Thailand Charges 90 Year-Old Australian With Sexually Assaulting Four Sisters

    Alleged 90yo paedophile bailed

    ABC - 22 minutes ago

An elderly West Australian man facing child sex charges in Thailand has been released on bail.

Joseph Karl Kraus, 90, was arrested on suspicion of illegally detaining and raping four sisters aged between seven and 14 after the girls' father made a complaint.

He was formally charged last week. Kraus is required to report to the Chang Mai court every 12 days.

Having been imprisoned by judgment of the Thai Court

So most likely he can return.

Having been imprisoned by judgment of the Thai Court would indicate to most people that his return would be prohibited.

But for a minor offense such as this, he would most likely only be prohibited from reentering Thailand for a period of 2 years max.

I missed seeing that anywhere in the link mario provided. Do you have it?

    GM to hike Thai output

    July 01, 2010

General Motors Co plans to build a new mid-size Chevrolet truck in Thailand for export to Europe and parts of Southeast Asia as the brand makes its first push into the two regional pickup markets.

GM expects to sell at least 100,000 units of the new truck in the first year, with global production of the vehicle concentrated in Thailand and Brazil, Martin Apfel, executive director for GM's Southeast Asian operations, said in a phone interview.

"The logical consequence is to build where the customer wants it, as that keeps your costs down," Bangkok-based Apfel said. Thailand and Brazil are "the two centers of gravity for midsize trucks", he said.

GM, Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co are raising production in Thailand this year as the global economic recovery spurs domestic and overseas demand. Auto output in the nation doubled in the first five months of the year, and the Finance Ministry raised its 2010 economic growth forecast for the second time in three months yesterday as soaring exports offset the impact of recent political unrest.

Truck production is part of the Detroit-based car maker's plans to invest $467 million in Thailand. Manufacturing will start once GM's deal to assemble a truck with Isuzu Motors Ltd there ends, Apfel said, declining to provide more details about the timing.

GM's plans to build a new diesel-engine plant in eastern Rayong province are still on track, and the facility, which will produce engines for the new truck, is in its "last stages" of completion, he said.

GM, which makes the one-ton pickup truck Chevrolet Colorado and the subcompact Chevrolet Aveo at its 165-acre plant in Rayong, will boost output at the factory to more than 80,000 vehicles this year from 39,800 in 2009, Apfel said.

Nissan happy in Thailand despite political woes

    June 30, 2010

Thailand - Nissan Motor Co, Japan's third-largest car maker, remains confident in Thailand despite recent political unrest and said it was on track to double its output there to 200,000 units this year.

"Not one project suspended or delayed. Everything is on track," Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn told a news conference in Thailand on Wednesday, adding his managers in the country had not encountered any problems stemming from the political turmoil.

Ghosn reiterated comments made on Tuesday in Indonesia to the effect that the company was not planning to relocate from Thailand, its Southeast Asian hub.

Thai car sales in May rose 53.4 percent from a year before, after 43.9 percent in April.

The country is the biggest car market in Southeast Asia and a regional vehicle production and export base.

"Thailand has the benefit of a large, skilled automotive workforce, a highly developed parts and components industry, good transport and logistics infrastructure and favourable policies to promote a strong automotive industry," said Toru Hasegawa, regional vice-president for Asia and Oceania excluding China.

The launch of the low-cost compact "March" model should help production in Thailand reach Nissan's target of 200,000 units in the fiscal year starting in April, and should boost its market share in Thailand, perhaps to 10 percent by 2012, Ghosn said.

Thailand is one of its four main manufacturing and export hubs along with China, India and Mexico. The Thai unit will export 150,000 units of passenger cars and pickups worldwide this fiscal year. Of that, 70,000 units are the March, destined for the Asia and Oceania region excluding China, the company said in a statement.

Nissan's Thai plant builds five models - the March, Teana, Tiida (Latio/hatchback), the Navara pickup and the Frontier pickup.

  5. Red-Shirt MP Candidate Opens Bank Account for Election Campaign

    UPDATE : 1 July 2010

Detained red-shirt leader and candidate for Bangkok's Constituency 6 by-election has opened a bank account for election campaign expenses with a bank clerk at the Bangkok Remand Prison.

