Dave in many cases it's the Thai Wife's bloody feckless Kids that makes many of us ask Why stay here. I sent hers to bording school, but they still get on my nerves 20 years late.No Work Ethic pisses me off bigtime
So sadly very true. The boarding school was a waste of money. If it had been Prem it would have been a waste of money. If you don't want to learn and don't go to school, what chance is there. Wagging from a boarding school was not a bad effort. No almost 16, unemployable, he breaks his mothers heart.
The kids are a killer mate paid for 2 for 7 years and there both as dumb as dogxxxx, breaks my heart but time to move on. Untill these people take education seriously there really is no hope for this country, give it 10 years maybe less the laughing stock of Asia

All the best mate, hope its good for you,i can hear south america calling after 9 years here,7 years of marriage the wifes gone back to her thai values [whatever they might be] this place has turned pear shaped, lack of education is the real killer;and when Asean starts i can only see it getting worse, all the best

Look to Australia ... It's mostly desert, and droughts last years. Australians live in a harsh climate and can help educate Thais in this regard, especially Aussies from rural areas.
Gutters around rooves in those drier areas should be a good place to start where water can be collected into a drainpipe and diverted to dams or tanks.
The scandanavians have very deep but not wide dams, this keeps the water in the dam cold and greatly decreases water loss. Warm water in the dam (heated by the sun because the dam is shallow) with wind blowing across the surface of the dam, dry out dams fast. So plants trees a little distance away to break the wind, dig the dams deeper and make the opening at ground surface level smaller.
The climate here feels like Brisbane, Queensland in summer ... and there we had a 4 year drought about 10 years ago that changed peoples attitudes to water usage and how to save water. I can feel it here in the North East, and I'm very worried for the Thais, being so heavily dependant on rice growing and stubborn when i talk about time to begin thinking of growing more that rice, sugar, rubber and palm.
There are many food grains that are drought tolerant ... please Thailand, get smart before you go hungry because rice fails one year.
And please Aussies from the land, teach Thais about water saving and growing alternative food crops. I found WeetBix in Ban Dung, and the girlfriends kids and their friends love them with milk and it keeps them full for hours
Mate i come from aus. as well been trying to teach the mrs. and her kids about saving water for 7 years!! they dont want to learn! only when the familys rice crops fail, they might start to listen, but i dought it.

Hello mate i can understand what you mean,i do my visa at Phitsanulok and get stuffed around every time, i had my 400,000 for marriage visa in a term deposit and even after getting the bank letter stating i had the money, they wanted me to update my bankbook, which i told him i couldnt, i then had to return to the bank and get the manager to speak to immigration,as you say what is the letter for?? and it cost 200 baht from memory, after hours of bs and delibaration my visa application was aproved, but what a hassle, i think it makes them feel important!!It's not just you. I go in (Phitsanulok) every year for the marriage extension with a three ring binder filled with everything they might ask for. They always seems to embrace the challenge of finding something I don't have so they can make me make an extra trip. Others relate the same phenomenon.
Instead of pasting a picture on my TM7 form, I digitized it and pre-print it in the correct place on the scanned form. I do this every year and everybody has been happy with it. This year, the officer said I needed loose passport pictures (never before asked for). I had them. He then pasted them over the pre-printed ones, which were identical in image, size, color and placement! Huh? Then they wanted a second picture of my Thai family (never before asked for). I had it. Then they wanted separate passport sized pictures of my wife (never before asked for). I had them.
I had my bank letter, obtained and dated that morning (because some have reported a two day old letter not being accepted), saying I had more than 400,000 in the account for more than two months. I had copies of my bank book. Although I updated the bank book that morning, the last activity was more than two months before, so that was the last that showed. However, I had an ATM slip, with copies, printed that morning showing a balance matching the bank book balance. It seemed I had exhausted them and my application was passed on to the supervisor.
The supervisor explained that I may have taken money out of the account during the two months and then put it back that morning before obtaining the ATM slip. Thus, I would have to go to the bank and make a 100 baht deposit, then get the book updated so that they could see if there was any other activity during the last two months. I explained that I had a bank letter saying the money was there for the entire two months. The supervisor explained that she needed this and there would be no further processing on my application until I got it. They had never before asked me for this. So I went and did as bidden. However, it is noteworthy that this was the Monday after a four day holiday, so I was stuck waiting in the bank for over two hours to accomplish this seemingly simple task. Now I rhetorically ask, if you must have a bank book with an entry the day of the application so that the officer can see by means of the bank book that more than 400K has been there more than two months, then what is the purpose of the letter? It is pure redundancy.
Look, I know they have the power, so I smile and carry on. But nobody will ever convince me or my friends here that some of these immigration folks must be bored and find outlet in pulling peoples' chains. Everybody is smiling and polite the whole time (on both sides), but you would have to be stupid not to see the game. My end of the game is to try to second guess them and be ready for every curve ball, and I am usually successful. I always have an extra big smile on my face each time I open my binder and casually return one of their curve balls. But sometimes they get pretty creative.
Of course somebody out there will accuse me of paranoia. All I can say in response to that is just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get me!

I agree with you my friend 100%I choose NOT to learn more thai as I would end up speaking my mind about all the BS that goes on here.
My lack of proficiency allows me to have a rant and no one knows what I am talking about. I can then calm down and nobody is any the wiser.
The language barrier here can be a wonderful thing
Ohhh so it is you who i see often speaking to yourself and ranting about something

I dont often post replies but get many laughs at reading other peoples posts, but had to reply to this, the way these people drive and ride motorbikes makes me snap on nearly a daily basis. Ive been here 7 years and still cant get my head around it, they are the most ignorant and stupid drivers i have ever seen, thats my rant finished thanks.

i live in phitsanukok and these checkpoints are useless as the cars just speed by and the people at the checkpoint just watch on, dont no why they even bother with them, is it just to make the people manning them feel important?

such a shame but hardly surprising the total lack of driving ability, road sense and common sense on the roads here is staggering, R.I.P to the victims

IF IT HAS AFECTED BUSINESS SO MUCH. WHY DOES THE THAI BAHT STAY SO STRONG AND THE STOCK EXCHANGE CONTINUE TO RISE?? CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN PLEASE.

I live in Phitsanulok ive been stopped and fined 200 baht for not having a licence, so i went and got a licence for bike and car. The police here do regular checks on the main road and last time i was stopped with my wife i showed the police man my licence which he then took and showed to the 30 to 40 young boys that were recieving fines, and said if falang can make licence why cant you? He then gave my licence back, all smiles and i was on my way, licences are easy to get and if you have one you should not have a problem.
