  1. Flash is horrible software and any effort to conspire some conspiracy of why Apple doesn't use it it silly. Anyone who is tech savvy can understand why Apple doesn't use Flash. It's bloated software, Adobe still hasn't created a decent version for any mobile vendor and it crashes all the time. It is the #1 cause of browser crashes on both my Mac and PC.

I'm very thankful Apple has left off the bug ridden software and made way for more open standards with HTML5. If anyone is curious just check out Steve Jobs open letter about why Apple didn't use Flash. He explains it very plain and simple.

Of course, since His Jobsness said so, it MUST be true. There's no way this open letter is a PR move from Apple. They are not very good at marketing ,right?

More seriously, no one said Flash is perfect. I, myself, will be happy to find a good replacement for it (and put my hopes on HTML5). But maybe as a "tech savvy" person, you should investigate why your Mac and PC crash all the time. I use flash on all my devices, including smartphones, and I have yet to experience a single crash (flash-related or not) over the last year or so.

In other words, Flash is not great, but it's not the amazingly horrible piece of software some try to depict, and while Apple's decisions are surely based partly on technical and user experience considerations, there's also a political and commercial dimension to it. I'd be worried for any tech company's future if they based their decisions purely on technical grounds.

Feel free to comment a rebuttal on anything Steve said in that letter. As the poster below explained in great detail, Flash is bug ridden and poor software. There is no need to include on iOS and I thank them for that. If you're going to call that open letter PR and Marketing then at least comment on the things he wrote in the letter. If not then you're just making baseless accusations.

As for being more tech savvy and figuring out why Safari crashes all the time, there isn't anything to discuss. When your browser crashes and says "Flash Plugin has crashed Safari" and it only happens when browsing a site with lots of Flash, then what else if there for me to look at it. When I'm browsing a website that doesn't have Flash Safari works perfectly. It's a pretty cut and dry situation despite what you may think.

  3. Thanks for the heads up. I was looking at iPad 2 and iPhone 4 prices and it does look like Apple has done a great job of getting the prices down to reasonable levels when compared to the US.

I'm probably not heading to Thailand until October which I'm hoping the new iPhone 5 will be out by then, probably September. I'll revisit the situation then cause it seems Thailand doesn't always get the iPhone immediately.

  4. Does anyone know if the iPhones sold at official resellers are carrier locked or not like the US. It is widely rumored Apple is going to start selling unlocked iPhones in the US for $650 and curious if it's worth it to bring some to Thailand and make a little spending money.

I would presume an official unlocked iPhone would be worth more than a hacked/unlocked iPhone.

  5. If anyone is interested I am coming from the States to Bangkok for a bit of vacation time. I currently sell Apple products here in the States and will be bringing my iPad with me on my trip. If anyone is interested in buying it I'd be willing to part with it once I get to Bangkok and will just get another one when I come back home.

Just let me know if anyone is interested. I could also bring a new iPad to someone if they wish but I would have to have payment before hand. Figured I would make the offer since the iPad is still very hard to come by right now.

  6. I figured I would post in this section since the Classifieds are is a little empty right now plus it's full of housing ads. I'm going to be traveling to Thailand on Friday from the States and we will out and around for about 2.5 weeks. I recently purchased an iPhone 4 and figured there might be some people in Bangkok who could use one. The phone works fine, has had a screen protector on it since the very beginning and only has a few scuffs on the back.

It is a 32GB White 3GS and I will also have it unlocked so it can be used immediately. If anybody has any questions they can just post in this thread and we'll from there. I'll be arriving in Bangkok Saturday but will leave town the very next day in the evening. I will be back in Bangkok a few more times over the next few weeks before I go back home so my schedule is strict.

  7. Now obviously this is a hard question to answer (which no correct answer exists) so I am merely seeking people's own opinions on everything going in Bangkok right now.

The reason I ask is that I will be coming back to Thailand at the end of July this year. I was in Bangkok a few months last year and everything was just fine with no problems. I've been trying to familiarize myself with everything going on because things were not this bad when I was here last year, at least I don't think so.

I love Bangkok so much but I'm starting to realize that I might need to have a Plan B for when I arrive and head straight to the islands. Any insight would be helpful, I feel somewhat out of the loop.

  8. In other words, you have two trips to Thailand:

Arrival 28 JUN 2009; departure 09 AUG 2009; duration of stay 43 days.

Arrival 29 AUG 2009; departure 09 SEP 2009; duration of stay 11 days.

Before you leave the USA you should get a single entry tourist visa from a Thai consulate. On arrival in Thailand, you will receive permission to stay for 60 days. This covers your first stay in Thailand.

For your second arrival in Thailand on 29 AUG, you do not need a visa. On arrival, you will receive permission to stay for 30 days. As you have a ticket from Bangkok to the USA for 09 SEP you will have no problem boarding in Budapest without a visa for Thailand.

    Maestro

Thanks a ton for the info, just what I was looking for. Is the single entry tourist visa something I can get at the airport or online or will it be one of those forms they hand me on the plane before we land? I will be flying from Dallas > Tokyo > Bangkok

  9. I know that my question can be answered reading on the forums but I feel more comfortable with someone posting the correct response.

I'm from the United States and I'm 23 years old.

I will be flying to Bangkok on June 28 with a return date of September 8th. During that trip though (August 9-29) I will be flying from Bangkok to Budapest, Hungary and then be flying back to Thailand with about 11 days or so left before I return to the states.

With my particular situation what visas or forms will I need to expect to fill out when I arrive, plus what fees will be involved.

Thanks for everyone's info in advance.
