  1. I have Thai licence for car & moto, also NZ Licence, I have been in Cambodia near 2 years.

The Thai licence is OK, many traffic police ( Blue Uniform) will try it all on to relieve you of money.

Next year it will become law to have a Cambodia licence, you can buy one for $50.00 = 1 year - no worries, try Lucky Motorcycle on Monivong Blvd.

Every time I have an issue I say - no problem I have a friend - very High rank Military police man - and I go back to bike to get my mobile, every time they (profanity removed) - No No not worry, it helps that I do have a contact - however none have carried it thru, they threaten to impound my bike - so I say, no problem you talk to my friend and he sort you out, whereupon they (profanity removed( and all is forgiven for $2

They usually start at $15 to $20 fine - I get down to $2 or $3 then move on.

They are rapacious for sure, the best bit is if you see one leap out & you know you are not in the wrong, you can just hit the gas & drive around them, I have never had one try to follow and catch me.

Be staunch or lose is the game !

  2. I was just doing a financial work up on opening a processing facility for our Co in Cambodia, the shock caused me to look at Thailand again; to land and clear a 20 ft container at Sihanoukville costs $1,200.00 approx MORE, than to land & clear the same 20 ft container at Laem Chabang - the main Port between Bangkok & Pattaya.

The add on document costs are ludicrous $350.00 USD each box for Customs Clearance, the same $350.00 for Tax Evaluation at the same Customs House - a $15.00 Customs processing fee for each box, a surcharge of $300.00 for each box; it goes on & on.

I remain amazed at how focused some folks can get in times of opportunity !

Needless to say, my work in Cambodia is done - back to Thailand, and the deals being offered by the Thai Govt Investment Board are excellent - very professional response - Chalk & Cheese.

  3. It is easy if you really WANT TO, not just make noise like most do re stop smoking or drinking to excess !

Toughen up mentally & make a plan, reduce your point of focus to a small space or time frame, e.g. daily, all mental energy on "no drinking today" repeat - repeat etc

You need to replace the time you spend on the piss with other activities, hopefully some healthy !

You will find if you look at your group of friend / associates some are a negative influence, again toughen up and limit your exposure to them.

I took a few weeks to formulate these steps many years back, I smoked twice in my life - I went hard, 2nd time I was on 3 packs a day - I went to zero forever by these steps

Most important is if you want to mouth platitudes and wank on like a schoolgirl - Ooh I wish I could etc - you will fail - so TOUGHEN UP and WIN !

I am now in Cambodia, I was drinking way too much, 2 x bottles Scotch & Vodka weekly at home + beers, then out with friends, some days 12 - 15 beers in bars - 3 weeks ago I did it all again, stopped COLD - I have lost noticeable weight and I feel like a new younger me.

The difference in mental focus & energy is like a new game plan on life as it becomes a real prospect daily.

Feel free to let me know the results if you make it happen

  4. As you have the e mail address of all members, perhaps you could extend some small portion of your time to help not annoy us - this pop up asking to sign in to news letters every time I open an article is seriously annoying - I know you dont make any more money by spending a little time to achieve this - but it aint hard, you would be on it like a cat on a mouse if there was a quid in it what about a FIX please !

  5. I need to ship my 6 boxes of possessions that remain in C Mai to Phnom Penh, can you ask if anyone has any decent information contacts etc for a freight Co, or experience doing this ? Is it best to schlep by bus with said goods ? or will they get here intact with a reputable mover ? and good advice appreciated from anyone who has done same or has friends with experience.

    Cheers
  6. I concur with Downtown Al, I just finished a one year Ed Visa course at Pro Language, I have no hesitation to recommend it, I did a course prior at CMU - also good but short in time & issues re Visa`s now I hear. A friend who is fluent in Thai & reads & writes fluently also did Walen., 3 years is the maximum you an do an Ed Visa as he just ran out of time, got to leave the country & get a new start. Two of my classmates at Pro had done Walen & spoke disparagingly of it as the focus is on reading Thai - not talking / speaking - wrong way around IMO.

  7. I am gobsmacked re the BUPA comments, did you get your price from the UK ? I did that once & near passed on.

I am with BUPA direct from their office near JJ - I am 55 and have enough cover to have heart surgery, a friend had a double stent on the same level of cover as me - 400,000 Baht.

Cover in Private Room etc etc = all good acceptable options, choice of Hospitals

Total cost was 17 - 18,000 Baht a year ! the next level up is at 500k is only 22,000 P/A which I will renew to in June - not 100k ? ?

You also get a 10% rebate on renewal every year you do not claim.

I suggest you re look at the details & check carefully what ever you are getting - seems a mistake or 3 may be in play

  8. You need to book in advance to be sure of a seat, if you have no contacts here to make a booking on your behalf I suggest you leave a day at least after your arrival in Country, go to Hua Lamphong station ASAP after arrival & get a ticket, that is the only way to ensure you get on board, or fly - you can book online with Thai Air or Bangkok Air - easy and saves time & stress !

when special fare deals are on you can get 1 way for 1,800 baht = Bargain, Bkk Air also has a lounge for all class fares at all Airports !

  9. The above mentioned establishment is very good, they carry many well known brands & you pay accordingly, for basic no brainer stuff as you want you will get a good job done at a fraction of the price at either of the 2 watch repair stalls on the main strip thru the middle of Worowat Market, I have used one guy there on 6 or 7 occasions for 100 % good result, on the footpath on the left as you drive thru outside the main market building.
