  1. All buyers in my area are happy with 18-20 month tubers. Cassava researchers report that starch content starts to reduce after 18 months but none of my buyers measure starch content.

Recent rain caused the price to drop here (Nakhon Sawan) – currently buying at 2,800 baht/t locally; I've delayed harvest until after the New Year.

Mealybugs are starting to show up in some cassava farms in my village – my crop currently free of the pest.

Hi Khonwan the price are up to 3000 bath now after a drop to 2500 bath. We have contacted the TTSA office in Huay Bong and asked about the A.Lopezi. Was tolled that it only was good against the pink type of mealybug. Have you heard anything about that ?

If it was the pink mealybug and it was many rais infected they would bring wasps to the area , if it was a couple of rais wasps could be picked up at the office.

But if it was the white type wasps would only die. Had to harvest 2 rais today that was infected with white mealybug. Regards Mikki B)

  2. Hi Gotlost..............I was tolled the same, price now around 2500bht/ton if you look on the exportprice on starch its 580 dollars/ton thats 40dollars from top price in may and then roots where paid 4000bht/ton or more . some guys are making alot of money but it aint the farmers :realangry: if the price that Somo wrote about are still valid it might be an option to transport the cassava to Chayaphum.........??????????

anyone that has any knowlegde about freight prices???

    Regards Mikki B)

  3. Hi Somo Your stems will be fine next year, they seem to grow better when cut once, the best planting material comes from the middle 1/3 of the stem if i dont recall wrong.

Lots of farmers planted whenever they bought stems this year in my area and alot of it died due to the dry period that was long in the area. Many are alredy speaking that cassava is no good and sugarcane are starting to be the next "goldrush dreamcrop" for them.

  4. Derris Involuta (Jewel Vine) and Derris Elliptica (Tuba Plant) are plats that i recon you can find i LOS they contains rotenone. Rotenone Powder was used in my country to clear even small lakes before planting trout etc. Now its forbidden though, ive seen it in action and its really efficient.

  5. Thanks so much Mikki. I will do that. Off hand do you know what a ton goes for these days?

    jdub

Hi jdub sorry not at the moment but ill ask my friend his bil is in the sugar cane farming. Prices are up and down during the year but ive heard of up to 1500thb/ton if you wait some time after you delivered the canes to the mill youll get a higher price you can also get a better price if you deliver over a certain amount of tonnes. so if you are near the limit you could buy some of neigbours and make some extra bahts

see if you can get some numbers at the mills in your area. and talk to thoose who grow sugar canes in your area. do some really good recon of as much as possible and you will save baths and get a better start

what area are you located in?

    Regards Mikk i B)

  6. HI totally agree with you watersedge. ive been looking around my area and the farms are to small often, and if they are bigger lack of money to farm and knowlegde and also the will to do all that work

I harvested some cassava this year and paid the workers after one week , most of them dident work next week so i asked why not work this week , mrs said they happy now have money

guess that thailand are up to great changes in the future, question is how long traditionall thinking will slow the development

    Regards Mikk i B)

  7. HI Jdub if you use the search function you will get some answers use "sugar cane" and do some really good research in your area..... soilcondition , water ,how far to buyer labour costs etc etc...

if everything is great i recon around 15 tons / rai

    Regards Mikki B)

  8. Hi Scully Police came to the familys house some months ago and wondering about the tractors the car and the amount of land that the family now farm. They suspected that the family was in to the drug trade. They just said please look around and then explained that they had a "farang" in the family. Police just said "ok now understand" and drove off.

    Regards Mikki B)

cool, so you are as rich as a drug lord! :whistling:

yepp at least i was before i started farming :D now im not B) Mikki

  9. hi im also wondering where your numbers are soidog2 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you throw in some and a lot of smoke as it seems to me. and the soup you are suggesting if you do +100rai your roadkills must be elephants or a heard of waterbuffalos at least,,,,,,,,,,,,,

this have been a pleasent forum an very informative so lets hope it will stay that way

Regards to you all cassavafarmers and others that have contributed to this forum Mikki B)

  10. Hi Dmax i should go for cassava on 10 rais sugargrowers are operating on really larger areas is what i studied (so far) becasuse the mill is normally doing the harvest and 10 rais is not worth the troubble .cassava needs also more work and you get a better idea of the familys endurance to take care of things .

Thats my own op when i started to farm. so far so good but theres always minor problems to be delt with im not a seasoned farmer i must admitt ,but i followed Khonwans op and im happy with the results

    Regards Mikki B)

  11. Hi Soidog2 Yes prices are not similar , it vary from area to area.

are there lots of people, lots of tractors /lack of tractors etc.... lots....then the prices are lower maybe...you farang=big moneyB)

and how keen are people to work? Lots of parameters to consider. an example. i rented land for 650bh/trai/year from a person who wanted money "leo leo" and going rate are around 800/1200 thb for similar land. so you must do some really good recon in your own area to get close to the best numbers.

    Regards Mikki

  12. hi dmax i totally agree wit soidogs advice . try something in small scale and see how you and the family get along whit it. and consider the fact that if you want result in whatever you try, be prepared to deal with the family you have to be able to "yakk yakk". smile will go away for some time but you will need the respect

we grow cassava and i have some knowledge of farming and i read alot on the subject before i started . tv are a good place to get ideas and advices

    regards Mikki B)

  13. Hi Maipasathai........... I saw a bargraph but what i remember of it it didendt show any "golden month" to harvest . My guess is that global demad has a big effect on the cassava price , due to the big export . russias problems with their crops maybe was the factor that peaked the prices a coupple months ago, but the bargraph showed nov/dec was most year good months to harvest. and i think it can be differences between areas in thailand as well to consider,

ill harvest half in march/april and the other half in dec next year . Btw has any seen Chanat S op in real giving the fertilizer on the leafs of the cassava

    Regards MikkiB)

  14. Hi everyone In the area(bueng sam phan district ) where we have our farm there have been problems with mealybugs and lack of rain during the last months. People have alredy lost their crop mostly due to the fact of planting cassava and dident get any rain.

we lost about 2 rais my guess is that the soil got overheated it has lots of small stones in that part of the field But it rained last week and the rest looks ok I tried to explain to the mrs about the wasp and asked her to speak with her mother to look if there is any information about any realease in Petchabun.............now i have a headache  is there anyone that heard of it ? tried to lok on the net but couldent find anything

Im not in thailand at the moment and its my second year so im sorry that i cant tribute to this forum ........... but thanks to all information you guys have posted

    Regards Mikki

  15. Hi Steve I saw that around Sap Samo Thot there was mealy bugs on most fields in various grades of damage. But the farmers dident seem to worry, most said they will go away when the rains come. I hade about 2rais infected with mealy bugs when we harvested.

And i do worry about next crop because the problem of getting neigbours to take the mealy bug seriously.

    regards mikki

  16. Hi all....ive seen a cassava planting machine in Brasil and it cuts and plants the stems flat just under the soil. Not vertical as performed in Thailand. It also did the ridging at the same time, not so high though.

Anyone that maybe have tried this in Thailand?

Advantage= rapid planting and low on labour hours, saves one trip on the field

Disadvantage= Maybe the price on machine ???? Low ridging???? Growth percent of stems???? and more????

regards to you all Mikki :)
