I was in Vietnam too, between 1970 and 1972. Any Vietnamese I spoke with didn't support either the South Vietnamese side or the Russian/Chinese. They just wanted to be left alone. When I got back I joined a local anti-war group and supported the Vietnam Veterans Against the War group. I attended every peace group demonstraton I could find and they were peaceful until towards the end when the police got together to bang heads of the stragglers. I quickly learned to leave early.

All depends on how you define idiots.  These protesters are not the majority at those colleges who want to graduate now but can't get into their schools due to the protesters.  Blocking traffic, trashing the areas, etc great for them maybe.  In 1968 you didn't find me demonstrating, I had just finished 2 years in VN, had a lot of friends in the South Vietnamese Army.  They were fighting the Communists who wanted to rule the country and were supported by the Chinese and Russians.  The Palestinian people (non-HAMAS) allowed the radicals to set up camps, target Israel, and to carry out regular rocket attacks, then came October, guess Israel is tired of having this group set up offices and camps in hospitals and civilian occupied areas.  I think that the Muslims of the Middle East need to help fix this problem.

  3. I am offering my place to watch the game live, and also for the replay. It is on the 2nd in America, which makes the broadcast on the 3rd in Thailand. The game is not currently shown in the True program guide, but it certainly will be shown live. If there is interest I can post the time of the replay when it shows up on the True program schedule.

  4. If anyone in the Khun Han area is interested in getting together to watch the American football Super Bowl, starting at 6:30 am Thai time on Monday Feb 2, please let me know.

Don't worry, he has another seven and half year to accomplish what he want, he has just started.

With an ego like Trumps, don't expect him to stay in office for anything like a full term.

  6. I too, ended up building a house on my girlfriends property in Issan, two hours west from Ubon Ratchatani and a little over an hour south of Si Sa Ket. Not many foreigners in the area and no farang food nearly. Would be nice if I was into gardening or taking care of farm animals, but I have trouble lasting two weeks before going back to Bangkok for a couple of weeks.

Negatives are the boom boom bass noise on holidays and any other excuse for a party, which can go on day and night for days. No solution no matter how much money I throw at the problem. Also power often goes out when it rains, and the diesel generator I brought has a lot of power but makes enough noise to wake the dead. Need to save up to buy a Honda. The high speed Internet I finally was able to get works well until some one cuts the wires to sell as scrap, which can take weeks to restore. The last time they gave as a wifi modem that goes to Si Sa Ket, and works pretty well but is down about half the time.

Things are getting better with a new Central Plaza in Ubon and a new KFC in Kantalak. Suppose I'll end up living here full time when I'm too old to rock and roll.

If you are like me it's important to check out frequency of the loud music before choosing an area. We bought a small plot of land with many banana trees and a small Thai style house less than a kilometer away and in a much quieter away that might be useful as a refuge some day.

  7. Long Gun Bar - Soi Cowboy. Famous among ex-pats the world over.

For a real adventure, he won't forget, take him on a white knuckle ride in a pink taxi on any road or expressway in Bangkok (Adult Nappies/Diapers optional).

Also Suzi Wong on Cowboy, where the computerized tabs are a plus.

For another adventure take the motorbike taxi from outside Cowboy to Nana, where they can open it up on Sukhumvit. Get a motorbike from the stand on Sukhumvit for a more reasonable price.

Let me know if you want company.

  8. Does anyone know of a listing of the "Big Buddha" days in Issan so I can be elsewhere during those times?

My house is an hour south of Si Sa Ket and the bass from five giant speakers on a tower more than a story high at a house that is not that close has been booming for more than 24 hours so far. I rode past there on my bicycle early this morning and only a few people were around. I'm blaming the farangs to some degree because the music is coming from a farang built house that is providing the financing. I was happy to contribute 5,000 baht for new robes for the monks but don't care to contribute to the noise. My suggestions to pay to have the bass turned down have been ridiculed.

I've done everything I can think of to mitigate the boom boom of the music including using super block on the house walls, buying expensive double pane windows from Bangkok, using the best Bose noise- canceling headphones, taking small does of valium, etc., but nothing seems to help.

If I just knew when the local Buddhist holidays are it would help. The noise for weddings, funerals, becoming a monk, going into the army, blessing a house, etc. pose a problem that is harder to anticipate.

The Thaivisa calendar is helpful in general, but not in this case.

    Thanks,

    - Roger
