  1. Ordering supplements from abroad will get you a better price and a wider variety to choose from. Yet delivery will take longer and there might be issues with customs/clearing, shipping, etc.

    Some options within Thailand:
    - Vitamins https://www.blackmores.co.th and pharmacies, Boots, Watsons, etc

    - Electrolytes, energy bars, gels, drink mix,... (running/cycling/hiking/etc) http://www.vitalthai.com
    - Sports supplements more oriented towards gym/bodybuilding http://www.thaisupplements.com/ , & http://www.nutritiondepot.co.th

    - Detox, superfoods, nut, seeds, dried fruits, etc http://healthfoodthailand.com/

  2. Can also source online...
    - Electrolytes, energy bars & sports supplements (running/cycling/hiking/etc) http://www.vitalthai.com (Free shipping within Thailand)
    - Sports supplements more oriented towards gym/bodybuilding http://www.thaisupplements.com/

    - Detox, superfoods, nut, seeds, dried fruits, etc http://healthfoodthailand.com/

    - Various https://th.iherb.com (note: this is import, so might have customs issues)

  3. As others have suggested, I'd first look into mattress/hydration/exercise/diet/electrolytes/etc before resorting to Big Pharma's chemicals i.e. 'medicine'. If you do it right, your food IS your medicine. Yet the food industry doesn't care about your health, and the health industry doesn't care about your food. Great strategy as that makes them big $$$, but we're paying for it. Literally and figuratively.

  4. Try to source your products in Thailand to avoid these issues. For example electrolytes, sports supplements, etc are available at http://vitalthai.com with free shipping. DHL is a bit of a headache and iherb has had problems with them (so have I). If you need anything in the sports niche, let me know as I'm quite familiar with that... maybe can refer. Also anything vegan/vegetarian/general health oriented. http://healthfoodthailand.com for example is another great online store for nuts, seeds, superfoods, detox, organic, etc.

  5. Thanks, silva. Very helpful comments. I've been told 2 or 3 years depends on soil quality; so it would be a 2y with an option on a 3rd year.

I think as canada has said they will want at least three years. I have been buying land for the last three years , Nobody will sell untill they have had that third crop harvested . Then it needs the old out new planted which means extra expence of plants tractor for that year.

Hope this helps , I have tried this year to rent land but couldn't get one rai wanted as much as two hundred rai .Alas that little plan was shelved ,I managed to buy thirty rai with a deal to buy another forty of the same guy at the end of his third crop early next year but renting just wasn't happening ,still looking though

We've got 27 rai farming land up for sale in Roi-Et. That's the one I plan to rent out now for sugar, as I go crazy from all these Thai calling and saying that for sure they will buy it and eventually they don't even bother to come to see it. Or they come up with some kind of scam where they say they have set up a fund that will buy the land and cheaply rent out to poor farmers.... two weeks later they call to say we have to wait a little for the money, but ion the mean time they can sell us 'black gold' from Laos that we could resell to N-Korea at a huge profit. OMG.

We want to sell (or rent out) the 27 rai, as we recently bought a house 140km away and so it will be difficult to monitor/manage it ourselves. Should anybody be interested to buy or rent, send me a private message.

  6. Where I live, in the heart of Isaan, everybody seems to be getting into sugar cane lately. Why? The sugar price is on a downward path. Is ethanol in play? Does the Thai government subsidize sugar?

We're being offered 2500 baht per rai (per year) to rent out our land for sugar. Minimum 2 years and they would pay everything up-front. And apparently without putting things on paper. If we can offer them other land, we would get 100 baht per rai commission. What's up?

  7. As I said gold is off it's highs. I had 100% gold stocks 3 years again and now I have none, I made great money on the runup and lost a small portion on the slide before exiting. I never suggested buying gold stocks at this point and if the bullion price goes down of course the stocks will get decimated further (they already have been).

I agree it's the currency that fluctuates but it's difficult to pay at Tesco or the bar in bullion?

Do you pay at Tesco with stocks, bonds or ETFs?

  8. Everybody makes money when the markets are going up. Don't tell me about returns since August 2011, tell me about returns since August 2007. The Thai economy is booming, while the trade balance is worsening. Yes, Thailand is in a sweet spot for at least the next 10 years. No, this rally in Thai stocks is not sustainable. It's not a time to buy Thai stocks, it's a time to take some profits and park them - for example - in gold.

