  1. I have been to the Phnom Penh Safari twice and have seen all these shows.  I didn't see any abuse.  These animals are trained and are rewarded when they perform.  I saw the handlers constantly giving treats to the animals as they performed their tricks as they were trained to do.  They did not beat them or whip them, instead the animals were rewarded.

Are you being abused when required to write a story and then compensated for the story?  Are you being abused if you are fired for not writing or for writing a poor story?

I thought all the animals, including the tigers, looked healthy and were given ample space to live in.  The water that surrounds their habitat is the same as their natural living conditions.  I also saw containers of clean water in all the living areas.

This is fake news and an attempt to create controversy where none exists.

  2. You said you got a lao visa.  So do you have a Laos visa to visit Laos, or did you get a Thailand visa in Laos?  If you have a Laos visa to visit Laos, then it is better to cross the boarder into Thailand and back to Laos than to get an extension - tourist visa extensions are expensive in Laos.

If you are asking about a Thailand visa you got in Laos, then some of the replies are probably correct.

  3. After living in Thailand for several years, I moved to Vientiane - and I love it here. Everything here is easier, especially getting a visa. Although life is a bit more expensive here, Vientiane is a very westernized city. It would be easier for you and your family to make a life in Laos - as far as visas go - than for you to live in Thailand. Consider making the move - I'll never live in Thailand again. But, if you plan to marry, do it in Thailand - it is very difficult for a foreigner to marry a Lao girl in Laos - it is possible, but it can take months or years to get approval.

  4. You are a US citizen, all you need to do is go to the US Embassy and get a financial statement notarized. That is acceptable proof for any Thai Immigration office, Embassy, or Consulate.

You state what your income is on the affidavit (you can put any amount), and the US Embassy asks you if it is true, you say yes, and they notarize it. They do not ask you for proof of the stated income (unlike other country's embassies).

So don't worry about proving your income, just get the notarized affidavit and you are good to go.

  5. I am another user that enjoys Windows 8.1. When I upgraded from 7 to 8, my computer ran faster and was more reliable. Not nearly as many lock ups, etc. Then 8.1 added some features bringing us back a little towards the 7 era.

Personally, I like the tile concept, especially the live tiles that tell me whats going on without needing to open the application, like weather, emails, Facebook, etc. The metro design is essential for those using a tablet. Personally, I enjoy Android on my Samsung Note 10.1 2014 tablet, and Windows 8.1 on my HP laptop. When my laptop dies (going on 5 years now) I'll get one of those hybrids that run both Android and Windows with a touch screen.

If you want to keep up with the latest software, you need to adapt to the new designs and methods. Otherwise, just keep using your old Atari.

  6. I believe he's referring to Schwab bank accounts which do refund fees, but they're only available for Americans - http://thepointsguy.com/2014/02/the-top-11-checking-accounts-for-avoiding-foreign-atm-fees/

That link references Citibank ATMs having no fee which used to be the case (e.g. by the Asoke interchange in Bangkok) but not anymore I've heard.

I also use Schwab bank and enjoy the ATM fee refund and free debit transactions- I pull money from Bangkok bank ATMs, UP to 25,000 per day, pay the 150 fee, then I get it back at the end of the month.

  7. The most dangerous time of day to drive, here in upper Issan, is just after dark. There are many motorbikes and tractors on the road without rear lights or head lights. The tractors move so slow that once you see them in your own head lights, it is too late to stop, so you must be always driving toward the center of the road just in case. OK, so I understand they may be too poor (or stupid) to put lights on the tractors, or repair the lights on the motorbikes, but I really don't understand the motorbikes that have working lights, and they purposely turn them off. When I was asking around about the reason for turning off the head lights, I was told they do it so the ghosts don't see them driving at night. I also was told they turn them off to save fuel, which it doesn't.

  8. I'm sure many people on this forum have had similar experiences …..

So why did you expect yours to be different?

We all reap what we sow.

Can't help you. There is no good solution, and I feel no pity for those who cheat when they are in a, as you misrepresent it, "serious long-term relationship." I think you got what you deserved. I just hope your partner, didn't.

Wow, who invited you to be judge and jury?  This guy is asking a serious question and deserves a serious response.  If you don't have anything helpful to offer, then please stay off this forum!  I suppose you are in a position to cast the first stone, yes?

