  1. I have been to Chonlada on soi Siam CC for lunch twice this week and while I do enjoy the place, there's a crying baby there full time. Probably a relative of the owner. It's a real noise maker and I've had to leave sooner than expected after a stressful meal.

  2. On the advice of the board, I've gone to Happy Holidays on Nern Plub Wan (corner soi 9--look for green sign). Thai operated but clearly farang owned in the service/decor. I've tried a few dishes (and they provide a nice 10% discount card) but the standout so far was the squid in salted egg. Never have I tasted this dish so well prepared and I eat it often. I also tried the Pad Si Yew which was very nice and plentiful (sorry about the spelling--lol).

Again on the advice of the board, I made it up to Sure Park to have the sirloin steak. Prepared to perfection and the serene ambiance made it a place I will surely return to. It's a little tricky to find this hidden away resto but don't let that put you off. Well worth the hunt.

    Bon appetit!

  3. I'm a new transplant to the darkside and I'm trying for the life of me to remember the connecting sois between the 4 main roads. I know there's the soi that Dao restaurant is on to get from (excuse my spelling) Nern Plub Wan to Kao Talo and then there's the one I use from soi Siam to Nern Plub which I think is called Lablae road. So if anything, I would like to know all the connecting sois without having to go down to the tracks in defeat.

Then I get up to the temple areas and I'm completely lost whether it be day or night. The roads aren't straight and this is why I get confused. I'm so used to driving on the brightside where everything's pretty cut and dried including soi Buakow.

Welcome to the Farside MFTHAI. I know how you feel...the roads over here do take some time to get to know. However, once you become familiar with the main routes (and the many short-cuts) you will get around just fine. The main way to learn is to just drive around (preferably during the day :D ).

    Good luck!

Let's just say I'm keeping the oil companies in business... :o

    Thanks brothers.

  5. Thank you for your replies. I have driven down the streets of many townhouses and many appear very old from the outside. Also, there's one family so close to another that it must feel like you're living together. To be honest, I am happy living in Thai but I don't want the Thais too close to me nor do I wish to be dependent on Thais for repairs/maintenance. I simply don't trust nor have faith in them to service my home as needed.

The only problem with the "house" rental is the utilities can eat you alive but on the other hand I cannot see a Studio Condo on the darkside as being viable. If you are going to get a studio then why not something in town, closer to the action?

That's it. I don't really see the point of a large home for a single anyway. We'll see how it goes. :o

  7. I've been offered a brand new never occupied studio condo with kitchen on the darkside (east of sukhumvit) by a farang mate who is in construction for 7k/month + utilities. I've never lived on the darkside and have been reliably informed there are entire houses for near this amount with 2 beds/2 baths! I was astounded. As I'm single, I don't require much space but I also like to know my options so I've turned to you.

I feel having a responsible hands-on farang landlord as my neighbor is invaluable as everywhere I've ever lived under Thai management, something happens where the Thai management is indifferent and/or AWOL when needed.

    Any thoughts please?
