  1. I am returning to Australia and selling my 4 year old house in Nong Khai.

Absolute Mekong River frontage. Magnificent views across to Laos and great sunsets. River protection in place.

10 metre fully automated salt-chlorinated swimming pool. Beautiful garden.

3 aircon bedrooms , big kitchen, large living areas inside and out, separate laundry.

Quiet area only 3km from Nong Khai but market and restaurants nearby.

Email me or phone 0879074052 and I will send you more details and photos.

  2. I had a 10 metre fully tiled fully automated salt chlorinated pool built a year ago

by a Thai guy called OT phone 0872007499. He lives outside Udon Thani, towards Nong Khai.

I have previously had 3 pools in Australia and OT's pool is by far the best!!

    Ot does not speak English.

  3. Hi Koh Samui residents, I would welcome your advice.

I am an Australian and have been living in Nong Khai for almost 2 years with my Thai wife and her 2 daughters of 9 years and 11 years.

Nong Khai is a nice town but it is a bit of a backwater. Most farangs pass through here to get to Laos, consequently the town has little farang infrastructure. I like Thai people and Thai food (although Issan food doesn't grab me!) but I yearn for a little bit of multi culture which unfortunately NK ain't got. A pizza in an Italian restaurant or some chicken masala in an Indian restaurant or a glass of wine in a nice bar. NK ain't got it. It has a few farang bars which most of the time are empty. I am a water person - I still have a home on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. As a compromise the house I bought just 5km out of NK is right on the banks of the Mekong. But it ain't the beach!

And so I am seriously considering a move south to Samui, Ao Nang/Krabi or Phuket, all of which I have visited on several occasions.

What is it like living on Samui? I am looking for a quiet place to live but close enough to drive to a tourist beach where I can go for a walk, a talk, a nice meal and a cold glass of wine. Perhaps Samui no longer has that. I read that even the north coast of the island has gone crazy! I also need a good school for 2 bright girls - they currently attend a Thai Catholic college in NK. For shopping we have a large Tesco in NK. How about Samui? I assume Samui has good standard medical centres.

I will be most grateful for any replies I receive.

  4. Hi Ao Nang/Krabi residents. I would welcome your advice.

I am an Australian and have been living in Nong Khai for almost 2 years with my Thai wife and her 2 daughters of 9 years and 11 years.

Nong Khai is a nice town but it is a bit of a backwater. Most farangs pass through here to get to Laos, consequently the town has not developed a farang infrastructure. I like Thai people and Thai food (although Issan food doesn't grab me!) but I yearn for just a litle bit of multi culture which unfortunately NK ain't got. A pizza in an Italian restaurant or some chicken masala in an Indian restaurant or a glass of wine in a nice bar . NK ain't got it. It has a few farang bars which most of the time are empty. I am a water person - I still have a home on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. As a compromise, the house I bought just 5 km out of NK is right on the banks of the Mekong. But it ain't like the beach!

And so I am seriously considering a move south and Ao Nang/Krabi is top of my list, followed by Phuket and Samui. I am not a dreamer. I have been to all three several times and I am coming to Krabi for a month in May for a serious look.

    My topics for discussion:

House: I plan to rent initially and hopefully buy land out of Ao Nang - say 5-8km. Is such land available? Services? Cost?

Schools: These 2 girls are bright and attend a Thai Catholic College in NK. They do not need a Phuket style International School but my research comes up with nothing about schools in Krabi district. Is there a good primary/high school near Ao Nang?

Shopping: I read that a Tesco/Lotus is planned. What's the latest? Are the existing shops sufficient or does everyone really do a fortnighly run to Phuket?

Hospitals: I read that a new medical centre is planned for Ao Nang. What's the latest? Are the existing services sufficient for non life threatening illnesses?

What am I looking for? A quiet place to live but close enough to a tourist beach where I can occasionally go for a walk, a talk, a nice meal and a cold glass of wine. Regretfully, Nong Khai ain't got it. I will be very grateful for your reply.

  5. I have had several salt chlorinated pools in Australia and I now have one in Nong Khai.

It is the way to go.

There is only one problem. Sunlight "ëats" chlorine and you need to add a pool stabiliser (concentrated cyanuric acid). People who have a manual chlorine pool use chlorine with stabiliser already added. If you do not have cyanuric acid in your pool, the sun can deplete it of its chlorine in 2-3 hours!! For a pool of 50,000 litres, 2kg is sufficient. Just like you can buy a test kit for your ph and chlorine, you can also buy one for your stabiliser. But no matter how well balanced your pool chemicals are, if you do not have stabiliser then the sun will do its job.

And now I come to the big problem. I have searched Thailand and I cannot find anyone who sells pool stabiliser (concentrated cyanuric acid). If anyone out there knows of someone who does, then let me know. I am making arrangements for a friend to bring me some from Australia on his next trip.

  6. Is there anywhere in Thailand where I can buy pool stabilizer (cyanuric acid).

So far, all I have sourced is stabilised chlorine, but I don't want that as my salt chlorinator is producing sufficient chlorine but I am losing it rapidly to the sun.

    I need 100% cyanuric acid.

    Thanks

  7. I live in Nong Khai and have a fully tiled salt chlorinated pool.

I urgently need to contact a supplier for stabiliser (cyanuric acid) and algaecide.

There is no one up here. I've found one in Phuket but that's a long way away!!

    Can anyone help?

Thanks for your replies. My chlorinator is producing sufficient chlorine but the sun is gobbling it up!!

And I cannot find a supplier of stabilizer (cyanuric acid). Plenty of suppliers want to sell me 50kg of stabilised chlorine but that is not what I need. From my experience in Australia I know that cyanuric acid will fix my problem but I cannot find anyone in Thailand who sells it . 5kg will last for ages.

I have fixed the algae problem.