If as you say Thailand is in a "sweet spot" or bull market run for at least the next 10 years then shouldn't they be buying into the market. I always like the idea of taking profits off the table though and leaving the principal in - you never get burned that way and you only lose potential increases. I'll pass on that gold until it goes considerably lower, as with the SET gold is very expensive even if it is off it's highs. Gold stocks on the other hand have been hammered for the last 2 1/2 years inspite of high bullion prices.

Sweet spot in terms of economy. Stock market and economy are two different things. Thai gold price is the lowest since July 2011. If you wonder why gold stocks are not performing: the profit margins just aren't there. Their costs have gone up way faster than the gold price. Plus new taxes/royaltys, new regulations, etc. If you think gold will go down (more), than the last thing you should buy are gold stocks - they will get slaughtered. BTW: in sterling and yen gold prices are at new highs. Gold doesn't go up or down - it's the currency that gains/keeps or loses purchasing power. Throughout history it has been the latter.

  10. Coronadian...

I agree with a lot of things johndpoole posted. Read his posts again. Besides that, I think there is a fair chance that you got a 'good' girl - but it's difficult to judge really.

Anyway, whatever you do... get the book "Thailand Fever - a road map for Thai-Western relationships". It is both in Thai and English [maybe send her a copy too]. Good insight in the culture/society differences and how to handle them.

Oh... and I think many forum members should get this book [or a similar one] too, because they really don't understand much about Thai society...

  11. Chanote: yes. Seen all papers from the banks about the debt: yes. Seen the guy of one of the banks knocking on the door & neighbours gossiping about the situation: yes. An official letter about repossessing the house if the debt is not paid: no, not yet – but the bank says they will do if at least the interest is not repaid by the end of the month. The land would be officially transferred to my girl (as it cannot be on my name) at the same time the money changes hands. My girl had a car seat shop in the past, so she has some business experience.

Road to the land is al little bumpy and on some places somewhat sandy, but good and wide enough for a tractor or small truck. We went there with the motorbike. It doesn’t cross any other lands.

Lickey, the river is well below the land – only in the rainy season I guess there’s a chance that the water gets as high as the land… so if you want to use the water you will have to pump it up or wait for it to flood (and/or capture it in a pond) and close off with sand bags or something like that when you have enough. Her dad has no money whatsoever to do any investment for things like that.

Soundman, we’re not married (yet)… but are together almost 2 years. I am young (30), but have the luxury to do my work from basically anywhere in the world – as long as I have my laptop and an internet connection. Right now, for example, I am in Thailand since the end of April and will go back to my home country for a couple of months by the end of December.

Interesting comment about the eucalyptus, soundman. They planted it 13 years ago and her parents tell me they only get about 30 000 from it every 2 or 3 years. So I guess they are not taking good care of it and most possibly just don’t know how to do (and have no money to hire people to do it right and no power to do it themselves)... I’ve heard the same stories about rubber from the neighbour. I haven’t read about eucalyptus yet… do you think after 13 years you can still start to do it right or is it too late?

Soundman: about the 30y lease… very interesting. 300baht per year for 20.5 rai – that’s a normal price? I would like something like that, as it gives me some kind of backing… I am not 100% comfortable that I can’t put the land on my name.

  12. my girl's dad has debt and the bank threatens to take the house. he has quite some land though. problem is that he waited way too long to make a decision. his other children can't come up with the money to help and selling the smaller one of his two lands at a good price is extremely difficult within 10 days. he was looking for 500-700K, but that seems impossible. even finding a buyer at 300-400K in such short notice isn't easy. so... he says if we buy it for 210K he will let it go, so it stays in the family.

location: 2km out of a small village @ roied-isan. currently half is eucalyptus and half is rice. apart from 1 rai, the rice didn't work this season because apparently there wasn't enough rain (?). i walked the land and i don't see the problem. part of it is bordered by a river, so one would think you just need to do some water management. some years the river comes very high and the land is flooded. but that's because there seems to be some man-made steep 1m 'road' down to the river, which can easily be closed. you could even use the river to your advantage and make a 1 rai pond next to the road to collect the water when the river comes high and then close off the inflow when you have enough (?). the soil is said to be excellent. I see a lot of weeds, so it's not dead for sure :o

    looks like a steal?

any other input is welcome too... for example i've been told you can't make much money from eucalyptus (?)... any idea what it would cost to cut the 10 rai eucalyptus ? i guess you could cut it and put rubber in between and wait 7 years for your rubber... but what if you want to make it farmland for rice or anything like that?
