  1. Hi Pool Pros,

I rented out this house with a decent sized dipping pool in the garden. The pool measures: 14 ft (L) x 7.2 ft (W) x 2 ft (H).

    pool.thumb.jpg.a4ce1bb7ed44ae0d8c80066408d31788.jpg

While there's no pump fitted in the pool, I can see plumbing leftovers attached to the pool.

Any suggestions regarding kind of a pump & filter required here to maintain sanitary water conditions? Also how often and for how long do I need to keep the filter running?

    Thank you.

  2. Hi,

I have a Fortuner bought firsthand from Toyota dealer (TBN) two years back. I've been performing routine maintenance around every 10K kilometers (changing engine oil, oil filters etc.). The car is clocking 37K kms now with the last maintenance done at 33K kms.

All of a sudden the communicator has started displaying a message every time I turn on the ignition.

    ty-engine.jpg.524291aa041b51e7b1045b717a0b69c2.jpg

Its coming up every single time I turn the car on. As you can see from the figures above, I'm quite far from the next maintenance cycle.

Should I be concerned and head for the garage?

    Thanks.

  3. I have AIS fiber at home and the connection is delivered via two components.

One small white box which I assume is the modem. The fiber uplink plugs into this one.

A second box which is the Wi-Fi router.

The modem and the router are linked using a lan cable with RJ45 connectors. The cable plugs into the WAN ports of the router.

I'm trying to replace this default router (came with the connection) with a better one from ASUS.

When I unplug the uplink cable from the default router and plug it into the WAN port of the Asus box, i get an error message that the "ISP's DHCP is not functioning properly."

Has anyone else successfully executed a similar configuration? Any suggestions for me?

    Thank you.

  4. Hi,

If you're on Non-B visa and working in Thailand, do you need a re-entry done to cross over to the border market of Myanmar or to Don Laos just for a day trip?

I was in the area more than a decade back on ED visa and did the crossings and I don't recall having to do re-entry - but things may have changed now..

    Thanks.

I just wanted to post before the guys come in to say the online reporting website works every time with no problems.

Here's my 2 cents, from personal experience:

    • If you haven't registered your place of residence (TM. 28 and TM. 30) with immigration, online 90-day reporting does not work.
    • Once you register, it works every time (granted, the web interface leaves a lot to be desired).

You may be able to find something in aquarium/fish shops. Have you considered Black Soldier Fly Larva? If you google BSFL trap it will show you how you can get rid of organic waster, reduce the fly population and have protein for your dragon.

Thanks for your response. I don't have a suitable place to breed the BSFL, without stinking up the house - so my only option is to get fresh supplies from a shop. I've tried several aquarium shops - none seem to keep supplies of crickets / other worms.

The Fire Stick is fine to use in Thailand, provided you deal with the network IP/country issues with Amazon and other content.

But as to the hardware differences, the Fire Stick Basic Edition is the non-Alexa voice control version Amazon sells for general international use. You can set it up and use it with a Thai internet address, and download and install various apps including the international version of Amazon Prime Video (but typically not the U.S. content ones). And no Alexa voice control.

Or, the regular current Fire Stick version with Alexa that's meant for countries like the U.S., UK, and others where customers can have country-specific Amazon Prime accounts. To use the regular stick to its best, you need to set up an Amazon account in one of those countries and register the Fire Stick to that country. And then to use it here properly, use a VPN service or DNS redirect service to make the Fire device think you and your device are located in that country.

The VPN can operate in the settings of your wifi router, if your particular router brand has a built-in client for VPN protocols like OpenVPN or PPTP, or, as noted above, there now are several different commercial (paid) VPN services that have apps you can install and use on the Fire Stick itself that will give you the proper IP/internet address and pave the way for the streaming content you want.

As long as you're using a current (2nd gen) Fire Stick configured to operate via an Amazon supported country, the device itself works very well as a streaming device. And because the Fire platform is basically just a forked version of Android, you can sideload many many regular Android apps to use on the Fire Stick. The current 2nd gen Fire Stick is quite responsive and works fine for general home use.

Thank you. This is super helpful.

Do you require VPN connectivity while registering the stick? The reason I'm asking is ... I've been using my dad's Amazon account, which is registered against an address back home and I'm (surprisingly) able to view Prime content not available in Thailand. If I register the stick against this account, does that do the trick or I've got to explicitly have my IP located in the same country.

Most boxes claim they can play 4K but can't play Netflix in HD. From what I have been told, there are reasons why but the primary reason is they are not DRM certified boxes. The Chinese manufactures just don't like to pay the required fees.

Some people believe it better to buy the cheapest box at B2000 or so, and when it dies they just buy another.

I believe you get what you pay for. I want a TV box that works. I don't want to spend hours trying to figure out how to make it work.

That's why I have a Nvidia Shield and a SkyStream Two. Nvidia has the reputation of being the best streaming box. IMO it is and it works right out of the box.

