  1. สวัสดีครับ / sawatdeekap,

Has anyone had Lasik eye surgery in Udon? If so, where?

Internet searches aren't revealing much and I'm hesitant to accept any doctor. I have been deemed "eligible" by two previous doctors back home, could likely get the paperwork if needed.

Seems I've been dreaming forever of simply being able to wake up and see everything.

  2. Sawatdeekap,

I'm in Chiang Mai for a month or two near Thae Pae Gate. After walking around today, then searching the forums, I've come up empty handed for a gym. Can anyone point me to a gym close by (within 1km or so)?

Just need DBs up to 25kilos or so and a squat or leg press. I visited a hotel recommended on another post (and near myself), but was told they no longer allow guests. I'll try and walk by tomorrow to grab the name for other folks.

    Thanks in advance!

  3. I jailbreak and software unlock with Pwnage Tool IPSWs / Ultrasn0w, it's okay there. Since Ultrasn0w supports all the basebands right now, that's also okay. It's more of a safeguard to prevent this from happening (noted though, all of my jailbreaks and unlocks since 3G and the original software, it's the first time this has happened) again, assuming not all basebands can be unlocked. On my last update from 3.1.3 to 4.0, I ran into a corrupted baseband (I posted my fix somewhere in this forum) which nearly bricked my phone. Long story short, the IMEI was different than my SHSH file, fixed them and flashed the baseband. Manually installed files from 3.1.2 and tried to set them through mobileterminal. Next ended up having to upgrade my baseband. I could restore, as long as tethered jailbreaks exist - or if not (seeing the way of the web based jailbreak) just to get past the emergency screen as long as I had an original SIM (or I saw somewhere a phonebook SIM will do the same).Long story short, it's just to avoid a potential problem in the future. I'm nearly certain it'd be a pre-paid SIM from AT&T in the United States. Also, I suppose now I'm just curious.

  4. I purchased my 3GS used while abroad. I know it was carrier locked and have a good idea it was AT&T (United States) since their the only official carrier. However, before I have my friend send me a pre-paid SIM is there any way to figure this out?

I'm doing it as a precaution against future activation issues. Thanks!

  5. Try Petcharat Mansions or Siam Mansion, right next to it. They used to rent from 350 baht per studio partly furnished with aircond.

For something closer to the city, try the one next to the Hatyai Palace hotel (I forgot the name) I think that they are serviced apartments.

    Thanks! Will check them out.

  6. Could someone point me in the direction of some (specific) monthly apartment rentals in Hat Yai? My keywords may be off, but I'm not finding much either on the forums or Google...most seem to be hotels? I'm not adverse to hotels, but typically find the "homey" feeling of apartments and residents more to my tastes.

Looking around 9,000 - 12,000, preferably with electric and water included. Has to have ethernet / wifi / some type of incl. internet access.

Also, I had read a post once about heading to some type of central area where cheaper (minus the daily breakfasts) rents could almost certainly be had. If someone knows of this off-hand, I'd appreciate it - can't find the post anymore : )

  7. Congrats on solving the issue. My two baht for future reference:

Happy English Martin - Spirit and blackra!n, though offering easy tethered jailbreaks, aren't compatible with a lot of the updates; i.e. if you use Spirit or Blackra!n future jailbreaks and unlocks are slow to come out, or don't work at all (ios4 being an example - citing from devteam blog). I always recommend using Pwnage Tool because of this. Documentation indicates the phones need to be tethered when the battery dies too, though on a previous 3GS w/Blackra!n I didn't have this issue. Don't know why.

Hardware unlock - I've never heard of a hardware unlock. I did Google it and some YouTube videos appeared (didn't watch them), so maybe it's possible. If it is...it could be a healthy market for all those bricked phones.

The german / cycling through languages is normal, for both factory unlocked and locked phones.

MHM - In case something goes heywire when you do your next update, would be good to note bootrom: Settings> General> About> Model on the iPhone. Or on a Mac in DFU mode Applications> Util> System Profiler. Also firmware under the same area and store on Cydia. Not saying they didn't change out hardware, I'm just skeptical.

Jailbreaks / unlocks are easy, when they work right. They're a nightmare, even for the technically inclined, when they don't. And it always seems at some point, something doesn't go right.

On another note, wasn't VOIP a feature that could be used for multi-tasking on ios4? Skype shuts down with a quickness when trying to do other tasks.

  8. Thanks! I appreciate the responses - great information.

Between hearing that things are relatively safe and the beaches of Songkhla aren't that great, I'm going to settle in Hat Yai for a month or so. It'll be a nice change of pace and places me closer for a 90 day visa run.

