  1. Thanks for the replies. Just found a local bamboo slat cage for 350 baht on Hang Dong Road about a km south of the Samoeng Rd intersection.

We have also used teak in the past for making a swing at our house. That was a fun project. And quality wood. But the rabbit only gets bamboo. ????

  2. Hi all,

I'm looking to build a cheap rabbit hutch (i.e. 1000 baht+) and have found some designs online that i'd like to take to a local bamboo carpenter/builder. Or maybe some other type of cheap wood like pine..?

Any ideas where I can find someone like this?

  3. If you can source product from the US, then you can get a bottle of 100+ at 5mg for about $5 usd from Walmart. But locally Lazada is your best bet. Many people find a 3mg to be a good starting point. My mom only takes 1mg. I take 5mg.

  4. Hey all,

I live up North in Chiang Mai and am planning to drive down to Samui for a week or so in late July. But confused about the pier at which to catch a car ferry and what the times are.

Any recommendations here? We will be driving from Bangkok that day so hoping I can catch a car ferry before dark. But could use some pointers as Google is directing me to a bunch of dead links and passenger ferry sites.

    Thanks!

  5. So how did this all work out?

I'm looking too buy a Yaris from an owner who ha s please through Toyota Finance. The owner says we should both go to the finances office and that I can pay the finance company directly. They thought the blue book might take a month to be changed/processed and then mailed to my home address.

Does tis sound right? If I pay and don't get the blue book, what DO I get? Just a receipt? A temp ownership document of some sort?

I can play all titles with the Fire TV stick, in HD quality, by connecting it to my US VPN wifi router. My Android TV box can play it too by Amazon Video Prime app (thru US VPN), but limited to SD quality only.

I have a new Fire TV Stick connected to a US Prime account but cannot actually play any titles. Using without a VPN I do see a section titles "Watch while abroad", but these don't want to play. They give me a geo-location error.

Trying to get connected to a VPN to I could get full access, I followed instructions online for installing the IPVanish VPN app into the Fire Stick and paying for a VPN account. Yet still cannot play any Prime content whatsoever.

How have the rest of you using a Firestick + US Prime + VPN manage to get this setup working?

  7. Hi all,

I've bought a few cars over the years here in Thailand, including a 2006 Toyota Yaris & 2008 Honda Jazz. When I bought them (both used) I got them with low miles and paid around 450,000 THB each. Now I find myself needing a daily car, yet with a bit less $$$ to spend.

What would you recommend I go for having just 330,000 THB ($10,000 USD)?

Should I look for something older but mid-sized (ie. 2010 Corolla - older but still quality and 1.6 engine), a 2010-2012 City or Vios with manual transmission (manual tran saves $ now -  but can I resell a manual transmission easily after a few years?) or a 2012-13 Ford Fiesta with low miles (yet with potential transmission issues) or a newish small and questionable model that is cheaper and newer (2015 Chevy Cruze, Proton, etc).

My gut says to stick with Toyota or Honda even if it means an older model with more miles. What do the rest of you suggest?

  8. There are quite a few good shops to get decent bikes at, starting at about 9000 THB for an entry level mountain bike. Open Google maps and search for bicycle shops. Just found a few new shops that way myself.

As for me, I bought a few Treks at Jacky Bike a while back and was happy with them. Now I'm searching for an entry level (but still "real") hardtail for my son and am considering a Kaze brand bike (Thai company) that uses their own frame with quality sourced components (Shimano, Suntrek, etc) that starts at 9900 THB and Trek, whose Marlin 6 is on sale now for less than 13,000 THB over at Jacky's.

On the lower end is also TrinX, a lower "almost-real" Chinese company that had some good components (Shimano derailleur) mixed with brakes and crankcase I've never heard of. That sells for about 6000 THB.

At the top end, there are plenty of full suspension bikes which can be ordered in large frame sizes, but prices can be higher than you like.

  9. Hi, I am about to permanently leave Thailand, as I will heading to the US for work. Soon I will sell my car and a few household things, and will need to find a trustworthy way to transfer 500,000 baht back to the US.

What are my options? And what is best? Bank transfer? Deposit the cash to my local BangkokBank account and use debit card to withdraw once in America?

Are there any other ways? Suggestions?

    Thanks.

  10. I made it to this place and found some great supplies. All boxes are double walled and cost between 30-50 baht. Very high quality. Also, they sell packing tape, bubble wrap (20 baht per square meter), Styrofoam and more. That's for the tip MrBrad.

  11. In my experience, Siam TV is the best place to buy air-conditioners in Chiang Mai. They all come with free installation, however, the install waiting list might be few weeks long now that you've waited to the hot season.

Also, I 100% agree that oversizing is bad. It leads to humid-feeling rooms and greater temp variation... which means you feel cool, then a bit too warm, then cool, them warm... especially when under a blanket or thick comforter.

It appears to be that every air-con salesman is out to upsize customers to buy larger units. They will ALWAYS ask you how big your room is and recommend a higher BTU device. So underestimate your BTU usage by a bit to keep your room cool and maximize efficiency.

