  1. I have a friend arriving next week at Suv airport, late at night 22:00-23:00.

If the curfew is still in place, will there be taxis around to pick her up?

Will they be able to take her to a downtown hotel?

    Anyone arrived recently like that?

  2. Has anyone got (or know of) a good home in Pattaya area for 4 kittens.

Their mother was killed, and they are only about a week old.

Unfortunately we cannot keep them because we have a large dog that

    hates cats !

If you can help (please!) call me on 081-864-3831(Eng) or 089-203-3693(Thai)

  3. Nobody has made this clear, so:

In Pattaya, the main Songkran day is the 19th. That day nothing moves. It takes hours just to get around

Pattaya, and you will definitely get wet, dirty, and amused (or angry, depending on your type).

The road past the Dusit is definitely on the 'main route' and gets the full blast.

My advice, on 19th, either go out and enjoy it or stay home all day, at least from 10am until 8pm.

The 7 days before that you will occasionally get wet if walking or riding a bike (or Songtaew) but

it is mostly OK, and traffic moves normally.

So having a conference in the days before 19th is not so crazy.

As I said, enjoy or avoid (I enjoy!) :)

  4. Before they build it, perhaps they might get into practice by getting the footpaths in Sukhumvit Rd right THIS time.

And when they've done that, perhaps speed up the building of a decent road from Pattaya to Jomtien.

They have been 'working' on that for over 3 years now, and it is less than 2km of road.

Of course it would help if there were actually any men (or women) working on it!

The idea of them building a nuclear plant is just unthinkable.

And then operating it is another story!

  5. Cheap motorbike rentals + cheap booze + lax traffic laws = Thailand Is Deadliest Holiday Destination For Britons

Don't you think it's the appalling behaviour of Brits overseas?

But that's not what the article says.

It says, of all countries, Thailand is one of the most likely where a Brit will get injured or killed.

It might also be the country where an American or German or Aussie or ... will most likely get injured or killed.

It does not say the Brits are the worst, it says Thailand is (one of) the worst.

Why? I live in Pattaya, and you can hardly park here for the rows and rows of massive motorbikes for

rent (not sure why they have the right to carry on a business on the public road, but that's another issue).

Every day I see visitors of every nationality renting these monsters and then racing around.

Why do you need 750-100cc to get around Pattaya ?

My own theory is that these (male) tourists have small brains, and a small other part of the body.

If Thailand wanted to cut down on the problem, just ban the rental of bikes over (say) 125cc to

visitors unless they have a (proper) driving license for a big one

  6. Laying down the law

New regulations on karaoke, Internet gaming, film ratings set to take effect

    30108573-01.jpg

    BANGKOK: -- .....

The new rules, which also cover Internet cafes, allow children to play computer games for more than three hours and up to six hours a day, says Culture Minister Teera Salakpetch.

Those under 15 will be allowed to use the service from 2pm to 8pm from Monday to Friday and from 10am to 8pm during holidays and school breaks, while those aged 15 to 18 can play games until 10pm, Teera says.

The Cabinet also agreed that an IT system to keep kids under 18 from playing computer games for more than three hours a day should be ready before a ministerial regulation amendment is proposed later, he added.

    .....

    nationlogo.jpg

    -- The Nation 2009 07 29

Might work if kids must have a picture bearing smart card

and it fits in a card reader on EVERY internet cafe computer,

or at least on a master computer for a network this MIGHT be controlled.

But it is gonna be quite pricey, need a windows compatible software, in Thai of course,

the SAME version on every Icafe computer in the nation,

and need an absolute nation wide implementation students and cafes,

and all sorts of issues beyond that.

The HOURS stated are ridiculously too much. 6 hours of gaming a day is OK... what ARE they thinking!

2 hours a day of non educational and that's it.

Basically kids, you have between 4-6 pm then go home for dinner.

There is little likelihood of an 'IT system' being able to regulate this.

These guys just don't UNDERSTAND the technology at all.

You missed the whole point of the gaming control law - the IT system !

The law will allow a few policemen to pay for their family dinner with tea money

from the internet cafes, but the big money will be the (impossible) IT system.

Think of a 500M Baht project (or more), and how much of that will go into back pockets

  7. BREAKING NEWS:

Abhisit Vejjajiva elected new Prime Minister of Thailand

    abhisit-vejjajiva.jpg

    Abhisit Vejjajiva elected new PM

BANGKOK: -- Opposition Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva wins a majority with 235 - 198 votes to become Thailands 27th premier

    -- MCOT 2008-12-15 at 10:57

That is good news. Congratulations to Abhisit Vejjajiva.

