Hi everyone. Flying in from BKK to Krabi. I've got a ride to Ao Nang pier, but not sure what the longtail from Ao Nang to Railay West should cost me. 4 of us - me wife, 2 kids with luggage for 3 days. My Thai is pretty basic, but it's good enough to negotiate and discuss where I'm going. What's the rate for a long tail ride to Railay West? Also, will the longtails going *back* 3 days later charge me the same? Thanks.

Does anyone have a cheat sheet or video with restaurant items and their classifier? For example, if I need to ask the waiter for 2 more plates, or another order of rice, or more water.....I remember most of the nouns, but not the classifieds that go with them. Thanks.

My go to place right across the street from wat chedi luang now makes it farang style....
We're on foot or tuk tuk this trip staying at Le Meridien....can anyone suggest a place that serves khao soi at dinner nearby the hotel? Local place is fine since my Thai is passable.

Couple of transportation questions for you. Quick background...we lived in BKK until 6 months ago and we're coming back for a visit so I'm familiar with the city and I have basic Thai.
1) Wife and kids and I get into bkk in the afternoon. Mother in law gets in late that night. Is there a way to pre-book AOT for her? I don't want her to have to deal with a taxi. I'd love for her to be able to walk to the AOT desk with a receipt and not have to worry about getting to the hotel.
Wife and kids will caravan with friends to centara in pattaya later in the week, but I come the next day.
2) Our company made us give up our Thai license when we departed, but we've driven to pattaya loads of times. Will a local company let my wife rent a car with a US license? There is a local rental car place near our hotel at the corner of Sathorn and Rama 4 we want to use.
3) I've got to get to pattaya on my own on a Saturday morning around 9am. I'd prefer not to go from Silom to Ekami to get the bus then go from pattaya bus station to centara. What will a taxi run me from silom to centara? We used to live on saladaeng and I hardly saw any taxis at 9am on a Saturday morning...I can imagine trying to find one to take me to pattaya....any suggestions?
Thanks all.

Conrad Hotel Complex, GPF Towers, Lumpini Park, Sindhorn Building, Plaza Athanee. Spaniel is probably referring to the shopping complex with the Conrad in it....and there is also a grocery store inside for shopping. Lumpini is the only free parking, but it's a few minute walk or motorcycle ride up from the park entrance to the embassy. The church on Ruam Rudee often has their gates open and you could park in there for free if there's a spot open.

No, not Pocky. We had to load up on those too. These are dark orange and much smaller little sticks....savory, not sweet. About 2 inches long and smaller diameter. Sold where the potato chips are....

I moved away 1 month ago and my daughter is hassling me to get her "Thai snacks." I don't know what its called and I know they don't have it here in West Africa....let me describe.
It's a dry snack that you might see as a beer snack. They look like little, small orange french fries, but they're crispy and come in a clear bag. Each little "stick" is a couple of inches long, but they're as big around as a match stick. Does anyone know what they're called....and more importantly....can they be bought online?????

After 2 years of lugging my kids around to all of the tourist sites in BKK and looking for changing stations and high chairs, or even a toilet....I decided to put my notes together in a book.
Maybe other parents will be more prepared than my wife and I were. To date I have not found any book on Bangkok with parent/child specific information... www.bangkokwithkids.com if you want to see some of it.

I am not Buddhist and I do not want to put a religious tattoo on myself if I am not a follower of that religion....that seems to knck out about 95% of Thai-related tattoos.
Other than putting my own name on myself in Thai (which my ego isn't that big), can anyone suggest some non-Buddhist Thai related images that would look good as a tattoo? Thanks.

This is my closest mall/grocery store and it was supposed to be ready in June. A friend of mine told me yesterday the schedule is now moved to October. Anyone know when the mall is supposed to be open? (Note, I'm asking about Silom Complex not Silom Center across the street with the McDonalds)

Work will move me to West Africa for 2 years...I have confirmed with my future co workers there are a grand total of 0 Thai people there (Libreville, Gabon). I've worked too hard over the last 2 years to lose what I've learned. I'm currently at the point where I can have basic conversations with people and read a few street signs. As I will be immersing myself in French (I can already speak it fairly well), I'm going to be juggling 2 foreign languages.
Any websites or online lessons that'll at least keep my language skills from deteriorating too much for 2 years? My long haired dictionary is only good for English so she's no help.....

The waffle guy on the corner went from 10B to 12B a few months ago...but they other waffle guy around nearby stayed at 10B.
Mango sticky rice went up from 30B to 40B. I asked why..she said the flood makes it difficult to get mangos. I asked her if the price would go down when the floods went down....she ignored me. Price still 40B, but now she doesn't smile at me.
D'Oro Coffee has twice bumped their prices 5 - 10B each time over the last 2 years. Two years ago cappucino was 39B now I think it's 60B.
K. Kitty at Tulips' increased...um..well, forget it.

We have an old imported Volvo XC90 in need of tires. B quick is one option, but I wonder if anyone else has a good option for a reasonably priced SUV tires around town. Prefer Solom area but I'm willing to go out a little of that means a big change in price. Thanks.

I wonder when the price of limes go down...will the price of the drinks follow? Seems overall once prices go up they don't come down.

In the last month my regular vendors upped the price of naam manows from 5 to 10 baht citing higher prices for lemons. Why are locally grown lemons going up so much to warrant a 5baht jump in drink price?

Looking for a new 50 gallon tank with the pump, filter, etc....don't care if acrylic or glass. Anyone got a feel for the cost of these items locally versus buying online or back in USE/europe?

Just put the finishing touches on my book. I'd like to get it printed here in bkk. Any local book publishers someone can recommend? The goal is to get it in Asia Book and other local bookstores, but printing it is first step. Thanks.

OP here. One of th better threads if I do say so myself. To answer some of the questions asked of OP.
I am moving to Africa because of my job, not because I want to...but it's a good job so I'll take the two year contract with hopes of coming back to se Asia. I don't have a home in the US and my family and I have grown quite fond of bkk including making several good friends who are living here permenantly. We like the people, food, culture, etc... It would be nice to have a home to come to on vacations and between contracts. Perhaps some of the reason we've been talking about buying is nostalgia, but that's not a good reason to buy. I've been accused of being careless sometimes, but not that careless.
I don't need to buy right away and I am not interested in being upside down in a condo after a couple of years. From what people say, renting is hit or miss...but no guarantee I'll even cover the mortgage.
I think I'll hold and wait. As infrequently as we will be back during the year, it makes more sense to rent for the few weeks to a month we'd be here. Perhaps the bubble will burst and perhaps the US dollar will strengthen (or not). I'll wait and see. Thanks for everyone's input!

My contract is coming to a close in 3 months and off to the next adventure...Africa this time. I want to make BKK a home base and would like to get a downtown condo in the US$300,000 range to possibly rent while I'm away, but live in for vacations and - in the future - permanently.
My concern is the cost of condos relative to the worldwide economy. Condo prices in the higher end places cannot possibly continue in this trend of non-stop growth...or maybe they can. That's my problem.....bubble or no bubble?
I got absolutely hammered in the US buying a nice house only to sell it at 3/4 of the purchase price 1 year later. i cannot afford another financial beating like that.....particularly if I can't rent it.
Can someone look into their crystal ball and tell me when 1997 will repeat itself here?

Anyone been to the new Sofitel so on Rama 4 and Sathorn? Wondered about the quality of the food, prices of the drinks, and if all of the bars and restaurants are open yet.
