So far as I know, if you don't need a 30 days extension (1.900), you just have to cross the board to activate the 2nd visa for further 60 days.
-
Without having to read all the pages, can anyone tell me if the "free" period ends on the last day of March, or earlier?
Thanks.
March 4th.
Still on March 4th? Or they have extended the date?
Thanks in advance for the info.
-
I saw sometime before the TV in Vientiane was free of charge until March 2010.
Now, on the welovesundaysats post above I read: 4 - Currently (until Jan 2010) the Thailand tourist visa in Vientiane is free of charge.
Can someone tell exactly the final free of charge date?
Many thanks

rroland: if you are in Bangkok, take your Laptop to Dtac office and Hutch, and test them out. Say that you want to test speed before you buy.
Dtac promise you "much more speed" but 3 G are not here yet! Read post from Monty. They have been saying for years "3G coming soon". Well we're still waiting, my guess 1-5 year more. Dtac promise "future speed". Dont belive advertising. lol.
Slow = GPRS (aircard or your mobile) (my speedtests shows +- 150kbps).
Faster = EV-DO (usb dongle) CAT and HUTCH. (my speedtest show +- 800kbps).
Faster = 3 G NOT YET HERE (but they promised that for years - Very limited area near BTS).
With CAT/HUTCH EV-DO you per today must choose: Coverage Bkk - Pattaya OR up country. When out our their area, you might still connect but speed same Gprs only.
For coverage all around Thailand - slow aircard/mobile only.
"Also I'm still not sure if there is a way to use the 1st (Hutch EV-DO) without hutch permission."
It's locked to Hutch, Same Cat only work in Cat network. Why your need to use another sim?
That not possible with Cat/Hutch (just checked).
I think you look for a option that do not excist until 3G have full cover.
Can you spesify your needs more spesific?
Max2000 ...
First of all thanks to take your time to light me up.
I'm travel frequently to the North where there's no Hutch coverage, that's why I mentioned DTAC.
And yes, I've to use the Edge GPRS of my phones which are really slow (nokia 3110 or 5310 express)
My question of this started thread was if the DTAC Aircard or another aircard could improve the connection's speed until "that" 3G is coming.
-
rroland: yes its attached for 6-18 months, prices 5-16.000 thb depend on contract time. Google hutch huawei evdo ec226 and you find it. Think you can not use another SIM.
I did Max (I mean googled) but can't see the difference between the 2 Huawei models: EV-DO ec226 (by hutch) and E 1553 (by DTAC).
Also I'm still not sure if there is a way to use the 1st without hutch permission.
Anyway I'll keep an eye on this topic waiting for more inputs.
-
rroland: have read report that Hutch sell Huawei ev-do ec226 with speed 4-5 times faster than a mobile. Coverage area Bangkok to Pattaya. Do some search in this forum and you find it. Not shure if they have merged with Cat just recently, seen some advertisement. If the later is correct, then they might have more coverage around Thailand.
Thanks Max
Is that aircard (Huawei ev-do ec226) "attached" to Hutch or can be usedd with another SIM (like DTAC for instance)?
-
You sure they compare with a mobile phone used as a modem, or a modem (dial-up) hooked up to a phone line?
Because when comparing with the latter GPRS/EDGE is about 3 times faster on average (120 kbps versus 40 to 50 kbps for dial-up).
3G should be at least 8 times faster then GPRS/EDGE...
Yes Monty, they had compared with a nokia 3110 and 5310 ...
-
The Dtac aircard is a Huawei E1553 3G modem.
If and when 3G will become available, it will be much faster then the current Edge/GPRS they are currently using.
As at the moment there is no 3G coverage yet save for a few test area's, speeds will be the same as you'd get with an Edge capable phone used as a modem...
As usual it's entirely in Thai, so no idea when they'll have 3G or where it'll be...
That's what I thought Monty but yesterday I was at a DTAC shop and they guarantee a significant speed difference between them, even they said 3 times faster then a regular modem ...
-
I was told the DTAC aircard offers much more speed then the regular phones connected to internet (via PC or laptop).
Does anyone bought to let us know if there are significant differences?
If yes I think is useful for those who travel with the laptop all over Thailand.
The coast at DTAC shops is 2.700 baht (see below)
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

does ur motherboard support 800mhz ddr2?
Sorry I'm a newbie
How can I check about it?
(2.7GHz, 512KB L2 Cache, 2000 MHz Bus)
ok after doing some search ur motherboard does support 800mhz rams.
you could just get some kingston DDR2 800mhz Valuerams
Memory • Four 240-pin DDR2 800/667/533/400 MHz SDRAM slots
• Support up to 4 GB system memory
Thanks all for your responses.
On that website there are 2 Kingstons with 800MHz
-One is CL4 (2.520 baht) and the other, CL5 (2.780 baht)
Which one I should choose?

