  1. I always wonder why these criminals. Make there homes in Thailand? sic

Obviously they find it easy to leave the US undetected by US law enforcement agencies or US immigrations ... or they know who to slip a little tea money to become "invisible" to US authorities. The same apparently applies to European "entrepreneurs" and those farang police.

Once again it's up to Thai police to do the work of farang police & immigrations.

Hardly...if you read the story they left under assumed names and fake passports. Presumably if they had used their real identity they would not have evaded US justice...

  2. Rubbish.

It may have something to do with a high % of farang expats, but Thais???

2 wine gums and a sniff of the barman's apron and they are 3 sheets to the wind.

Maybe the headline ought to read.....

Thai POLICE voted heaviest drinkers in the world. (of all police forces).

And by the way..... there are only 44 countries in the world now?.... Russia is moving fast.

Must not hang out in the isaan villages...those THAI folk drink so much Lao Khao daily they have a pretty high tolerance. First thing in the morning a shot or two and in the evening drink till the money is gone or the shop closes. And still able to stumble home....

  3. Maybe they could see how it's done in other countries. Pull them over whilst they're driving, wait in unmarked cars outside clubs.

I don't know about most countries but you only see checkpoints in the UK for large trucks so they can get them off the road but they can still be pulled over anywhere if needed.

I have noticed in my area a policeman stood a few 100 metres before bike checkpoints to catch those who u turn.

Didn't someone go on an expensive trip to South Korea and say they wanted to copy them. How do they deal with this

Agree with all these comments. When the police just sit and wait for crime to come to them like is done here, you get what you get. If they actually patrolled the streets like police should do, then they might catch these types. Of course all the TV crew will yell Nanny State, but do we really want these drunks alluding detection?

  4. "over 20 staff were perched on the concert stage structures to install lighting equipment"

Might be a clue as to why it happened??

Exactly what I was thinking. Was it designed to hold 20+ individuals, probably doing the work of one guy, with 19 or so watching? Also, inviting one or two bands from neighboring countries would hardly seem international. Maybe regional, but again wanting to play something up that probably isn't deserving such attention. Not to mention, using an international name like M TV productions when they aren't related at all.

  5. Learning a language and being somewhat fluent in it requires practice with speaking that language on a continual basis. Speaking it only in a classroom setting for an hour or two a week will not get you proficient. Hearing the language spoken on a regular basis is essential. The Thai government misses many opportunities to allow students a chance to hear the spoken language such as having foreign movies shown on television with Thai voice overs rather than being televised in their native language with Thai sub-titles. Most students also are embarrassed to let peers see them speak English outside the classroom. Thai cultural pride is at the root of many reasons why students do not become more fluent in English even after taking classroom instruction in the language for many years.

  6. This is tradition, probably in the old days it took longer to get relatives to come over.

Now this is one tradition that I would not break with as it would be a huge problem. If it is for yourself that is ok but for a Thai its real important.

Agree. I have been to four funerals in my time in Thailand. Two in BKK and two in Isaan. In BKK the body always lied in state at a temple but always for 3 days. In Isaan the body stayed at the house and then moved to the temple on the 3rd day for cremation. Gambling all day and night took place at the Isaan funerals as police look the other way during this time. Agree that it is an opportunity to get donations for the grieving family and the local wat monks but also tradition to try and help the family through the grieving process.

  7. It seems like Thainess and a lack of consciousness about marketing and service has run this dinosaur airline into the ground. This is a wacko set of priorities. Thais leader should be focusing on cutting costs such as the layers of fat in management. Particularly the retired military and their payrolls. Those who never show up for any real work.

The improvement of service, on time factors, reduction of checkin times, airport facilities, better rewards points systems and more efficient service oriented training should be higher up the priority food chain than this "Thainess" thing, whatever that is supposed to be. Maybe someday, some editor who doesn't ramble around and log in with tripe, can offer a reasonable explanation of "Thainess."

The pooyai has spoken and no one will disagree. Get it.

Exactly. He is only stating what his Thai bosses in government, who can fire him at will, want to hear. As soon as his idea screws them up even worse, if possible, then they'll be loking for another Thai patsy to continue running it into the ground.
  8. The TOT spent Bt200 million to hire a private company to make software to prevent the children from accessing to pornographic sites, the panel was told.

How come this little caveat was hiding. Of course, if the things are only many to be used at school, a network based solution could have been more than feasible.

True but then the school staff wouldn't be able to continue their porn surfing...
  9. The free refills is kinda neat, for us non-Americans something new; but someone please explain to me, if you get free refills, why would you order anything but a small drink?
Maybe so you don't have to keep going up to the refilling station every couple minutes....
  10. Everyone loves these letter of the law guys - so much fun.
Exactly. Perhaps too much jealousy. Stop worrying about what others are doing and do something for yourself. Get off your high horse judging others. It frankly is none of your business what these folks are doing. If they want to take the risk then that is their option.
  11. That's pretty messed up. Are the economies back in their home countries that bad?
if you are that concerned maybe you should check it out, maybe even ask some employment agencies in those home countries. I say leave these folks alone. You have no idea what their situation is and frankly it is none of your business.

  12. My 5 year old daughter speaks both Thai and English very well. My wife and her mom, who lives with us, speak Thai with her almost exclusively while I speak only english with her. She also attends a bi-lingual kindergarten program, and has for 2 years now. As you have said, at a young age they are like sponges and absorb the language very easily. I'm sure you won't have any problems.

  13. With all that rushing around, speeding and doing the dumbest things when driving, yet they still manage to come late for EVERY SINGLE meetingbiggrin.png

That is because they are seldom rushing to get to work...noodle stands, karaoke bars, shopping malls...definitely

  14. Entirely believable, the OP got home at 1am so probably the last flight from Bangkok, lights would have been dimmed, passengers would have taken had a couple od drinks and taken naps, have caught that same flight far too many times, it's essentially night flight conditions. Not difficult to accomplish what is claimed.

I think it would be, especially in business class, where the area of the plane is small and the number of passengers more omitted and the number of staff usually quite high. For someone to get in there unnoticed and open the overhead bin, open a notebook case, remove the computer, iPad, and cables, substitute magazines, and then wander down the isle and back to their seat or own bag unnoticed seem improbable to me.

As for what the airline can do in such situations, not much I would imagine. Otherwise it would be a nice way for anyone to get new electronic gear and just about anything else right. If the op filed a police report with the hkg authorities he should consider filing an insurance claim if he has an appropriate policy.

However, the story, if true or not, is a good reminder to at the least, just check one's bags maybe 20 minutes before landing to see nothing is amiss because if there is, the perp and the goods would still be on the plane. I like the plastic tie idea too but a little bit of a hassle...small locks would seem to do just as good.

Who says this happened while standing at the overhead bin? Could have easiy been taken back to their seat and exchanged for magazines. Who would have noticed it not being his bag except the victim, and if he was in toilet or sleeping....

  15. Don't people around the world get married everyday? Just yesterday there was a wedding in our estate and it hasn't made the world news yet. Some 26 yr old American lad gets married and it's world news <deleted>.
that American lad happens to be one of the richest men in the world...that may have something to do with it making the news...jealous are we?