  9. Farang boyfriend or husband = ATM

The main reason MOST Thai girls want a farang relationship is for the money. "No money, no honey"

Yep, 3,500 for gas is inflated, but I'm sure she was hoping for spending money.

If you are hooked up with a Thai girl, then you are committing to paying for her and her families' expenses.

good luck, be generous, or count on needing to find a new Thai girl every few months.

  10. Yes, you should approach the school director and discuss the issue. But, the school director probably is aware this is happening and allows it. If you challenge the school director's and/or teacher's authority, then you need to take the boy out of the school and enroll into a different one. If you can talk to the police and ask them to handle it anonymously, then the boy will be OK in the future at the school. But the police will not do that. Your best option is to move the boy to a different school, and tell the director and teacher staff that this type of punishment is not allowed.

  11. I have a related question. My 12 month extension for marriage expires on Oct 15, but the US Embassy does their outreach in Udon also on Oct 15, which is when I get the notarized income verification. Is there a grace period? I need to go to the Nakhon Phanom immigration office to apply for the next extension. If I show up at the Nakhon Phanom office on the 16th will they penalize me? Or should I go to the outreach in Khon Kaen on July 16th?

  12. Toyota cars and trucks are typically under powered and over priced, although reliable, I wouldn't drive a Ford even if someone gave me one for free (Found On Road Dead; Fix Or Repair Daily; Freaked Over Rebuilt Dodge).

I really enjoy my Nissan, I purchased an upgraded Nissan 4-door for less money than a base model Toyota. Plus the gear ratio gives more power to the wheels, so you don't need to spend money on a bigger engine in order to get the muscle you need. My friends are liking their Isuzu trucks. I drove a Triton for a week and it rode well, didn't have any problems with it.

  13. There are some Infertility Doctors in Thailand that will freeze and store sperm. You pay an annual fee of something like 10,000 baht per vial. That is a consideration, since one ejaculation may fill many vials, and they will use one vial per artificial insemination, or IUI. Plus, they will want to do blood tests at the time of collection of the sperm to verify your health, that is an additional cost. Typically, it may take 2 or 3 tries doing IUI to get a girl pregnant.

The Red Cross in Thailand is the only official sperm bank. I know of a Doctor in Khon Kaen that stores sperm, but what you are asking for is unusual in Thailand. I also know of some Thai girls who would pay for your sperm so they can have a half farang/thai baby. Contact me via message if you want to know more.

  14. I don't want to generalize since there are always exceptions, but here goes: Thais seem to have a tough time getting away from the "this is the way we've always done it" syndrome. Creativity is not a strong trait for many Thais. Money always motivates them. Offer a cash reward for the person who comes up with a new and better way to get a process accomplished. Chances are you'll keep your cash. Have you noticed that they copy everything? There may be one person in a group that has some creativity, and everyone else will just copy them. Find that one person, and if he/she doesn't exist, then look for that person and import them into the group.

  15. There are only a small number of postings on Ajarn that are asking for a degree in English or related field. They always ask for the sky, but will accept less. If you have a TEFL and a college degree, you can easily get a teaching job. I have a BS in business, MBA, and a TEFL and am golden, I can teach English anywhere. My schedule is 100% full now and I'm still getting requests for teaching. i have seen English teachers from countries where English is not the native language, who can speak English OK, but their accent is soooo strong, I can barely understand them. But they are teaching English. Many Thai schools are desperate for English teachers that they may hire anyone who meets the minimum standards.

i will ask all English teachers to teach conversational English first, then focus on grammar. Let's get the kids speaking English, then worry about perfecting their English later.

I was able to retire young with a full pension, so I'm lucky, and don't have any issue with the maximum age requirements.

Best retirement, in my opinion, move to Thailand, teach English (having fun doing so), and play golf.

  16. I have lived around Ford trucks most of my life, and If someone gave me one for free, I'd sell it as fast as I could, then use the money to buy a Nissan.

Don't discount the Nissan Navara too quickly, it is a great truck, and you get a lot more truck and features for the money. I've been driving one for a couple of years and I love the 6 speed manual trans since it gives me nice power when on the farm, plus good over-drive when on the roadway. Do a comparison of the gear ratios on the different models, and you'll see how the Nissan gives you more power without a bigger engine to burn up the fuel.
