  1. Actually tried Glacier before - 2 days, 4 phone calls and no water!!!
    The tried POLESTAR
    Here's my review ...
Tuesday - Call at 5pm. 2 crates can be delivered. Ok, sweet. Yes we can deliver tomorrow about 10 am.
Wednesday - Call 1pm. Can you deliver by 2:30pm. We will deliver water today.
Call 3:30pm. Will you deliver today, because I have a meeting? YES.

Call from POLESTAR Driver's Friend who can speak ENGLISH??? 4pm - What is the number in my crate of water? I don't know. We will deliver today. The staff in the office did not understand.

I called POLESTAR Driver's Friend who can speak ENGLISH??? 10:30pm - Where is my water? They don't know, will call staff and deliver between 8-9am.

I Called POLESTAR Driver's Friend who can speak ENGLISH 9:40am - Where is my water? I want it delivered by 10:30am. OK, they will call staff. They(the office) don't understand. I am a new customer.

I called POLESTAR Driver's Friend who can speak ENGLISH 11:15am - Where is my water? The staff goes to Samoeng so far away! I said I don't care, when I called you last night you said early this morning. It will be delivered today.

I Called POLESTAR Driver's Friend who can speak ENGLISH at 3:40 pm - Actually can you go to 7-11 and buy water? Talk to your reception? I am NOT anything to do with POLESTAR but just a friend of the driver.

NOW I JUST GOT HUNG UP ON BY POLESTAR - AFTER 7 MINUTES OF EXPLAINING IN THAI, MY PROBLEMS ABOUT NOT GETTING WATER, TALKING WITH OTHER NON POLESTAR PEOPLE ABOUT TRYING TO GET WATER. THEY HUNG UP ON ME. WILL NOT DELIVER WATER!

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TYPE OF BUSINESS THEY ARE RUNNING. I WANT TO RATE ZERO BUT I CAN'T.

When will the simple crates of water be delivered. Who knows??? They sure know how to look after new customers.

  2. Facebook put it together a couple of days ago. He wasn't going along the highway. Witnesses reported speeding from the old city going north so T-boned the guard rail.

Most normal people would have slowed down coming to the intersection. But this guy hit a girl on a motorbike and slammed into the guard rail concrete blocks. Speeding? Just a little and so tough he didn't need a helmet. Drunk? Who knows, probably didn't breathalyze him, couldn't blow in the bag. Dead? Yes.

It's a 50km per hour road. Do the correct speed and everything is avoided and hundreds of people don't have to pay to repatriate you. Oh by the way, buy insurance.

  3. Well here is a can of worms!

Congestion tax like anywhere else - fail.

Extra lanes - could work but hard to implement. And red truck only lanes, forget that they make their own lanes enough already.

The whole thing about Chiang Mai is that it is there already, and without bulldozing the whole place and starting again. then seriously, all you've got to do is work with what you have. It's not the worst. Things like making Nimman a clearway between 4pm and 8pm, with cars being towed away instead of clamped and still blocking lanes.

Tourists, Chiang Mai has lots and that will not change, so deal with it. Many of those tourists come from places with very different driving conditions, they forget they need to drive Chiang Mai style.

And there are so many other points you could make!

  4. There is a big spanner in the works - Russians, Koreans and Brazilians get 90 days visa exemption straight up. They are generally the ones with the issues. Those on 30 days visas, generally don't have time to play up in between visa runs!!! So all this chat about 30 day runners is a waste, when the problem is these 90 days guys who really are playing up.

Russians get 30 days, not 90 days.

    Sorry Mario,

I thought that it was 90 days, but I checked again and found it wasn't. Sorry for the confusion.

    90 DAYS
    1. Argentina
    2. Brazil
    3. Chile
    4. Republic of Korea
    5. Peru

    Thank you.

  5. Songkran is an average week on Thai roads but actually a better week statistically because of the number of kilometres people are driving compared to normal.

When "someone" realises what needs to be really done to combat road fatalities then there may be change. Until then, the baht will get you out of any problem.

Drunk drivers should get an automatic night in Thailand's finest jails. Then second offense a week in lockup. This is on top of current fines and suspensions.

And simply should setup breath testing at the ends of local drinking streets. E.G. Nimman, Tha Charng and Loy Kroh in Chiang Mai. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel. It might even raise more revenue than the bars are paying to keep the police away.

This may seem simple but will never happen. This is Thailand and no one really wants to save lives despite all the talk and horrible photos they post everywhere.

  6. Have been considering it. Would rather listen to a lecture on God's work than a bunch of drunks at half time any how. Not a Christian just a Seahawk fan.

    Down with the Broncos.

    Edity

Yes I know drunks are charming witty and intelligent. Been there done that. Boring is more like it but can't convince them of that.

I'm not a drinker myself, esp starting at 6 am (but I do remember the days I was finishing around then, but not too clearly), nor do I have any ill will towards any religion Actually I had a lovely Christmas with a Hill tribe village this year and have even spent Christmas eve in a church in Yagoon (as well as one Bethlehem). My problem was that they charged us for a seat to watch the game and then made us be quiet and pray or leave the room. There were also quite a few other people not amused and they were well aware of it but I don't see in this years ad any mention of religious activities or affiliation.

I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say to this thread, please respond legend23.

Well junglechef, I enjoyed my Super bowl along with 110 others. Some happy and some not so happy with the result. About the bait and switch prayer meeting, well we did say a short grace before getting into a great feed while we watched the game.

No one ruined the game, no loud or abusive fans just lots of people having a good time. The halftime break was a few minutes hearing about the North American in a North Korea jail and about Rodman's comments, and then on with the halftime show. Why did we have the chat, because our broadcaster had a two Thai guys telling us what was happening.

