  1. If you really want to spend your retirement years here eating 30 baht noodles, watching Thai TV to save on UBC costs and live in the country with the chickens and pigs, go for it. It will be cheap.

But if you want to live higher on the hog, you will have to open the purse a bit more.

I know a number of foreigners living in Thailand who for one reason or other live like they are in poverty compared to back in their own countries. If this is a lifestyle choice, it is a bizarre one.

Live to the fullest potential your budget will allow. Why not? Retirement is supposed to be the culmination of and the reward for a lifetime of work.

I think any retiree who lives sooo cheap probably does it because of their percieved need.

If they had more money, don't you think they would live better?

  2. I liked his reviews too. His menu translator was very useful too. But he hasn't posted on TV in almost 2 1/2 years and there hasn't been a post to his website in almost as long.

Yes, I enjoyed Chanchaos postings here, and his great info on the local food scene very much. I was sad when he retired from his posting here, but he has a family to take care of :)

  3. I llike this one, LJW

This is close to the same spot, but from the Mai Sai side.

But, back on topic... One of the many buddhas within the main city of Chiang Mai

And one of the many fruit stall markets in Chiang Mai

Yes, she is standing at the start of the trail to the guesthouse. 20 years ago, this was the place where you could catch a small boat and cross the river, 10 years or so ago when the Tamruat moved in, they moved the boat downstream a bit, but it later died a natural death. I never liked the construction that went up there because I could no longer park next to the stream and kick back for awhile :)

  4. What stops you just adding a modified solar water heater.. Like the kind used for houses.. Keep the flow circulating.

I saw a one on sale outside a big hardware place for 30 something thousand and thought it was a cheap solution.

I've got a solar heater, but it does not help much.

  5. Drove over Nawarat Bridge and turned left down past Riverside & Goodview earlier today. They were putting sectional concrete walls along the edge of the road with sandbags behind it on the river side of the wall. This was near the bridge where it is at it's highest so maybe they are expecting some serious flooding coming or maybe they are being overly cautious.

I'm sure we'll know soon enough.

I drove by about 4pm today, and they were picking them up with a large truck. I thought about taking a picture, but too much traffic :)

That's not correct I'm afraid, in fact what they were doing was completing the run of concrete blocks from just North of the bridge to the Wawee coffee shop next to Riverside, I live three blocks away from there and just checked on my way home a few minutes ago.

Okay, sorry for my mistake, but it is the end of the season and I don't understand why they are still up, either

  7. I wouldn;t worry either unless your house or hotel is in a known area that is likely to flood.

To be honest though I think we're done for this year. Next: hot weather until the cool season starts. You heard it here first.

You said the same thing last year, but nothing happened....This year I think it is the same, no hot weather :)

  8. Chase them, run them off the road and teach them a valuable lesson. Afterall, no one else teaches these idiots responsibility.... I wish I could do that anyway.

Being a civilised person means we don't behave like these uncivilised idiots.... Take their plate number, report it to you insurance and police and let them handle it. Forget and chill out in time for the next incident...

I actually take joy in sitting at the cross walk when the lights red and no one is walking with cars behind me and others in the next lane still running the light, it's one lesson that is easily taught for whatever it's worth. What obviously concerns me most about others running those lights is that often a pedestrian may see it still green to walk at the last minute and rushes to cross and gets hit because others are running it..

I know it works too as I've seen others pull up and make motions to run it but stop and wait in the lane next to me until it goes green..

The 'what if...' reasoning you give can be used anytime, anywhere for anything ;)

  9. I am very surprised to hear your daughter say that she has no farang Ajarns. With English as her major, she should have one of the many farang Ajarns there with at least a Master's degree. And a new one each term or year,

I taught at CMU for a few years, and all of my students majored in English.

  10. Yeah, the ' Pickle King' had a war with me on SCT for a few years. I was named 'Ajarn' then. We fought about his racist remarks about the Falafel Lady. I also had a tussle with the photog, who talked way too much crap about everything I though... Anyway the photog is here as a fisherman ;) He doesn't want to continue it here, and that makes me happy :)

The Pickle King, well I hope he got what he was always asking for.... A thrashin :D

  11. Firstly, I don't disbelieve a word you say,my question is, how expensive is your water? Here in Maesa Noi I pay 4Baht /1000ltr. Last month 48Baht which will rise to about 150/170Baht in the upcoming dry time to maintain the garden.

If I've done my numbers correctly at my rate your using 1,000,000ltrs/mth. or 30,000ltrs/day.If me I'd be headed out to the meter, turn it off and check that your meter is not redlining when it should be doing nothing.Just a tip.

Well, I have a large garden, 3 waterfalls, and 2 fish ponds, as well as a pool. This month it was 4,500 baht. I can afford it, so no worrys about me. :)

you fill pool with government water w have same except pool and I know lots of people who have pools no one spends 4,000 baht a month on water unless their totally stupid or lying I suppose you empty the pool every week and waterfalls dont use a pump to recirculate water your talking nonsense

Our water use here is often over 2k.. Pool uses quite a bit tho not for the last couple of months as rains been filling it.

If he has ponds and waterfalls It doesnt strike me as impossible.. High yes but not impossible.

I think I probably do have some leaking pipes, but I just don't care much. :)