I hope he can 'stay the course'.

Actually I am feeling quite optimistic now, with Obama taking over from Bush as well.

Better enjoy it while it lasts !

  8. I like to give reaction on the story's over doberman dogs, and how bad dogs they are. :D

I'am owner from now a 2 year old doberman who i buy as puppy.

She is an nice dog for my two other huskey's breed, and never do bad to me my partner or quest allso not children. :o

That she is a doberman make that she protect the house, why people are afraid for her.

As owner from dogs i don't like that my dogs bark that the neighbours have problems with my dogs, but every dog give reaction.

My contact with my neighbours is like this that they can tell me when there is a problem.

I'am sorry that the doberman have a bad reputation. :D

That is why I tell a good story about this short of breed, and hope that more people have this experience with this breed.

    Hi Robert.

I too had a female Doberman as a puppy almost 10 years ago. She was a loving family dog,

loved kids, never got angry with anything (even the local cats - at one point she nursed for two weeks

two baby kittens a stray cat brought into our house !)

Unfortunately she died earlier this month of stomach cancer.

I want to replace her. Do you know (or anyone else reading this know) where I can find a Doberman

puppy. Price not an issue, and doesn't need to be 'top pedigree'.

  9. If you are applying for the extension of stay based on retirement. You now need to provide a map from Immigration to your house.

How ridiculous is this? Immigration cant read an address? If someone has a detailed map of my moo ban...please let me know.......I've never found one.

    Will a sketch suffice?

    Seriously...is this a joke?

    Very ridiculous.

So a retiree can come live here (well, for now anyway), but his wife is not welcome ??

And how many wives of retirees are going to have an independent income?

And as for maps, have you ever met a Thai person who can read one ?

I seriously question the sanity of some of the people 'running' this country

  10. Did the UK Consul made the letter there and then or did you have to apply one day and get the letter the next ?

This may help some of you, if you are similar to me (many years in Thailand,

    good income, frequent trips abroard:

Well, I finally got my fully legal 'retirement' visa for Thailand. :o

What I have been doing free and paperless for the last 10 years, I can

now continue to do - leave the country and return as often as I like.

But it took me 4 trips to the Pattaya Immigration office and almost

10,000 Baht to achieve this, though it was quite 'simple' :

    1. Get a letter from my Embassy that I have enough income every month.

Luckily UK Embassy has a consul in Pattaya who sits outside the

Immigration Office each morning to help us. Even though my income

comes from the US, they 'certified' it by looking at my bank book !

    2000 Baht.

    2. Get a letter from my Thai bank that I have an account with at least

    2000 baht in it. Free

    3. Convert my visa waiver on arrival to non-immigrant status.

Copies of passport, bank account, photo. 1900 Baht

    4. Convert my non-immigrant visa to a one-year retirement visa.

Copies of passport, bank account, photo, letter from embassy,

    letter from bank. 2000 Baht

    5. Get multi-entry re-entry visa for one year

Copies of passport, photo. 3800 Baht

And I will have to do all that again next year !

And report at Immigration every 3 months.

    Welcome to Thailand !!

If anyone needs to discuss details - //contact via PM// :D

I gave him the info one day, picked up the letter the next

  11. I am a UK passport holder.

I entered Thailand from the UK, on the 20th Sept 06 and was given a 30 day stay. I travelled to Cambodia on the 3rd October.

On 16th October I returned to Thailand and was given a 30 day stay. I travelled to China/Tibet on 25th October.

On 17th November I returned to Thailand and was given a 30 day stay.

So far (at time of posting this topic), I have entered Thailand 3 times and spent a total of 23 days here since my first entry on 20th Sept 06.

I intend to return to the UK from Bangkok on the 15th or 16th December, in the meantime if I visit another country in South East Asia for up to 2 weeks will I be allowed back in to Thailand?

Within a six month period, Is there a limit to how many times I can enter Thailand and still keep getting these 30 day stays if my total stay has not exceeded 90 days?

    Thanks

The ONLY limit is max 90 days in Thailand within 6 months. You can go in and

out as often as you like.

I am not sure if day of departure and day of arrival count, though.

  13. I am not clear on this.

Is the limit 3 visas or is it 90 days?

For example, if I make 3 trips in 3 weeks, will I be refused entry on the 4th return?

Or can I make any number of arrivals within 90 days.

If only 3 trips, does the 90-day absence rule start at the departure date of my 3rd

trip, or 90 days after my first arrival, or ...

Also, when I came in on 2 Oct, the officer wrote 'Q' against 'VisaClass' on the stamp,

and highlighted it with a marker. They have never done this before. Any idea what

    'Q' means
