkok!

    Congrats Robb!

  19. Went by a week or so back now and am told that the place will be open in late November. It looks like a fun place to hang outside and enjoy some tasty margaritas, cold coronas, and some mexican food. The owner seems to be really passionate about mexican food and I used to enjoy going to GARC sometime back. Keep us posted on the exact opening dates if anyone gets them before I do and hope to see you guys there to try it out.

  20. Was just having a quick bite at Suda on Sukhumvit 14 the other day and noticed that the Thai Restaurant that used to be in the beautiful old Thai House across from Suda is being renovated. It looks like they are opening a Mexican Restaurant with a large indoor outdoor bar. They've painted it yellow and green on the outside, putting in outdoor foutains, and expanding the patio area. Its going to be called Los Cabos Mexican Grill. Will be excited to try a new Mexican restaurant and hope that they have great food and drinks so it becomes a landmark. Easy to get to and easy to stumble home from (hopefully full on burritos and Coronas!). Anyone have any more info on this or know when they will be open????