Detained red-shirt leader and Pheu Thai Party candidate for Bangkok's Constituency 6 by-election, Korkaew Pikulthong, has opened a bank account for campaign expenses with a Bangkok Bank officer at the Bangkok Remand Prison.

The bank clerk was brought to the prison by the red-shirt group's lawyer Karom Polthaklang, since Korkaew was not allowed out of prison to open the bank account at a bank branch.

Karom said he will submit Korkaew's bank account details to the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situations and ask for the ban on the red-shirt leader's financial transactions to be lifted.

The red-shirt lawyer also sought permission from the prison's chief for eleven red-shirt leaders to be put in the same room, but the request was turned down.

Pheu Thai Party Secretary-General Suree Luangwichit said her party has talked with Korkaew about approaches for the election campaign.

Pheu Thai's campaign is set to kick-off today, while major speeches will be held from this weekend onward.

Meanwhile, Suree boasted the results of a recent poll her party had conducted, which she said, indicated Korkaew is a popular candidate.

Family's lawyers meet DSI over reds's suspected fundings

Lawyers for family members of fugitive ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra reported to Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to answer questions concerning suspected financial funding for red shirts movement.

The eight people were the third batch out of 83 individuals and firms whose accounts were frozen under an order of the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) on suspicion of financing the reds protests.

They are Thaksin's daughter Pinthongta Shinawatra, his sisters Yingluck and Yaowaret Shinawatra, his brother-in-law Bannapoj Damapong, his brother General Chaisit Shinawatra, personal secretary of Mr Thaksin's ex-wife Kanchanapa Honghern, opposition Puea Thai Bangkok MPs Karun Hosakul and Wicharn Meenchainant.

Wicharn was the first to arrive at DSI headquarters together with his lawyer and details of his bank accounts. He expressed confidence that he will be able to clarify the matter as nothing unusual in the transactions. He will return on July 21 to show details of more bank accounts.

Pinthongta's lawyer; Kittiporn Arunrat, said he brought details of six bank accounts of his client, estimated to amount, with interest, to Bt20 billion, which have been frozen since 2007.

The lawyer argued that Pinthongta cannot use even a single baht from her accounts.

Kittiporn said earlier that the Shinawatras' bank accounts were frozen under the order of the Assets Examination Committee since June 2007, followed by the verdict of the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions in February 2010 and the latest CRES order on April 28.

Somporn Wongsuwan, representing Kanchanapa, said he came to the DSI office to ask in what regard he should clarify the case and will meet the investigators again July 21.

CRES Release Financial Blacklist of 'Red' Individuals and Companies

    UPDATE : 17 June 2010

Eighty-six individuals have been placed on the government's financial blacklist.

A large amount of financial transactions have been made through accounts of individuals and companies, including family members of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and red-shirt leaders.

Many individuals and companies have recently been placed under investigation by the Anti-Money Laundering Office. Many suspicious transactions have been made through people involved in the red-shirt rally.

The Department of Special Investigation plans to summon the individuals implicated in the investigation to clarify the suspicious financial transactions made over the past nine months. The investigation has categorized these individuals into five groups.

The first group is family members and those in fugitive and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's inner ring. Financial transactions valued at more than 31.5 billion baht have been made through accounts owned by these people.

The second group is active and banned politicians associated with Thaksin. They've made financial transactions valued at more than 1.5 billion baht.

The third group is leaders of the red-shirt leaders and guards, who've made approximately 83 million baht in financial transactions.

The fourth group is military and police officials with close ties to Thaksin. According to the report, a total of 1.6 billion baht in transactions have been made under their names.

The last group is companies owned by the corporations of the ousted premier's business empire. Over the last nine months, they've made transactions in excess of 118.9 billion baht.

In the first group, over the last nine months, Thaksin's daughter, Pinthongta Shinawatra, deposited approximately 1 billion baht, but has withdrawn more than 6.6 billion baht. Meanwhile, Thaksin's son, Panthongtae Shinawatra, deposited 16 million baht and has taken out more than 4.2 billion baht from his accounts.

At the same time, prominent politicians from the Opposition Puea Thai Party such as Karun Hosakul and Sudarat Keyuraphan have also made a number of major financial transactions deemed suspicious by the DSI as well.

