  1. Hoping for a bit of clarification. Another paper says that we was convicted on the charge of assault. It would be amazing that the maximum penalty for such a conviction is only 30 days in jail, but I suppose anything is possible in Amazing Thailand. Is the penal code really that light on assault?

It also pointed out that in court the convict refused to apologize for the attack and furthermore he stated that his actions were intentional.

While it appears that this is his first actual conviction, given his checkered past, as highlighted earlier, it seems incredulous that this person will remain as a Member of Parliament.

I also guess nothing developed further from his earlier troubles justifying the degree he received from a diploma mill in the Philippines.

Here's a little more of his checkered past as posted in The Nation earlier today.

    Pleasant individual!

Interesting to note that he couldn't contest a seat in 2005 because he lacked the educational qualifications.

Guess he has been back to school since then.

    A violent history

    >> Karun Hosakul, 41, allegedly beat his former wife, Ratchadawan. In April 2005, she divorced him.

    >> Two months after the divorce, Karun attacked her at Don Mueang Airport as she returned from a trip abroad. Karun grabbed her hair, slapped her and threatened to disfigure her. She was rescued by airport guards.

    >> In 2006, Karun assaulted a guard at an abandoned cinema, when he and his friends were refused entry. He kicked the guard twice in the head, reportedly shouting: "I will be back. Don't you know who I am?"

    >> In 2007, as a Bangkok City Councillor, Karun head-butted an undercover policeman at a cock fight.

    >> In 2005, Karun was stopped from contesting a Bangkok seat because he lacked the educational qualifications required.

  2. Hyperbole of the reds- a million reds will come to Bangkok.

We will kill Apisit with a car bomb.

The vitriol spewed out day to day by the community radio stations of ' Klum Rak Chiang Mai' is a disgrace to any thinking person.

That explains why he already has 10 separate charges against this guy. Long past due to pull the plug on these types.

If he thinks it's ok threatening to murder someone and then just attempt to play it off as some sort of joke, he should try pulling that stunt on an airplane and see what happens, eg. "I'm going to kill the pilot."

  3. Hun Sen is still a wiley old goat...

Indeed, it's not been easy to postpone trials for his murderous Khmer Rouge brethren for so long

30 Years After Fall of the Khmer Rouge, Justice Still Elusive

(New York, January 5, 2009) - Thirty years after the fall of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia's culture of impunity remains as strong as ever, Human Rights Watch said today. Under Prime Minister Hun Sen, the Cambodian government continues to obstruct the United Nations-supported court created to try senior Khmer Rouge leaders and others most responsible for the deaths of up to 2 million people during the Khmer Rouge-era.

  4. :) ^ Drunk posting doesn't add much to the discussion. :D

My point being, for those not sober enough to recognize it, is that even if quality of the local formal print media is lacking, the reader knows who the author is.

For all anyone knows, thailandjumpedtheshark is Noppadon and *ink is Jakrapob. Would that be information worthwhile knowing when considering what they are blogging?

  5. Who exactly is: thailandjumpedtheshark ?

Which not knowing is part of the hazards of posting blog entries. It's an unclear anonymity that the news from the general media doesn't have. That makes it open to all sorts of unknown biases and agendas.

Am I to presume nobody knows who exactly is thailandjumpedtheshark?

Strange-looking link but worth a read as part of the background to understanding the case - for those who can be bothered to do their own research as opposed to simply swallowing the pre-digested script.

Who exactly is the author of this blog: *ink ?

Thailand Jumped The Shark, New Mandala and the excellent Bangkok Pundit are way more informative than The Nation when it comes to anything political in Thailand. The Nation has been caught out many times rewriting history to suit it's master's views.

    Who exactly is Bangkok Pundit?

But I do notice that Thailand Jumped The Shark, Orange Cafe, Bangkok Post (referenced in another post above), New Mandala, and Bangkok Pundit all have their own version of a forum so perhaps we should move the discussion to these other forums or at least discuss the frailties of these other forums on this forum?

Also, can we post links to another forum? (a blogger's comments' box is essentially a forum)

Additional time line related to royal decorations:

August 2005: Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's PM Office decree gives eight criteria for the recalling of royal decorations, including if a person is convicted by the highest court and ordered to serve time in prison.

October 2008: Thaksin's brother-in-law Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat's Government Spokesman (and current Red Shirt Leader) Natthawut Saikua announces that ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will likely agree to return all of his royal decorations if required to by law. If Thaksin does not seek a retrial within 30 days (he didn't), the PM's Office must seek royal approval to demand the royal decorations be returned (the then-government did not).

And now 13 months after not living up to his pledge to return the decorations voluntarily, action to do so involuntarily is progressing.

    Thaksin´s 10 royal decorations recalled

BANGKOK, 30 October 2009 (NNT) - The Secretariat of the Cabinet and the National Police Bureau are in the process of stripping 10 royal decorations and police ranks from former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Cabinet Secretary-General, Surachai Pooprasert stated that the overall procedures would take a short time to complete. Once the Cabinet Secretariate examines all related details, the issue would be submitted to the Prime Minister for approval and to the Office of His Majesty's Principal for further consideration at the final stage.

The royal decorations to be recalled include Member (Fifth Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand, Companion (Fourth Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand, Companion (Fourth Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant, Commander (Third Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand, Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant, Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand, Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant, Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn, Knight Commander (Second Class, lower grade) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao and Boy Scout Citation Medal (First Class).

  9. Awesome!

Any particular reason you seem compelled to repeat this word in every post you make?

If you are trying to be sarcastic, fine, but could you at least vary it up a bit.

ohh, i talked with an other member about the etymological origin of a certain britisch english word. he said it's norse, my position was it is more likley that the norse word in question is just a Cognate.

i wrote also a more abstrac entry and to demonstrate cultural difference in historiography and histories of histories i worte a little bit about the history of historical linguistics studies and the use of different term for the same thing. indo-european languages vs. indo-germanic languages and so on.

but than came the '76 peacecorps and declared everything for BS. after this i just let a tumbleweed roll through the intellectual defoliated steppe.

in an other case i stumbled across the following line: Thai culture and civilization are utterly incapable of producing ... an Obama. posted by a board member.

my reply using the word hubris got deleted. okay hubris is of greek origin an not british english. i ask members of the super team for an advice and what what would be the appropriate choice of words for a reply and their answer was somewhat Zen, oracularly and quickly.

i conclude i should rely more on the optimistic branch of Bokononism.

and i think awesome is a good choice. it has something rabelaisian in it, almost. it is a fell good message. it is awesome. it is also US-american. and the US-american viewpoint, attitude is never wrong at this webforum. the risk of a delete for whatever reason is less.it will be never off topic. if i write more than 3 lines the risk that it goes off-topic is much higher.

so what is your problem with that? other forum characters spend their whole time with posting repetitive and redundant comments since years. 4,5,6 sometimes words and a smiley. knee-jerk reactions. unamusing. the usual.

i still offer a mixture in the style of my comments. that Abhisit is awesome is the mainstream opinion here, so i cheer a lot of people up.