Everyone happily observed the "No Alcohol" request and almost all will be back next year. We even had some randoms turn up who were staying in the hotel and they really enjoyed chatting with everyone at my table. Lots of new friendships made I think.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Super Bowl in their own special way. I loved it , of course I would have loved a closer game, but it was nice to see a young man and a massive defensive effort over come the best attack in the land. As I always say, if the other team doesn't score they won't win the game.

So, will we see you next year at The Empress???

  9. When I go to Duke's, I have eaten pizza there about 15 times, I have told friends the pizzas are awesome and they have concurred. I have even converted people to BBQ sauce pizzas. They loved them. Over a one week period. I suspect my friends ate there about 8-10 times and pizza was always on the table. These guys were American with American appetites.

And for around 250B you can't beat the value! Other Pizzas here are poor in comparison.

But I would like to give these guys a go, too!!!

  10. KRS1,

Where am I asking for money??? Can you please quote that??? As I can't see it.

I said "I won't say too much here but if you send me a personal message I will give you all the details you want."

I know for communication in Thailand you need to try and read between the lines, but I am simply saying, "I will give you the FB page of the place and a contact number, that you should donate to, I am not saying give me money and I will give it to them." People can then talk with the director there and then decide, or better still go and visit.

All the pictures are sitting on my Facebook for my friends to see, not that most of them need to because they have actually seen me in action anyway.

I am moving into CM city soon and I would welcome sitting down for a coffee and explaining what I do, showing you "proof" of my work and chatting about life in this great city. I am a Christian and I try to live that our through my life.

    Let's talk about this.

  11. Hi everyone,

It seems my 14 posts aren't enough to give me credibility on this forum. Maybe you need to meet me, look at my Facebook or come and see the hundreds of hours that I actually "DO" stuff instead of sitting on here and posting comments about people.

I was going to just going to send this to hellodolly, but KRS1 you can read it too.

I haven't been on Thaivisa for a long time and I wanted to give you a bit of a picture of what I do here.

I have been volunteering in a foundation in Hangdong for all this time, and when I have holidays from my volunteering in Hangdong I have taught English in Surin for friends over there.

I have not "worked" in 3.5 years and I have used all my own money to support my living expenses in Thailand while I have been here.

I have been teaching English to kids in schools, uni students, other foundation members and other community members. I have been in the community helping clean up rubbish. Every Saturday, I drive and help collect kids for a weekly Kids program where kids can come and be kids, have some fun and learn some things. I help with lots of extra activities around our foundation, I go to a lot of community events and help and encourage. I have given up a lot to come here and serve Thai people, tribal people, farangs, Burmese people, Lao people, let's just say Asian people! I have people all over Asia wanting to me to visit them because they have been impressed with what I do.

I connect with many people in Chiang Mai, I am connecting with many foundations in Chiang Mai and the rest of Thailand, and soon this will only increase dramatically.

In Mae Sot there are approximately 10 refugee camps, 80 schools, 1 massive clinic and dozens of orphanages and a heck of a lot of foundations serving them. I personally have connected with 2 orphanage/schools and the first is now receiving enough support and has got enough buildings and I am slowly trying to work with them in getting them registered as a school with the Thai Govt. The second is a lot less fortunate with raising external funds, but it does have a much greater need, so I am working with someone who wants to make a sizable donation to the work there, so I will make the connection and see the child benefit.

This is only two of the huge numbers of people down there. Look, I am no expert in development, but I have had a little bit of training in how to find out what the real needs of a community or organisation are and I have since the waste of millions of Govt bahts when funding programs have not actually addressed the people's needs.

You know something I love Thailand, I want to live here and serve the Thai people the rest of my life, I want to see Thai kids given the greatest opportunity to help themselves be the best they can be. Have a look at my posts they are all there only to try and help people. Why don't you stop judging people and get out there and do something instead of just helping yourselves.

I am willing to sit down and have a coffee and explain more about what I do, if you want to see me in person, let's get together and chat about life in Chiang Mai. I love it here and will be around here for a long time.

    Thanks!

  12. CMX1980,

I am a volunteer here in Chiang Mai and have been here for nearly 2.5 years. My plans is to volunteer in CM for much longer.

I have a lot of connections in and around CM and I would say most are doing a fantastic job and would relish receiving any such donation, cash or goods.

But I also have connections in Mae Sot at an orphanage/school. And can I tell you if you could help them out it would be extremely beneficial. I won't say too much here but if you send me a personal message I will give you all the details you want.

I have visited this orphanage with many of my friends and the man running it has given EVERYTHING to make it happen. Even his own salary goes back into keeping the place going. I can't say how much I admire this man for what he has done, with basically nothing.

    Thanks!

  13. Just this last April, I went from my temporary(1 year) to 5 year licence for both car and motorbike.

    Documents required.

    Medical Cert 40B

I think I just copied my whole passport twice to cover all bases - I got some of it back, but better safe than sorry.

Work Permit - I have one, so no need for anything else. I don't know about any coloured books. I took two WP copies also.

    Old Drivers Licences and copies.

    Aussie Licence and copy.

They have a photocopy person, but make the copies beforehand as it saves hassle and breaking the stride.

Go upstairs with the above paperwork, skip the general info line and go straight to counter 21 the very last one on the right(actually the first one). Just past the info desk.

Say hi to the lady and be polite. I gave her all my forms and she packaged them all up, she called the info lady across and gave me a number. I paid 900 ish baht(renewal for both and 200 for the plastic licences).

I waited a bit to pay, but all up 30 minutes go to woe and I have 2x5 year licences.

If you take the time to be prepared, it is worth it.
