  1. Half the UK's debt is held by the BOE, it can be written off and does not need tax rises to cover it. Normally excess electronic printing of money would wreck Sterling (as per Gordon Brown when the pound went from 60 to 40 baht almost overnight) but they got away with it because other large countries did the same thing. They do need to move to a balanced budget ASAP and stop QE so that UK does not end up as a third world country with a worthless currency  (pertinent to UK pensions). There is huge bloat in councils and government so no need for new taxes, just get things more efficient but that means - the major problem - getting politicians to accept less power over the populace.

  2. UK figures suggest that the vaccine stops serious illness of current variants but still allows the vaccinated to pass on the virus if infected (hence Merkel trying to quarantine Brits even when vaccinated). As an unknown virus that possibly will have widespread infection in the UK but without serious illness, it will be interesting to see if variants emerge from this widespread dispersion. Also A & E is currently overwhelmed with kids with an excess of illnesses. Long term effects of Covid and vaccines are unknown.

  3. If you search for Thai ID numbers on google you will find that the first number does indeed signify different states of nationality or legality (wikipedia the easiest to understand, though the definitions of the first digit vary according to which site you read!).

Imagine the outcry if the UK introduced ID cards and had the same idea!

The Thais currently have no problems with dual nationality so there is no downside to getting a British passport. The laws on nationality of Thai/farang children did change at one point, post 1991. I did pay support post relationship with Thai mother so never had any child support problems but it would have <deleted> me off if I had to pay UK levels, as demanded by our laws, into what was then a third world country outside of Bangkok, especially as the default for disappearing local husbands was zero baht.

  4. I think the mother annoyed them by refusing to register the birth until I came over from the UK so she could get my name on the birth certificate (I suppose being incorrect actually insulated me from any child support issues so maybe the registrar was doing me a favour!). It was Chula hospital as well and unmarried - I have a vague recollection of different laws on Thai nationality for mothers who were unmarried to foreigners that was later changed, which possibly made it easier for the mother to change to Thai nationality (which sounds the wrong way round but TIT). I am waiting a copy of the "new" birth certificate, which is a different one to the original and not amended.

He will inherit a house and nice chunk of upcountry land from the mother eventually but seems unable or unwilling to hunker down to a job at Thai rates, British nationality would let him do grunt work here at about ten times the rate they get there whilst having minimal living costs by staying in my house. In theory anyway.

  5. Facial recognition means that if you enter/leave on a different passport with a different name they will now catch you (you can be blacklisted, go home and get a real passport in a different name, etc).

The really frightening thing is that the database that monitors foreigner movements (ie hotels submitting your details via the internet as soon as you check in) can be accessed by Mafia types if they want to find out where you are, if you have annoyed them in the past by doing stuff such as enjoying too much almost free sex.

If you don't play by the Thai rules it can quickly become a frightening place.

  6. Hi, the translation of my son's surname has gone somewhat awry on his ID card (this being my surname). It was originally translated from English to Thai on the birth certificate at the Bangkok hospital where he was born. At that time, 1991, the birth cert was Thai only. Once translated back to English for the ID card it has come out quite different to what I was expecting, presumably by the office in Petchabun where it was issued. The Thai characters have not changed.I do not live with the family and do not visit Thailand any more but was looking to get him British citizenship via from UKF as never married. My suggestion to his mother was that he could keep the same Thai characters in his surname but get it translated to my surname. She does not think this is possible or know which office to go to? Any thoughts? The alternative for UKF is a DNA test, which can be done by an approved co with tests in Thailand and UK collated by the UK company but racks up the cost a bit.

The registrar in the hospital seems either vindictive or incompetent as she neither put the mother's ID number nor my passport no on the form. She also classed the child as an illegal immigrant despite having a Thai mother, later changed by the mother, so the ID card number is now different to the one on the original birth certificate (the fist letter in the ID card classifies the person, so it has gone from 7 to 5, the latter now correctly indicating Thai citizenship but with a dual national status). All of which would give a Home Office worker a good laugh, I guess.

  7. The new PM, Boris Johnson, probably won't be amused as he is a good friend of former PM Abhisit and was probably planning to lounge around in the embassy... but you can imagine Madame May being keen on dumbing down the presence in Bangkok.

