Foreign man dies as he works out at Tony’s Gym.

Police from Pattaya were called to the Tonys Gym on Pattaya Third Road on Tuesday Afternoon after staff reported the sudden death of a foreign patron. Police and a Sawang Boriboon Rescue Unit were sent to the location along with a forensic doctor who inspected the body of a foreign man who was not carrying any forms of ID. We believe that his first name is John and he may be from Norway but this cannot be confirmed, he is thought to be aged between 30 and 35. After an examination the forensic doctor believes the man may have suffered a heart attack whilst using the fitness equipment. Although we are unsure of the safety procedures put in place by Tonys Gym and we understand that blame for the accident has not been put on the Gym, we would like to warn you that should you wish to join a gym here in Pattaya please ensure that the gym is manned by qualified gym instructors at all times, make sure there is someone qualified in first aid and always undertake a fitness assessment prior to joining to ensure you are aware of your limits and do not use any piece of equipment which can cause you injury or health problems.

I am a member of Tony's Gym on 3rd road. You are required to leave your membership card at desk when using facilities.

No ID found....perhaps a 1st time visitor to gym or the police simply forgot to check the lockers. Very unsual, only 30-35 year old, dying from apparent heart attack. I wonder when did the staff notice that he had a heart attack. Where were the trainers?

Best to have a "stress test" at reputable hospital, around 4,000 baht, just to play it safe before starting a strenuous exercise/weight lifting program. This way, at least doctor around in case of any heart problems during the stress test. :o

When I used to exercise there, like most people I think, I didn't have any ID actually on me - but I'd have it close by in a bag with the other stuff like clothes, towel water etc. No pockets...

I wonder if the dead guy had perhaps taken some viagra or other drugs the night before?

It wouldn't even need to be that - training hard on a hangover can kill you...

Could have been alchohol, steroids or just plain bad luck.

My sympathies to his family - whoever they may be. It's too young to die for sure.

pattaya city news , you are a newspaper , you are supposed to serve the public who read your newspaper.

perhaps you should send one of your professional journalists around to survey the gym facilities in pattaya and report back and inform the readers just which fitness centres are manned by QUALIFIED instructors at all times , and which fitness centres have someone PROPERLY TRAINED in first aid procedures on the premises at all times.

and inform the readers of exactly what qualifications these people have and in which gyms they can be found.

only then can the public make informed choices about which establishments to support.

only then will standards be raised.

I thought you are required to register and submit your membership card with your name and picture on it to work out at Tony's Gym.

They don't know who he is?, hummm...

I use the gym there every second day or so and just pay a daily rate and don't have a memebership or ever carry any ID.

This is not so unusual but a guy of his young age carking is rather unusual.

However he could be a steroid user or been taking viagara or had an underlying heart condition who knows...

There are trainers everywhere in Tonys so it is very likely one of them saw him cark it.

NOt sure of their quals but you have to remember that they are very poorly paid.

Sad story...that being said i am off to Tonys right now as been overweight is more likely to kill me...

Suspected drugs intake the cause of Norwegian’s death at Tony’s Gym

n10-632.jpg

Drugs are being mooted as the cause of death of a young Norwegian who collapsed while exercising at Tony’s Gym on Pattaya Third Road on August 30.

Police found a stash of drugs amongst Stein’s possessions.

At the scene police found the body of John Stein, age 29. There were no injuries other than a bitten tongue sustained during what appeared to have been a heart attack. Stein’s body was transferred to the medical authorities for a full autopsy.

Police interviewed Prasert Panomsri, the gym employee who had informed them of the death. He stated that he was overseeing the gym when Stein fell to the floor with spasms. Police have found illegal substances amongst the dead man’s possessions.