My PC has 1GB (896) of RAM and want to upgrade to 4GB.
Does someone know the current prices? Brands?
Thanks in advance.
You can compare prices here > thanni.com. The link points to DDR2 memory since you don't mention your mainboard. I use Corsair myself but Kingston is a good choice.
BTW-unless you are running a 64-bit OS, the system will only see ~3GB of memory.
Thanks for the responses.
The main board is eMachines ET1300 (EMCP61PM-GM) and has a AMD Athlon Processor (LER-1640 2700 MHz) with 1024 MB DDR 2 (in fact I see only 896 MB) and I want to upgrade to 4GB.
After having checked that site I don't really know which one to choose:
- Kingston Hyper X Series 240 pin 4GB (2x2GB) DDR 2 1066 CL5 RAM (2.480 baht)
- ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, DDR 2 800 CL4 ,, (2.520 ,, )
- ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, DDR 2 800 CL5 ,, (2.780 ,, )
Can you please help me?
Thank you.

You get the form at the Embassy in Vientiane. Don't download anything, there will be plenty of forms there.
Don't bother with the touts either, just go in, punch the button for a number and start working on your form. If you don't get a number right away you will be waiting forever. Under your photos there is a space to write in how many entries you want. Put a two in the form.
Upstairs there will be a Thai Embassy guy running the copy machine. 15 baht gets you a copy of your main passport page, your Laos visa, and most recent Thai visa. That's all you need.
Don't forget your photos, or you will have to have them done outside.
When your number is called pass the paperwork into the window. The woman inside actually stamped my number and told me that I didn't have to go to the counter and pay, since it was a free tourist visa.
I would suggest getting there at around 1:30 the next day. You will not receive a number this time, use the one from yesterday. If you lose the ticket just remember the number. I got there at 12:45 and had to wait in line until about 1:30, by the time I got outside with my passport, the line was gone.
As of 28 July, double entry tourist visas are free in Vientiane. Everyone in line got one. No one was denied for tourist visa. Good luck!
Thank you Skettios
In fact I "made" Vientiane 4 times and I know how it works but I have the "bad habit" to do the papers work (Laos Visa in Bangkok, fill the form application, copies as you said above, etc.) before I travel.
With "this" new form I'm not sure if they accept the older one; that's why I had asked if I could download it from somewhere.
Cheers!
Roland

got me visa today,
the forms i downloaded were wrong,
the "new"forms HAD a section for how many entries.
i put '2"IN IT AND GOT A DOUBLE ENTRY
Can you (or someone) be more specific about that? I mean the new forms.
Thank you.
They have printed new form, which it has the type of visa and the number of entries desired on right top of the form.
Bishop
And where can I download this new form?
At Vientiane Consulate website still is the older ...

I am using the DLink 2640T on TRUE and no problems - also the same 512 service.
Thanks a lot for your responses.
Regarding the DLINK 2640T, I can’t see on the specs the 802.11n …
Do I need a modem/router with "n" to perform the 901 capacities?
-
I want to buy an ADSL Modem Router that has a 4 ports and a wireless point.
I plan to have my normal PC connected via lan cable and my eee PC 901 connected via wireless.
True Co. had installed the high-speed Internet (512 kb) package with a modem billion sky.
As the line is often dropping down I'm thinking to buy a different modem router.
My question is:
As the eee 901 has 802.n draft is it recommended to buy a modem router with the "n" spec?
I'm undecided with the following models:
Linksys GWRT160N Ultra N
Linksys WRT 310N
Belkin N + wireless router
D-Link WAG 160 N
Which modem/router would you recommend? One of those or another model?
Thanks in advance for your advices

Is there 11n on Asus WL500GP V2? According to this specification sheet there is only b/g. http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/asus-wl-50...7-33035775.html
If you use an usb-harddisk on permanent basis with the router, the filesystem does not really matter. The files will be served with Samba or NFS to the network anyway. Then the internal filesystem could be NTFS or ext3.
I would not buy linksys adsl-router. I had one before and NAT on the box was not done correctly. The router allowed just one VoIP/SIP registration. I had a talk with the linksys engineers, but they were not interested to fix the problem (and create new firmware version).

Thanks Gents for your replies.
Pekka ... your information is very useful in all means.
In the shop' catalogue they advert the modem having the function 802.11n but after looking at the websites they don't mention the "n" specification.
Either they write 125mbps but on the reviews I see only 54 mbps !!!
I've to check it out (I don't know how ) before I buy it.

I have a normal Router Modem – Billion Sky (1 port Ethernet) furnished with the True hi-speed ADSL internet package.
Can't complain as works okay besides the line drops down sometimes…
As I also want to connect my netbook Asus eee PC 901 (with the new Ethernet WLAN communication technology 802.11n) I was prepared to buy a Linksys Modem (WAG54G2) which is more stable though and has 4 ports.
But … having a look at Asus software I saw the Wireless Router multi-function 802.11n, 125mgps, Access point + Router 1 WAN port + 2 USB ports (WL-500gP V2), which makes me very undecided about my choice (the price of both are similar).
I'm really newbie to all "this" stuff and I'm asking your advice, regarding above all the PC or/and netbook speed.
Many thanks in advance
