Maybe brake failure. The road does not look very wide to justify fast driving - whatever the drivers nationality is or if there was another vehicle coming from the wrong side.

Looks a narrow country road...Driver fault should be suspect.

    RIP to the lady.

I step in here to defend the driver even tho' we don't have the full story.... You may or may not know that to obtain a German DL , it takes one year of learning/practice. One can assume (only) that some vehicle in the oposite lane forced him off the road. Could've been that he was driving a bit too fast. P.S. - I'm not a German national.

  2. I think it's possibly due to this. Yes he has 125 rai. Mike has 64 rai. All Mike's trees have been open for a few years now growing in production every year.

Scott has many trees still not open ,so making nothing but paying pui and grass cutting expenses. Also Scott has many trees only just open or in maybe 2nd year of tapping. So very little production yet,but still paying pui also.

Just my shitty opinion, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

    Cheers cobbler

Not really cobbler..... we staggered our planting over a 7 year period. The last "opening" was 2 years ago, then 3 yrs ago, and so on... The biggest downfalls for us in the upper north are the tapping season period. Had a lot of rain and a long leaf-less season. Total tapping period was 3.5 months (if that!). The 50K baht is in-hand money total. My friend, Krisada Boonrach is the present Secretary of Agriculture... Yes, I know (and he knows!!!) that he has no agriculture experience so.... with that in mind, plus this pacman "government", I can't see a silver lining in the cloud. Unfortunately, there is no good solution to these record low rubber prices. He did try to get some sort of pact going with 5 other rubber producing countries but that has since, been quiet or shelved. Oh.... and plus the fact that the buyers in town(s) have colluded with each other as to the very low prices. Lowest seen was 10 or 11 baht.

  3. Just opened one of our two plantations yesterday. The other one opens next week. 2-3 weeks earlier than the last few years.
We open our final one this year after the leaves come back out. 14 rai but still the <deleted> low prices in Fang, Mar Ai, & Chai Prakarn districts. Selling the whole lot of plantations (still!!!!) 125 rai. Made 50,000 baht profit last year on 100 + rai. Disgusted.

  4. Interesting! Must be the hot climate. Wait! It probablty is.

Do you think the biogas contraption that I showed (modified to suit the Thai market in whatever ways it can) could simplify the process enough to make it appealing (with the free gas and the free compost)? True! Gas bottles last forever in my experience and they are dirt cheap at 400 B. True! Composting is done by burning. Sort of. How about a governmental program in schools to evaluate 15 anti-pollution video ads by parents and children as a soft manner to educate them on the consequences of their action! Surely, they are not going to continue burning their fields if they know that they are causing harm to their children AND them, as the videos would persuade incontrovertibly. It has to be done smartly. This is one of the smart ways that was done in some areas where smoking use was generalized and in 30 years it has been  virtually "eradicated". Big changes like these don't happen overnight, but demand clever persuasion techniques and incentives, along with peer pressure and losing face pressures. Children will remind their parents everyday that they are stupid and uncaring. Your thoughts?

We had a small pig farm and had the Agri people come in and build an underground Biogas collector. The volume was approx 2 tons and worked well. The pig manure was (of course) used as fertilizer. The cost was around 20K baht.

I generally agree with you, change is possible, however for a long process to be completed it has to start first, and things haven't even started to move to that direction in Thailand. So, 30 years from now, perhaps.

Agreed. Let's put anotherspanner in the works and talk about the chemical salespeople that say(and I've actually heard this said), "With these products, we can enhance the burnt ash to double the effect of your output" ..... <deleted>Sakes!

  6. I think there is no other way than to burn, slash and burn, how else to do it?
I taught the village how to make compost. Many did it for a while and were in general, pleased with the outcome BUT after a few years, the "lazy factor" kicked in again and it was back to burning and chemical fertilizers.

  7. Though the Unhealthy bar has been raised (again) most schools have "indoors sport day" on days like these.... I was watching the Thai news the other day .... Chiang Mai was worse than Bangkok except for Din Daeng roadside BUT Chiang Mai was not mentioned. Many expats that have been here a while know of news blackouts for one event or another and the message "someone" might be trying to get across to Joe Public.

  8. Just flew in yesterday. On the plane about 5 minutes before landing in daylight a large agricultural burn could be seen.
    Huge smoke, open flames.

One would figure the Army would go arrest the burners.
If you look on the west side of Route 107, often enough, you see the boys in green doing large burnoffs annually. No doubt this year will be in the tradition.

  9. I drive in to Chiang Mai every morning from the south. From about Thai Watsadu on the superhighway, the pollution becomes noticeable. South of there there is very little.
Today, I was stuck in stop start traffic from Central Festival to Thapae Gate.
I'm blaming the current pollution on the cooler air and heavier traffic combination.
There's a lot of (small) local burning going on. Folks preparing land for farming and sales.

  10. Just rule in drastic visa regulations for the Chinese, before arrival, and problem solved overnight.
I believe that strict rules apply for Chinese driving down from the homeland. The Chiang Rai administration deemed that incoming Chinese drivers had to: 1. Sit in 2 days of driving classes 2. Take a test 3. Take out driving insurance 4. Stay within Chiang Rai province.

Don't know if it is still in effect...