Investigators pointed out that 10.5 million baht was deposited to accounts of prominent red-shirt leaders Veera Musikapong, and a total of 1.4 million baht was deposited to accounts of Weng Tochirakarn.

A large amount of money has also been wired to accounts of Kwanchai Praipana and Suporn Attawong.

  10. Nearly 80 unarmed civilians are dead.

    80 Unarmed civilians ?

But I'll leave you with a quote ....

"The ignorant and prejudiced hate the truth." 'jayboy'

    Amazing.

Am I correct, you believe that the over 80 dead were in fact all armed, with guns I presume ???

Is this what you are suggesting ??

No reason to presume he is suggesting all were armed. He neither said that nor did I presume that was what he meant, but simply that he was suggesting that not all were unarmed... or in other words, some were, some weren't.

Everything doesn't require a complete pendulum swing from one extreme statement to another.

An American arrested on charge of child molest

BANGKOK: -- A suspected American child molester was arrested in Phuket on Friday morning after laying low in Thailand for five years.

After cooperating with Interpol, United States Homeland Security and other agencies, tourist police apprehended fugitive Charles Todd Stokes, 45, at a hotel room, where he was found with a Thai boy, Colonel Panya Mamen told a press conference yesterday.

The suspect refused to speak to police, saying he would only talk to officials from the American embassy.

Stokes, who used to work as a teacher in Florida, had been charged with molesting children before he escaped to Thailand five years ago and later opened an English language school in Bangkok's Phra Khanong district, according to Panya.

Police had previously raided his apartment in Pattaya and found around 100 photographs of boys aged nine to 11, both in school uniform and nud_e, Panya said.

Man convicted of going overseas to have sex with boys

    Sun-Times Media Wire

    June 11, 2010

A former gym teacher was convicted in Chicago on Friday of traveling overseas to engage in illicit sexual conduct with as many as 70 young boys.

Charles Todd Stokes, 48, of Miami was found guilty after a four-day trial of traveling in 2002 from Chicago to Thailand, where he lived for several years, to have sex with minors, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's office.

The case was brought in U.S. District Court in Chicago because Stokes traveled from O'Hare to Thailand, with the jury finding he did so with the "significant purpose" of engaging in sex with minors, the release said.

Evidence at the trial showed Stokes engaged in sexual conduct with about 70 boys under 15, of whom about 30 were under 13 at the time, the release said. Two victims, who were 11 and are now 18, traveled from Thailand to Chicago to testify at the trial.

Stokes was arrested in Thailand in 2006, extradited to Chicago in 2007, and has remained in federal custody since.

Additional evidence showed he possessed thousands of photos of himself engaging in sexual conduct with minor boys.

Stokes, who formerly lived in the Miami area and taught in public school from the mid-80s until the late '90s, faces up to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 26 at noon by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer.

  12. Since the reds are always justifying everything on the basis of "double standards", this story just popped up and I found it ironic.

The Chiang Mai court today sentenced five men to prison for the murder of the father of a key PAD member in November, 2008. The five were among about 200 members of the Rak Chiang Mai 51 red group that surrounded PADs Wihok Radio community radio station, forcing it to close. One of the five convicted murders, Niyom Lueangcharoen, the chief guard of Chiang Mai 51, addressed the red shirts yesterday at Ratchaprasong.

So here we have a convicted murderer on the red shirt stage who participated in shutting down a community radio station because it didn't subscribe to their political views. I wonder if he is helping spearhead the peaceful red shirts at Thaicom today? Imagine people like this gaining power in the government here in Thailand.

What does a convicted murderer fugitive have to lose today by becoming violent or encouraging others to do so?

He might not be granted bail while he appeals the murder conviction.

    {facetiously written}

Thanks for the parenthetical clarification because one never can be quite sure what is allowable in this surrealistic appelate system.

Actually, that aspect IS allowed. The famous former mayor (godfather) of Bang Saen was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was still granted bail while he appealed the conviction. Unsurprisingly, he failed to show up for the follow-up court date and has not been seen since.

The "facetious" bit was only written to show I didn't really agree with the possibility.