  9. I noticed a lot of people have issues with wifi, bluetooth, and generally bricking their phones during updates (going back to 3.0). Though I should probably create a blog post, here's my online contribution : )

I attempted to upgrade my 3GS, 4.11.07 baseband, 3.1.2 to iOS4 on OSX with iTunes 9.2. Ended up with no wifi, bluetooth, always searching. No matter how I tried to restore, the phone wouldn't recover (was stuck on searching). Updated plists so Apple / iTunes "would" sign 3.1.2 downgrade (iTunes 9.2 will not in stock form). Upgraded to 4.0, down to 3.1.3, 3.1.2, and every combination for 3 days. Used IPSW's I created from pwnage, that others created, and so on. In Settings - General - About there was no WIFI, BT, IMEI, ICCID, Firmware. Loaded on Windows (Parallels) with iTunes 9, thinking OSX/9.2 was causing a problem.

Since Ultrasnow (unlock) supports all the basebands, decided to restore an official 3.1.2 using Cyder2 for Windows (transfer Cydia stuff via USB). Grabbed my SHSH file from Cydia first. Loaded up iReb (Windows) and noticed my Mac and iPhone were stating different versions - IMEI was different than what my SHS file was. Fixed those then flashed the baseband, which failed. So, reading about basebands I tried resetting it (Selize has an article): loaded baseband files from 3.1.2 and tried to set them through mobile terminal = failed. So, since everything worked before the upgrade I concluded my baseband became corrupted.

So, the only way to completely clear and fix a baseband is to actually update it - wipe the existing one out completely. Downloaded an activated, upgraded baseband from a website (not sure if we can post links here) with iOS4, Cydia. Still couldn't install through OSX but loaded fine with WinXP/iTunes 9.

In searching for an answer, it appears this is quite common. 4.01 should be out soon, but given this has gone back to at least 3.0 though I'd post it somewhere. Hopefully Google indexes it.

  10. I've been living in Thailand (BKK and Phuket) on and off for the past year. I was thinking of moving to Hat Yai, only because it seems to be a larger and "livelier" city (in the sense there's more people = more places to eat, go, meet; not bars).

However, in reading about Songkhla lake and it's history, I'm become quite curious. There doesn't seem to be many posts about actually living in Songkhla though, mostly just references from people passing through. Can anyone provide any information (e.g. safety, traffic, ease of getting around - my Thai is barely passable)?

I saw that it's roughly 30 minutes from Hat Yai to Songkhla, and 2 hours to the beaches on the west. Is motorbiking safe? I suppose in terms of muggings and theft, had a motorbike in Bangkok which is just horrible.

Any info or resources would be appreciated. Will probably head down in August from Phuket Town.

  11. Apparently you can downgrade the baseband, depending on model and software. Just google "downgrade baseband".

Looks like redsn0w is going to work on a range of basebands, great news for people for unknowingly upgrade theirs.

  12. Is anyone using an unlocked and jailbroken 3GS with the new software? If so, could you tell me what you used to jailbreak it?

My understanding after reading everything was that ultrasn0w is the carrier unlocked, but redsn0w is only jailbreaking the 3G and 2G.

  13. Lickers, the name of the place is Rattana Beach. I imagine it's really loud.

I also saw a sign on the south Kata road that joins with Patak road two days ago for a monthly rental - my friend rented a place in the area last low season for 10-12,000 baht.

Lastly, on Taina road above 7-11 there's a guesthouse. I think, but am not positive, a few months ago they were renting somewhere in the same range. I stayed here once.

Best thing perhaps, is to walk Patak road. There are tons of sois with low prices.

  14. What type of website are you trying to build? A Drupal and CiviCRM combo can be perfect for some applications (most of the sites we build are a Drupal / Civi / Flash combo). It has a somewhat steep learning curve though and could be more than what you're looking for.

I agree with everyone else - Wordpress is a great blogging platform with tons of free customizable themes. It's easy to manage and update, and some hosting providers have automated installs and updates. Or, try building something with Blogger or Google sites to get your feet wet.

My two baht: I think you need to answer 1) What's the purpose of the website (e.g. static "about" information, share media) 2) Who's your audience and how they access it and 3) Who's managing / maintaining it?

  15. What's everyone paying for a unit of water and electricity?

I'm moving to Phuket Town next month (from Karon) and am doing some research. My previous apartment included everything.

The place I'm thinking of charges 5 baht for electricity and 20baht for water, after the first 15 units. I'm guessing I'll be somewhere between 200-500 baht / month (rarely AC, home cooking, TV, internet, daily showers) ?

The above info was based on another thread, which seemed to indicate the charges were also very reasonable (thread was in Pattaya though).
