  1. The thing is Thais like Rucharee dont mind farangs getting ripped off.

Where is Rucharee to defend that intelligent and well thought out post, typical Thai.

    Dear Khun Rucharee,

Geez, do you guys really all believe this person is actually Thai? :):D

Ofcourse we do. We're all "typical farangs". We'll believe anything we read :D

  2. If Farang wants to come to Thailand, they should contribute to the local economy too.

Next time, they bring their own van, to visit their own bars, and drink their own beers, and perhaps even import their own girls (from the Philippines).

I agree. However I think the Tuk Tuks and Taxi drivers shouldn't see this as an opportunity to rip off farangs. If they are willing to accept reasonable fares, then the US should definitely contribute to the local economy by using the local transportation services.

  3. In the US tests are built under standards that 1) are "normed" on a population that the test is to be used, 2) are subjected to reliability (consistency) and validity (measure what they are intended to measure) research. Before test results can be discussed, we really need to know about these "tests"; but we don't. Anyone care to enter the discussion with this kind of info?

Yes.. and we all know how that is working out for the US :)

  4. In order to get the protest dispersed it seems like you would either need to arrest most of them or maim them. Otherwise they'll just pop back up and cause more trouble. My vote is for arresting them, but the police haven't shown the ability to do that yet.

agreed, they should set up the national stadium as a holding place. The leaders either neutralized or taken to unknown places for a couple of days.

So this is instead of democracy? sound to me like it is the south america under right wing generals you wish to have here.

Thaksin getting more press now and call for talks. At last, somebody who can end this crisis!

Thaksin could've ended this crisis by stepping forward a few weeks ago. Now? He's got nothing.

  5. I bought mine in the states a few months ago. Best compact HD video camera I've owned and worth every cent of the 200 bucks I spent.

I saw one on sale in IT City in fortune (rama 9) last week. It was severely overpriced though (11,900 baht).

Zi6's are more common in IT city and pantip, and more reasonably priced, but I bought and returned a Zi6 as the low-light performance was unforgivably BAD.

  6. Someone with an education and a decent job is still likely to be earning 15-25,000 baht or so, I mean Doctors in a public hospital would be lucky to be getting more than say 30k baht, so a teenager working at Mcdonalds in the UK could easily earn three times what a fully qualified doctor of 30 years does here.

It's true. I have spoken to quite a few doctors and nurses. A nurse from B&H Hospital that I spoke to only earned about 25k a month. The doctors I spoke to said they'd earn at most 35k a month at a public hospital, and around 45k at a private hospital.

On the other hand, I spoke to a Thai woman working as a flight attendant for Japan Airlines, and she was earning 50k a month.

But a friend of mine has a girlfriend working as an accountant. She has a Master's Degree and still only earns 10k a month, which she considers to be quite high.

So the disparity in incomes is pretty huge, and education seems to have little to do with it.

Most general practitioners I know at Samitivej hospital make around 400,000 baht a month.

A surgeon I know there tops around 800,000 to 1,000,000 a month easily.

Neurosurgeons at Bumrungrad come in at around 1,500,000 or so a month.

I've never heard of a Thai physician making only 45k. :)

  7. I don't see what all the fuss is about. Even without a previous license, the process is simple.

Show up at the Traffic Department with all the required documents at around 8am. Get your vision tested. Do the computerized test in English. Should be around 11:30 by then. Go grab lunch between noon and 1 and then head over to the driving test area.

Drive through their little circuit, stop at the stop signs, stop on the slope for about 5 seconds then resume forwards, and finally parallel park the vehicle properly. This concludes the test!

Head over to the waiting area and pick up your license by about 2 or 3pm.

    Simple!