But aren't embassy grounds a gift of the country they sit in, so really the money should go back to Thailand? Also, why didn't the embassy retain the land and offer Central a 30 year lease... in 30 years time it would be worth an awful lot more,,, or maybe they figure Bangkok will be flooded out and the land worthless?

Would not surprise me if the new embassy is in a terrible location for individuals to access.

  8. The gay area is on the opposite side to Patpong off Surawongse Rd and a little further down towards Rama 4, a quite long soi with the equivalent of go-go bars on each side, on two levels... actually should say bi-sexual as some foreign and local women use the bars to pay for guys, too. Live gay sex shows and guys dancing naked showing off their hard-ons (only Thais with reasonably sized members are allowed to dance to keep face for the nation), some guys able to turn their hard-ons on and off at will, as well as twitch the heads of their cocks. Mostly graduates of gay brothels so 18-30 years old and an unknown level of disease. And, yes, moneyed up go-go dancers go there to pay for guys with some of their free money from foreigners, often a birthday treat.

  9. You cam imagine the rage of a Thai woman after taking him into the bosom of the family only to find he really did have just 13k baht a month to live on.

If he has no friends or family in the UK, all he has to look forward to is life in a hostel with druggies etc, presuming the Thais just kick him out and black-llst him, or perhaps a bedsit if he gets lucky and finds someone to take him on housing benefit.

  10. I think Bernard Trink is still alive if not kicking and could surely be persuaded to restart his meanderings in the neon for a small stipend. Sounds like his deleted weekly diatribe seriously pissed off some dark characters who had a word with the new owner who in turn I suspect runs the escort agencies that feature on Stick's site (no proof of that so may be wrong)...  Stick to buy back his site for a cent on the dollar?

  11. Generally, Thai Mafia types would have access to immigration databases, including hotels etc visited in Thailand and home address in farangland  and they would  probably get the hitman to do a drug run as well as shoot the victim (to justify the cost)... the impetus would be how much face they have lost in Thailand. With smart mobile phones it is also easy to distribute photos of the victims to overseas Thais if they are not able to immediately track him down. No idea about this case but generally anything is possible.

  12. If you want to see a bunch of screaming, manic kids go to a shopping mall at the weekend in Manila... much worse than the Thais!

My own son was bought up the Thai Way and at 23 is a fine fellow who basically burns through any money his mother (not my wife fortunately) gets her hands on. She constantly complains about this but I find it hilarious as it is not my money!

  13. May have been a case of mistaken identity, Thais have problems telling farang apart and often not that concerned as long as they have someone to beat up. On a number of occasions I have been at Nana when some farang has been viciously beaten and am fairly sure it was meant for me! I am sure I am not the only on on the retribution list so fairly easy to be mistaken for someone else I would guess. Mafia thugs are still mired in peasant stupidity and not to be reasoned with, although it is great fun to take the piss out of them.

  14. I seem to recall that at my school only the headmaster could cane kids, a fearsome creature to us kids, and it would have stopped things getting out of hand by frustrated teachers. I don't think the age has anything to do with it, in the UK you have three year olds strutting around full of their human rights who need to learn that every action has a consequence but very often don't. Parents look for schools that are caring and loving when they should be looking for schools that have a high level of discipline.

  15. Visa rules can be changed on a government whim and businesses can be taken over by mafia thugs if you are obviously successful so not sure that either are great reasons to move to Cambodia... ten year ago I thought PP much safer than anywhere in PI but food quite expensive to same standard as Thailand but there were an awful lot of ex-brothel gals in the foreign biased nightclubs who were too dangerous (HIV etc) to play with and now seem be pricing themselves out of the market as per Thais so have not bothered with a new visit yet.

The Cambo government is to be congratulated on the protecting over-50 foreigners from the predatory young ladies of the night, though.

  16. I misread this and thought he had been extradited from Farangland to Thailand and then been beaten in jail. The upside to this kind of story is that it is unlikely western government with extradite to Thailand because the way Thai treat prisoners (human rights) - which given the way Thais make things up is probably just as well,