Grossly underestimating BTU needs is crazy - like a friend of mine who wanted to put a 9k BTU in his large living room. The installer refused to do it, and recommended a 30k+. In the end, my friend came around to his senses and bought a 24k BTU. A good choice for his room, neither too small nor quite what the air con shop recommended.

Oversizing is a bad idea for a variety of reasons. I will just post a few of the many links that explain it. Due to short cycling, humidity removal is reduced, energy costs go up, uneven cooling - that is from hot to cold to hot. Here is a quote from one of them.

    There are three reasons:

First is that an air conditioner is most efficient the longer it runs. If it is too big, it will run for a couple of minutes at a shot, whereas, if it is the right size, it will run much longer – on the hottest afternoons of the year, it should run all the time. This delivers the cold air at the lowest cost and more evenly.

The second is that the air conditioner is also a dehumidifier. Here on the West Coast we spend about 20% of our air conditioning money on taking moisture out of the air. If the unit is too big and spends more time off than on, the coils won’t get cold enough for a long enough period of time to condense enough moisture to be effective in removing moisture from the air.

The third problem with oversizing the air conditioner is that if you buy too big a unit, you are simply wasting money. A properly sized unit has a fudge factor built-in, so that once a proper heat loss/gain calculation has been done, buying a larger unit than called for is unnecessary.

  12. I'm looking for NEW heavy duty cardboard boxes to ship items to a few countries. FedEx and DHL have strong boxes, but only give out one at a time. Besides, I'm not sure how I'll ship yet.

Ideally, I'd like to find a box seller/distributor that'll let me but 10 or so strong double-walled boxes.

    Any ideas?

  13. Just bought a bicycle.

Found a second hand bike shop in MaeJo, near the BeLive traffic lights and the petrol station.

(On the main 1001 to MaeJo, hang a U-ey at the Belive traffic lights, past the petrol stn, 100m on the left)

Lots of 2nd hand bikes, Giant, Merida, Schwinn, etc., 5,000-9,000bht.

Frame sizes limited as usual, biggest one was 19".

    Advertises as 'notimephone' on OLX.

You can handle the bikes, sit on them, take them for a test ride, no problems, nice guy, ZERO English.

For those who need directions, the Mae Jo used bike store is located at: N 18° 52.367' E 099° 00.944'

Or view it on Google maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=18.87278472,99.01572542

  14. I went to Chaitawat the other day, and it seemed like a great shop. Great selection of Treks, prices posted (finally, a shop that makes shopping easy), and plenty of staff.

However, all the bikes were chained up and hard to access. So I asked an elderly man (maybe the owner) if I could see one model, with large 29 tires.

He asked me, "Will you buy it today?"

I explained to him that I am actually searching for two bikes, for both me and my wife. But I simply want to sit on the 29er to see how it feels. I didn't plan to buy today, because I want to bring my wife back.

His answer? No. I can't sit on, or touch, the bike I'm interested in.

Then he goes on to tell me that if I bring money back and am ready to buy that day, they will unlock the bikes and sell me one that fits me.

After a few minutes of reasoning - in Thai and English - he still refused to listen or even pull the bike out of the rack out so I could see it up close. He was harsh and seemed annoyed that I was even there.

For real?!? I wasn't treated this poorly at any other bike shop in town.

I headed over to Jacky Bike later in the day and a fluent English speaker came up to me, answered my question, told me the price (exactly the same as at Chaitawat) and even allowed me to sit on the bike... Giving advice about my body size, seat height, and whether they had the right frame size in stock for my wife too.

Complete opposite attitudes at both stores. I will likely never go back to Chaitawat... but their selection is great. :-)

  15. Nice shop!

Do you happen to have GPS coordinated for it?

    If u know only one bike shop in Chiang Mai u can effectively write " a great bicycle shop;

I remember, a few months ago, The shop is in front of Same_Same GH , I need somebody can check my bike wireless computer ; it was not possible because the workers were not there and the owner of the shop who is a woman don't know anything about a bicycle...

    there are many bike shops in Chiang Mai;

    I remember coming from Doi_Suthep, on the large road which name is Huaykaew ( rd n* 1004 ) on the right side when coming from Doi_Suthep, I think not far from Central Departement Store; there is also a bike shop;

For me, it's a subjective answer, the biggest shop and the best one is not in Chiang Mai but in Pa_Sang - Lamphun Province,

it's not far from Chiang Mai; u can go there with ur bicycle and comme back easily in the same day .

Rd 106 going to Saraphi - Lamphun - Pa_Sang ; about 40 km from central Chiang Mai .

  16. These days, there are fewer places to play, and most are somewhat outside of the city.

The Fox BB Gun (http://www.thefoxbbgun.com) is one of the best. They rent guns, vests, masks, etc. Call or Facebook them for their package price which includes bullets. Should cost around 350THB.

Also, on the Mae Rim Road just South of Nakornping Hospital there is a great airsoft field. They have about 10 guns for rent. Field fee is 50 THB, rental is 100 THB, etc.

And apparently, there are a few more, though they seem to move around every few years...

If you have more questions let me know.
