  1. My family & I will be coming over to Bangkok soon. We are planning to rent a car & drive out to Ayutthaya follow by Kanchanaburi (3-4 days) before returning to Bangkok City (3-4 days) to be covered by BTS, MRT & Taxi.

    Some info:-

Travelling members - My mum (60s) + wife & me

    Travelling duration - 7 to 8 days

Relying on Google Map on tablet

    Using 1 week prepaid SIM

Budget for hotel per night (triple room/family room preferred) 2000-3000 baht

Places which we want to cover & need advice on:-

    Ayutthaya UNESCO site

    Kanchanaburi Railway Bridge

    Kanchanaburi Tiger Temple

    Maeklong Railway Market

Looking to spend 3-4 days on the above places & it's vicinity.

Have yet to reserve the rental car but looking at AVIS at the moment.

For Ayutthaya, is there a need to spend a night there?

    If needed, any hotel recommendation?

For Kanchanaburi, is 2 night stay sufficient?

Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

  2. I also have a CAT cdma aircard that plugs into my USB. I bought it in Phuket and it works fine here in Chiang Mai also

cdma & gsm is different right? we can't use a gsm sim card on the type of cdma aircard that you are using right? hmm so I have to get a cdma sim card?

  3. CAT has a CDMA EVDO option -- plugs in to the USB port. I use mine only in CM, and believe it will NOT work everywhere in Thailand, due to some proprietary issues.

CAT is a brand? Thai sim card are CDMA? I'm using a true top up card right now have yet to subscribe to their gprs function yet...

  4. I have a FOX EDGE Wireless modem that I bought here in Thailand at a book shop Model Fox Edge 700 It takes a sim card and works rather well anywhere in Thailand I use an AIS sim card as I remember I paid around 1500 baht

thanks for the recommendation, will go get one thx...

    regards,

    chzin

  5. Any telco company offering this? Internet on the go? A wireless modem plug in via usb & one can access to the internet via the laptop anywhere in thailand? Or something similar? I'm not sure if anyone can understand this but in Singapore we have a usb adaptor with a sim card in it & we can access to the internet when we plug that small unit into our laptop

  6. 4 hrs more like it. lots and lots of bends.

You will need to stop for a dirnk and 15 mins rest.

Pie Shop & Hot Springs Rest Area Ok

Lots of Hassel from hawkers in Taichilek. Shops in Mai sai better

You pay your 500 Bhat so go and have a look

I have stayed at the Large Hotel down the soi to the right of the Thai Border Just inside Thailand

950 Baht inc B/feast Has a Swiming pool And most rooms have nice views over Mayanmar at night

Check Em out. Dont forget the White Temple Nr Chang Rai another Pit Stop.

Personaly. I have Never had to show I had funds to Thai Immigration

    thanks for the info...

  7. you just need the one $10 for the burmese immigration on the way in (right hand side of bridge after you cross the river), if your going into the market they will give you a tempory visa for burma and you can go into the market shopping. On the way out collect you passport from the immigration office on the opposide side of the bridge (still on your right as your walking the other way now) and it will be stamped. Then just proceed to the thai immigration on the left hand side after you have crossed back over the river to get stamped back into Thailand. Word of warning, depending on your visa type you may need to show you have enough money to for your duration of visa lenght in Thailand (10,000thb for 1 month or 20,000thb for 3 months) Ive only had to do it once but it sometimes does happen. Have a good trip, im sure you will enjoy the drive up and the views are great. And don't forget to stop at the pie shop, the lemon cheese cake is to die for......

we gotta leave our passport there at the immigration? thanks for the info, will definitely stop at the pie shop...

  8. I just returned from a there this weekend, for a border crossing. My wife drove and I think if you plan 3 hours each way, its close to what it took us.

Im not sure on the Casino situation.

I would want an extra day if I were you, the drive is going to tire you a bit. It can be stressful at times. My wife has driven all over Thailand and we had an incident on the way up that brought out a sting of Thai and English obsenitiys from her and required her to pull over to calm her nerves. People just tend to drive with no regard to safety at all far to many times we felt were to close.

    Good luck.

As just noted 3 hours is not real accurate. My wife said its closer to 4 hours for us and we drive average speeds. Im not sure about the area at night but feels safe as anywhere during the day with plenty of people around. I dont think I would want to be walking around the Burma side much after dark but thats just me perhaps. The actual border crossing for me was smooth took maybe 15 minutes each way. If you got $10 American bring it or else its 500 baht for the Burma fee.