There is always a down side. The Nvidia runs The Real Android TV OS and Google restricts the Apps you can install on it. Only Apps on the Android TV Play Store install easily. Yes, you can get around it but that requires time and know how every time you want to install a new App or APK. Nvidia has customer support via email.

The second downside is the price.  $225 delivered from Amazon.

The SkyStream Two is awesome box as well. Designed  in the US and the specs are up there with the Nvidia.

The difference is SkyStream comes loaded with 90% of the streaming Apps you will ever need. SkyStream updates the Apps when links go bad and replaces them with new working links. All at no charge. It's truly a lazy man's TV Box.

SkySteam is also totally open and allows you to install anything you want. They have email and telephone support.

If you want to compare the the quality of the two, they are about the same. That includes picture quality and build quality. These two boxes are designed properly and do not run hot to the touch.

I forgot to mention, if you are into gaming, Nvidia is the way to go. Gaming is their thing.

The price of the SkyStream is the same as the Nvidia. My timing was good and bought the SkyStream 2 weeks ago on sale at Amazon for $202. delivered.

If you are in this price range, you will be happy with either of those TV Boxes. If not, this box   MAGICSEE IRON+ 3GB/32GB is available on Lazada for B2990 and has the same specs as the 2 above. It may be worth the time to check it out. If it doesn't meet your needs you can return it within 7 days.

If you have any other questions, let me know. Good luck..

Awesome. Thanks for your super helpful reviews. I did some research myself and shortlisted the very same ones you've mentioned here. Like you said... you get what you pay for ?

Google chrome cast is what we use. Just watch on our phone or ipad and stream to the tv via wifi to the chromecast!

Or are you talking about something different?

Thanks for your suggestion. I have Chromecast as well - but I'm looking for something that's not dependent on the phone and can be operated independently, with the possibility of enhancing functionality with downloadable apps.

Those Panasonic plugs are unusual but the recessed pins on the backplate look quite standard:

    6c-82mm-speaker-connectors-made-for-Pana

So some ordinary insulated lugs should fit and anyone with a crimping tool could attach them to some suitable cable.

And of course anyone with some insulating tape could splice extra cable onto your existing plugs.

Thank you - that's a great idea. Don't have a crimping tool - but I can carry out the splicing by myself.

Should I expect any degradation in quality due to the splicing?

  11. Hi,

Has anyone used the Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote in Thailand?

    1. How was your experience in terms of the content available?
    2. This Amazon page says that the Fire TV stick is only supported in a handful of countries and you can use something called a Fire TV Stick Basic Edition in Thailand. However, a large number of sellers on Lazada, Pricezaa etc. are selling the Fire TV Stick (full edition). So I'm assuming it must work the same here. Any comments on that?

    Thank you.

  12. Hello,

I'd about to finish off my car loan in a few months. Can anyone kindly advise me on the process for completion of the loan? Let's say I pay up the final installment... what happens then?

In my country, here's what we need to do:

    1. The bank issues a clearance certificate and hands over the blue-book / smart-card.
    2. We have to take that and file a report at the local police station.
    3. Take documents from 1 & 2 to the Land Transportation dept. and submit for change of ownership.

What is the process for Thailand? When I bought the car through financing, it was already transferred to my name - which now appears on the blue book, except that the blue book was retained by the bank. In this case, do I need to have any further interaction with DLT for transference of ownership?

Those who've gone through a similar motion, kindly advice.

    Thank you.

  13. Hello.

A male black Labrador (mixed-breed) has taken refuge at my home since last evening. It was pouring like crazy and the dog was running around trying to find shelter. It followed my car and came into my home. It appears to be well-fed and well-trained and is well conversant in English :)

Once it stopped raining we took him out several times hoping that he'd figure out the way to his home - but whenever he came across street dogs he got scared and refused to go further.

We live around Soi 24 of Moobaan Summakorn. If the rightful owner sees this post, please contact me here. I'm not comfortable with posting my phone numbers / email address in a public forum - so I guess this is the only way of communicating.

I'll come back later and post a couple of pics of him.

    Cheers,

    Joe

P.S. He's dirty as hell from running around in all the muck and I'm going to give him a thorough scrub. The owner needn't worry - I got two other large dogs :D

  14. Hello,

Reviving an old thread - but this seems to be the most relevant place. Do you guys have any idea about the price of ready made filters like this, if I'm not upto making one on my own at this point? planemad's idea of the 350B plastic box sounds terrific and I'm going to get my hands dirty sooner or later with it.... but for now I'm trying to get a heads up about the prices before I head for Chatuchak.

I watched a whole bunch of videos on YouTube regarding these filters and seems like the most convenient way of making one would be to introduce some sort of seive like containers inside the plastic box , with each container holding a different filter medium (sponge, charcoal, gravel etc.). This makes cleaning the filter a lot easier too, as all you need to do is pull-out a specific container. The water in these filters flows sideways as opposed to planemad's top-down approach.

My question is, do you have any suggestion on "what" can be used as these filter media containers if I am to stick them into that 350B plastic box? I was thinking on the lines of those netted plastic shopping bags, but I wonder if they will fit in smugly into the box. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Joe
