  1.
BTW, AFAIK, the former V8 Diner from Suk Soi 12 is still alive, but relocated to the far end of Suk Soi 11 not far from where the Villa Market Soi 11 also relocated to in the past year, meaning, a LONG trek down Soi 11 to where the road jogs to the left.

The bad news, though, AFAICT, is that unlike the old location that was open 24 hours and/or in the early morning hours for breakfast, the new V8 Diner location appears to cater more to the local club going types, and so has hours from 12 noon until 5 am, meaning they're not open during traditional breakfast hours anymore.

  2. Most cruise lines dock at Laem Chabang port which is about 2 hours from Bangkok and close to Pattaya, although smaller ships often dock at Klong Toey on the Chao Phraya River.  Better check which one it is as it will have an impact on where she can go. I see you use the port code BKK, which is the code for the Klong Toey port if that was intentional.

She will be docking at Laem Chabang.

  3. I have a female friend docking in BKK for 2 days 1 night this month. She is in her mid fifties and doesn’t want to take the cruise line excursions. Unfortunately I will not be in country when she arrives so she will be doing the taxi route.

Any help on what you recommend for her to see would be of great help. She does enjoy a cold beer and is not into shopping.

  5. I have lived / worked in Thailand for over 12 years. Now I am on my second year of retirement & have decided to purchase a small condo. I have made wire transfers from my USA bank to my Thai bank numerous times but always under $ 5,000 each transfer. I will eventually be transferring a larger amount, more like $ 40,000 ( into baht ofcourse) Is there a limit how much I can transfer from USA to another country? Is it better to divide the full amount into 3 or 4 segments?

I don’t know if there is a limit, but the bank will report amount is 10k or more to the IRS.

  6. There was a big craze of using, I believe a Chinese method. A paper cone shape you stick in your ear and lite it on fire. It’s about 8 in. long and you let it burn down to bout 2 in. The heat and cone bring the wax out. I tried I’d once and it worked great. Also heard of some folks having their ears get worse.

Yes it take 2 people. One you trust won’t let it burn you ear.

  8. I'm planning my next high season trip and fancy spending a 4 or 5 nights in Loei. I was wondering if someone could help me with a few queries.

    1) How is it in early February? Is the burning from Chiang Mai a factor here or is there burning in the local area?
    2) Do most hotels around Loei offer a driver for the day? I'd like to explore some of the nearby national parks.

Are there ATMs in Loei town? I know this sounds like a silly question but thought I'd ask.

    Thanks

Loei Palace is the best hotel

  9. I need to rent a car in Loei next month. Checking on the net there only seems to be Avis that offer rentals and they are quite expensive. Anyone know of other rental options.

There is car rental available at Loei airport. I don't know the name and have never seen any cars . They are most likely off site.

  10. All this BS about elections and other talk is way of the topic.

Trump stepped up outreach to allies in Asia to secure their cooperation to pressure North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs.
The US already has met with Japan and S. Korea and Singapore. Now the need is to pull in 2 countries (Thailand and Philippines) that have been leaning more toward China.
There is nothing right now facing this region that is a bigger threat than what is happening in North Korea.

I believe the US is trying to line up the largest coalition possible in the region to present a united front against North Korea. I am happy to see the US trying to do this multilaterally rather than try to solve it on our own.

These vents aren't all that expensive and do a decent job. The crude ones used for outdoor grills (such as in local markets) cost very little, and sometimes operate with a makeshift reapplied fan.

Cooking smells sticking inside the house can be countered with vigorous constant cleaning of panels, but that's a chore. For fridge - we use sealed boxes for the nasty stuff, no problems. There are also these thingies, sort of like foam cube inside a plastic frame which sucks some of the bad smells (never really used these).

Guess I'm lucky though....most of what the Mrs. cooks smells great, and she usually avoids bringing out the occasional "special" when we eat together.

Also put baking soda in an open container in the frig.

  12. In the U.S  a large minority if not a majority of families can trace there origins back to another country.
My family is from England on the mothers side and French-Canadian on my fathers side.
If you know your history most of the native born Americans are from immigrant roots.
we as Americans  hate to admit it but our country was built by foreigners since the 1500's.
I know that is not popular now but it is in fact the truth.
Now that our society has  become fat, stupid, and lazy we want to forget the fact that we are all immigrants from somewhere.
Fear is what breeds irrationality, and now Americans are afraid.
that is why we have Trump as president, irrational fear.
That is my opinion, whether you like it or not.

Immigration to the US was out of need for both the US and immigrant. There were jobs to be filed, land to be settled and so on. Different times

  13. I occasionally enjoy street food from certain vendors. You do need to have the stomach for it. Most friends that visit me will experience some of the runs. It does take some time.

As far as tourists go, not so sure they care other than a few pics. In fact if they are part of a tour group from the west they are told best to avoid it. Better than risking getting sick on your holiday.
