Hi All,
I'm thinking of a 6-12 month rental at either Hillside 4 or 3.
There seems to be over 35 units for rent in Hillside 4. I've been told city side is cooler and condo walls are pretty thick, the mall below is virtually dead and current prices of units are low.
I think it is a good location for my requirements: walking distance to a lot of amenities, gym downstairs and pretty quite inside units.
I don't know much about Hillside 3.
Any thoughts or alternatives?
Please note I do not want a bike or car at this time.
Thanks

I thought I would be a bit ahead of curve here in the UK when the lockdown was announced and bought 3 cases of discounted Corona 330ml bottles and a liter of port.
Consumed the whole lot on the Monday night with the intention of consuming my own urine over the next 4 days, thereby keeping my self semi sozzled on a permanent basis.
Lined up 4 or 5 pints of pish in the fridge on the Monday night.
Tuesday I felt a little poorly, perhaps a mild dose of the virus I thought. Consumed 4 pints of pish on the Tuesday, with a little twist of lemon to take off the edge and felt merry enough. Replenished a few pints in the fridge.
Wednesday I was still feeling a little peculiar but managed to guzzle down 1 pint of Mondays and 2 of Tuesdays. NB I doubled the lemon to 2 twists and replenished 2 pints in the fridge.
Come Thursday I was feeling a little more chipper and skulled the last 3 pints in spite of an intense gagging reflex, tail end of the virus I thought.
Come Friday the UK Gov. announced that off-licences were allowed to open as essential shops so I abandoned my experiment. I shall probably send my findings to some medical journal when I feel a bit better.

Really depends on where you the economy will be in a years time.
IMHO it's too late to sell if you have an existing portfolio, so painful as it may look I shall be holding my existing positions.
Also, it should be noted that most FTSE companies have delayed reporting and suspended Dividend payments - a prudent if painful move IMHO. P/E ratios will need to be re-assessed as will Dividend yield.
Obviously, as always, companies with a large debt pile should be avoided.
To directly answer your question I will add to my positions in the following on a trickle basis:
AV. - IMHO was undervalued and plenty of spare cash
MARS - Pubs closed, off sales increasing, debt was decreasing
BOO - As long as warehouses function its stable of targeted fashion brands should jog along
PFC - A slim trim company since the SFO investigation was announced and hurt badly by Brent price.
GVC - Shops closed and sporting events cancelled but online still active and a rosy looking future in USA
ITV - Perennial takeover target
VOD - Bit trickier to gauge full debt commitments
As stated previously Fundsmith is a cracking fund as are Lindsell Train.
I do intend to hold for the long term but will top slice when I feel the time is right.
Best of Luck

I still need someone to explain the difference between a bedroom in a house and a small 1 room condo.
As far as I can see they're practically the same.
Nobody forces the guy in the house to sit in the living room all the time, if at all.
Yes, and the difference between a hallway of doors to a small room and a house with all its amenities on the way to your room.
So perhaps upping the rent to 10K each and adding a cleaner twice a week for the house and pool & a fridge in each private room.
Fear of boredom, grumpiness, homophobic behavior and a tendency to over estimate one's sexual prowess could be elevated by a rigorous vetting procedure.
All for 10K each, what a bargain, Dare we think of 11 K each?

Yes fair play to the Thai womens team:
Women's T20 World Cup: Thailand's remarkable rise to first global tournament
Hopefully in 5 years time a formidable force, subject to investment of time, effort and money.
I am fairly confident that in 5 years time the dross that is the BBC will have to compete as a non state backed compulsory purchase item to a free market 'entertainment' supplier.

What a lovely idea, Cobra.
Three people could certainly rent a nice gaff, outside areas, bigger living space, bigger private space for 27K then individually at 9K. Communal car, bikes & bills would be great.
Decent key money deposits & a careful vetting process would be required.
Human nature, of course, is a different matter.
Would you do it?

Thanks very much for your words of wisdom and empathy.
Learned my lessons and will try again soon, a more focused plan and a clearer state of mind will definitely be an advantage.