10 USD is more worth while compare to 500 baht yeah? do i need it one way or do i need 2 x 10 usd for a return trip? 4hrs each way, guess i have to re-plan my trip :o

  9. The drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai is about 2 1/2 hours and then from Chiang Rai to Mae Sai another 45 minutes...I drive fast. The resort is on the Thai side and I don't recommend going outside the market area of Tachilek once you cross into Burma. Anyway, if you car is not 100% yours you can not cross in it. It is not wise to drive across if you are unfamiliar with the area. There is a shopping street on the Thai side to the left of the border crossing with a roof over it to give shade. The resort is on that road...jst drive through the shopping area and keep going and you will see signs for Sornkaew Resort. There is a nice restaurant across the street too. The casino I am thinking of is Paradise which is closer to the golden triangle but I know there is another inside Tachilek somewhere. Be very wary! If you have time make it a three day trip. There is plenty to see...Doi Tung, Wat Ran Kuen, Golden Triangle, and certainly stop at Charin for a piece of pie!

thanks for the valuable info, i'll be going there on a rental car by budget, guess i'll have to park my car on the thai side then, is the immigration open 24 hr? the streets near the borders safe? anything to look out for?

  10. I went to look at a casino in Tachilek....maybe it is the same one you are talking about...do they have more than one?.....anyway the one I saw was pretty sad....not much activity really....very small....I'm not a gambler so it was totally boring but I think that unless you are a hard core gambler it will be very boring. As for a sales/booking office in Thailand....sell and book what? I don't think you need a booking...just show up....that's what I did. Maybe you mean a booking at the hotel?....couldn't a travel agent get you one?

Well there is not one casino in Tachilek, the whole town is full of them. I have been into 4 of them. Regina is the place about 3 km from the border. There is a new, big casino with hotel 500 m left of the bridge as Limbo said. Another one on top of a hotel about 1.5 km northeast of the bridge. And one just one km north of the bridge.

Regina is one of the bigger with hotel and a good golfcourse as I said before.

No, I am not a gambler. So far I have lost zero bath to any of the casinos in Tachilek.

But in some of them you get free drinks and free snacks!

    / Cheap Charlie :o

Any updates on the casino? all still operative? i'm heading up there this weekend, any one can provide me any info? last date posted on this was 2006, any more casino sprung up since?

  12. Hi tc4mez,

Head toward Chiang Rai and basically there is only one left turn at a t-junction and that will put you in Chiang Rai. From there the road is clearly marked to Mae Sai. I highly recommend the SORNKAEW RESORT. Its very clean, well equipped and the rooms are really nice. They range from 800 baht to 3500 baht for the VIP bungalow. Best of all it's only 5 minutes from the border crossing. The number is 089-6349992. Have fun!

thats a good price for lodging there, the resort is in chiang rai? 5 min from the border? how far is it from the casino? car can be park at the resort?

if i'm gonna stay at the casino hotel there? which do you guys recommend? i can't seems to find any rates online.

All I'm going to say is, if you get on the road to Chiang Rai make sure you stop at Charin Resort at kilometer # 142. They have the best Pies you will ever have in Thailand:)

thanks for the info, do you have any idea how long is the trip? i only have 6am to set off from Chiangmai then i'll only have about till noon the next day to return to Chiangmai, is that sufficient?

Anyone able to translate the thai wordings perhaps? Pardon my ignorance, I'm pretty new with 'this' & I'm very keen to find out :o Hope I place this in the correct folder, moderators please shift to appropriate folder if I'm in the wrong place...

  17. Dear all,

I've bought a statuette from a museum in Chiang Mai recently. I wish to place it in my car but I have feedbacks & comments on placing facing the driver & facing the front from my friends (non thai)...

What is the correct placement for the mini statuette? I have a 5 headed (paprikaneh) aka Lord Ganesha statuette to be place in my car. All comments & feedbacks are welcome.

    Regards,

    Loh

  18. Can someone translate this to english for us perhaps?

Got the picture from another website which I "MAI KOW JAI" the language as well...

btw for some reason I can't seems to post the link on my replies or posting, is there a setting here that allows that?

  19. This was done by Ajarn Noo, his website is xxxxx but be warned, he is VERY expensive.

"Sak yant" is what it is called in Thai, the tattoo in the picture is "ha teaw" or 5 lines (sorry for the way I've spelt this).

Yes I've heard that he is expensive but for a few months I have never get to know the exact pricing, is there a spokesman for ajahn noo whom we can contact via email or mobile? Preferably english speaking...

For the "ha teaw" that you have mention, is it different for every person? read from some sites that one of the lines is on your zodiac sign, can someone enlighten me?

    Regards,

    tc4mez
