  1. We recently stayed at a hotel just opposite The Market Village. It is a very busy road and very dangerous trying to cross. However, there is an overhead walkway just a little way down the road.by the school if only people would take the time to walk down and use it. It is a very short distance away. Has anyone tried crossing the Hang Dong Road in Chiang Mai? This must be one of the worst roads for pedestrians to try and cross.

  2. A couple of days ago we bought some floor tiles from Homepro and asked if they could lay them for us. They quoted 11,500 bt for laying the 25 sq.m. Two of their "technicians" came to do a survey and said we would have to pay up front before they would do the work. We offered to pay 50% and the rest when the work was done. They said they wanted all the money before carrying out the work. We told them we were not prepared to pay the whole amount until we saw the finished result. We have now found someone (recommended) who will do it for 3,250 bt.

  3. Thought I would post a warning about delays at Hull in issuing Visas. We have always sent our passport and visa application off to the Hull Consulate about a week or so before our departure date. We send by special delivery at a cost of about 6.22 GBP, and it has always come back by return of post. My husband sent his off a week before he was due to leave for Thailand. It didn't arrive back by return of post as usual, so we checked the tracking on Royal Mail website and it had been delivered to them the day after posting. He allowed another day and when it still hadn't arrived, he got a bit concerned with his departure date getting nearer. He rang Hull who told him that they now have to have approval from the Thai Embassy in London. In the meantime, they had put a notification on their website to allow another 24 hours for the passport/visa to be returned. To cut a long story short, it didn't arrive back for another week (around 10 days after they areceived it) resulting in him missing his flight (non-refundable) and him having to book another.

Just a warning to anyone due to apply to Hull or if you have any friends who may be joining you, to inform them to allow much more time than usual!

The visa was a Multi-Entry Non-Immigrant 'O' by the way!

  4. Yes, it is staff problems. If Steve had enough staff he would be open from 9.am. as he does a great breakfast! So if anyone knows anyone who might be interested in working there, please ask them to go along and see Steve. We need a good British pub and it is our local!

  5. Where is the Dog and Bone ?

About 50 m off Hang Dong Road, opp the big Sony sign, so travelling

south from CM turn left into the soi that's pretty well opp the Sony sign

The Dog and Bone is my local too. Good company and farang food. Also they have recently taken on a Thai cook so Thai food is good too. Good pool table and Steve arranges regular pool competitions. Worth supporting guys! So sorry my fellow countryman Pedr is going - best of luck in your future ventures Pedr! Iechyd da!!!!

  6. Thanks Charles - it was not for me, but for my son. He used to go to Kwang Viang Mooban but they have taken the equipment away and put in a pool and snooker table. I will pass the infomation on it him and, if he can travel to San Patong, I will get back to you. We live on Ban Wangtan but the gym equipment there is unusable. Thank you once again.

Am new in Chiang Mai and they come into a bar in hang dong last week where i was having a quiet drink. As am new in Chiang Mai it did put me off being in Thailand. Am sure it was the same scammers,?

yes It was the same crew; but I sincerely hope these scumbags are not the reason that this particular bar is now up for sale.

I still have not seen/heard as to the status of this group. Anyone have firm follow-up information??? Like how many were actually arrested and are they still in jail or have they been bailed out??

What about the status of the tag-a-long police officer involved, was he picked up also or was this just a guy that went to the rent-a-cop-uniform shop .

And some explanation how this violation of the law was permitted to go on for years.

And while we are at it , what is the disposition of the Pattaya arrest and bail out???

Be nice to be informed a bit more

The police officer was not in a rent-a-cop uniform. He is a senior police officer who is or was working at Hang Dong Police Station. We have spoken to him there on a previous occasion. He was very arrogant, wearing a sidearm, and tried to stop us (without success), videotaping him on phone camera. This has been or will be submitted to Phuping Police Station.

  8. We need to move some bar/restaurant equipment, ie large 2-door bottle cooler, chest freezer and smaller kitchen equipment from Sawang Daen Din (70 km other side of Udon Thani) to Chiang Mai. Does anyone know a removal company, or someone with large truck, who would do this at a reasonable cost?

  10. Try the Centara Duangtawan. It has gym and swimming pool, is right in the centre of things, and you should be able to get a room there for around 1000 bt. I have stayed there in the past for around this price, albeit a couple of years ago. I wouldn't have thought their rates would have increased that much, especially now that there are very few tourists around and it is low season.

  11. I believe I have the right place...

Go west from the NW corner of the moat on Huay Kaew Road to the Shell gas station just west of Kad Suan Kaew; turn right and take the road that heads generally north from there (Soi Ratchaphuk) past Nakorn Ping Condos and Chiang Mai Lodge continuing onto what looks like a dead end road. Ban Sabai Sabai is on the right side just a 1/2 block onward.

They have one place [a small cottage-like apartment] that will be available in about 3 months.

I am sure you are right on this one Mr Brad. This sounds like the place. I have made a note of all your directions and we will go and have a look around today. Many thanks!

  12. Have a look here.

This may not be the place you're looking for.

Thanks, Blinky Bill. I had already looked at the website for Ban Sabai and realised that this is not the one - a resort and spa, not a housing area. Thanks anyway for your prompt reply.

  13. What do you mean tourist not coming. All my chum's are, they will be arriving BKK in the next week or two. Just one small problem they'll be in transit on there way to Bali.

It is plan for Mr. T to destroy Thailand bit at a time. First truism, they export industry. Don't be full to think they are safe, unless this madness is stooped little by little other industry will be effected. I saw the stock market going down and every one that that was safe. The ones that will be mostly effected are the poor, the Issan and for sure the Red shirt folks.

    WOW,

You really need to read your stuff before posting. Your spelling, grammar and word-choices are attrocious. I wonder what the annual income is for the truism industry ? Or, am I just being a full ?

Before launching into criticism, have you considered that perhaps Givenall's first language is not English, in which case you are indeed a "full".

  14. Are you a Thai citizen? Because foreigners can not "buy a house" in Thailand. Only a condominium.

    Absolutely correct.

Is the OP suggesting that members advise him on how to do something illegal?

I am confused. Both elektrified and bigwheelman seem to be replying to an OP that I cannot see. Am I doing something wrong or has the original post been removed?

Look under the thread "Buying a House".

  15. Please read the following from Jasmine Homes webpage. It is one option for buying a house in Thailand.

    Leasehold

This option has become much more popular recently, due to a relaxation in Thai law that allows foreigners to lease land for up to 30 years (with 2 successive renewals making 90 years). In fact, if the land is for commercial use (an office for example) then each lease can be for 60 years each term.

Typically the lease will allow the tenant to own the land at any time in the future should Thai law be changed to permit it, and also allow ownership to be transferred to any person (or company) nominated by the tenant at any time. This means that the lease can be converted to ownership at any time, and without further payment (other than Thai tax payable on transfer). The lease, if used as part of a 'superficies agreement' also entitles the tenant to full ownership of all buildings and developments erected on the land and full rights to transfer the benefit of the lease as they see fit. One other benefit of Leasehold is that the tax payable on registration is much lower than the tax on an outright purchase.

This option can also be used in conjunction with any of the other options above. In other words, the property can be purchased in the name of a company or Thai partner and then leased to the foreigner, giving them effective ownership for 90 years.

    What a load of B.S.

Not a very eloquent reply - can you elaborate on why you think this is what you call "B.S."?

  17. I agree with Thighlander. I live in Ban Wangtan and would recommend it. There are lots of houses to rent here - best thing to do is to take a drive around and make a note of the telephone numbers of the properties you are interested in. Nice swimming pool and good restaurant overlooking the lake.