Have visited LOS over the years since the 1980's, traveled all over in my visits and had a jolly nice time.
End of 2014, after a nasty divorce, farm and all was sold and divvied out and I was pretty burnt out by the whole process, having taken the best part of 18 months. Amazing the low life that appear in this sort of situation.
Still all was done & dusted by October and I found my self footloose & fancy free. I had a few friends in LOS who said give it a go - 90 day visa and see what you think. Excellent idea I thought, not had a decent holiday for 8 years and the retirement situation looks good there.
Culture shock really hit me, 10 years on the farm had maybe mellowed me too much. Heat, noise, colour, smells, crowds and an alien environment were a wake up call from my fond memories.
Visited a few islands and a few places up north and found things really different from my memories.
Pitched up in Jomtien and found it a bit more reassuring, but still felt a tad uncomfortable, not quite a fish out of water but close.
Met a few friends on retirement, 2 were struggling and 1 had assimilated fairly well.
Mistake 1 - stayed in a hotel for 5 months made no effort to find a place to make a bit more homely for myself. Ate out all of the time.
Mistake 2 - Went on holiday mode for 5 months, out every night partying, hanging out with bar flies, heroes and blokes that would shag a frog in mid flight.
Mistake 3 - Did not get an independent mode of transport for myself.
Mistake 4 - She was a lovely girl, honest she was - spoken and written English and a good sense of humour, own car and house. However she could tell lies on her in breath and in her sleep.
Six months later back to the UK. Lessons learned and probably the most important one is how to retire, how to go from an active full on social interactive life to one of semi-dormancy.
Prompted to write this thread after reading some honest replies on here - Threads such as the currently 'running how is your daily routine' I find enlightening .
Perhaps not necessarily related to LOS, but retirement in general. Not sure if it is for me.
Thank you & Chock Dee

Some what sadly, this has been going on for decades, if not centuries.
Totally beyond my understanding , sex with an underage person, Why?
I truly do not understand these people, and less so their clubs that pass on these desires.
Do unto others as you would have done to you.
Have the <deleted> to stop it, if you have any suspisions

Many thanks for the feedback. It was not intended to be a buy versus rent thread or a request for advice in reducing my living costs, simply a comparison of like for like living costs.
I agree, health care is a big expense and needs further addressing.
Many people, in the UK, who purchased a property in the 70's/80's & 90's are sitting on a massive return on their initial investment. While equity release is gaining traction in the UK there is also a lot of asset rich and cash poor home owners.
Should long term care home residence become necessary the house asset will have to be sold to pay for initial care. However, I digress, perhaps a subject for another thread.
Khunper, thanks for your currency conversion and costings. Water by truck?
As Marcusarelus points out rent appears to be cheaper in LOS, I have no intention of buying any more property, either in the UK or LOS so it was a comparable rent I was looking for.
I have tried retiring in Jomtien in 2015 for six months and also Malta for 6 months in 2016 but found my self getting bored rigid but that is something I need to address for my third attempt ???? I have an idea where my failings are.
Thanks

Any particular reason for stainless steel fridges?
I assume you mean commercial fridges, if so be careful as 2nd hand commercial fridges/freezers have generally had a hard life and can be very expensive on electric due to their age. Once you start re-gassing them it is a slippery slope to the scrap yard.
Depending on the proposed use, a few new domestic or non stainless commercial may be a less stressful option.

Dr Jack & Seonal,
Thanks very much, am i correct in thinking that the procedure is the same for a UK resident?
Every 90 days present yourself and passport to an Immigration Office?
If I rent a condo the TM30 is sorted by the person/company I rent from?
Thanks

I have seen some wonderful wall art, in various parts of the world, this is really not art in any form, merely some vandals at work. The end result will need removing from the surfaces at the first opportunity, 'tagging' as i believe it is called is the result of the mixture of special brew, skunk and Valium, mixed in a jar and consumed by the artist before commencement of work.
A far cry from Van Gough, a carafe of absinthe, and a scapel to the lugger, i'm sure you will agree agree!

Also had my first and last taste of dog in the Philippines circa 1986. Understandable it was very tough meat and I was told it was different from domestic due to the lack of inoculations/medicines.
I do remember some of the UK Sunday tabloids at that time running little adverts for a rescue charity that showed a tied up dog ready for slaughter.
Personally feel that the stray dogs in Jomtein DO need to be removed for all the reasons listed above by other posters.
