  1. 20000 THB fine??? Is that how much it is for killing 2 whites now? We better be careful now!!!

It just proves that it is better to kill of the people you injure in an accident because it is a lot cheaper... He killed someone, it does not matter how it happened, he should end up in jail for a long time!

RIP to the two fine souls- I have seen their web page many times as it is one of my dreams to do what they did (on a motorcycle though).

How many people in the Western World do long time after killing somebody in an accident??? Not many; and most do no time at all, even if they were drunk at the time.

All they have to do is hire a connected lawyer and do a weep & wail in front of the judge.

    No better than Thailand.

    Correct.

An accident is an accident. Killing somebody on purpose is a whole different thing.

Personally I find the fine of 20.000ThB low, but a prison sentence of 10 years is rather harsh. That will not solve his driving skill.

Revoking his driving license and sending him on obligated defensive driving courses might help on the other hand. At least, that's how they do it over here.

If it were my parents in their place, I would not be revengeful to the driver, but I would plead for a revision of the Thai traffic policy and driving test policy.

  2. This subject would be fantastic for a documentary on Thailand and tourism. There was another article recently about Ladyboys being allowed to dress as girls for a graduation ceremony at a school or university. Where else in the world would this be allowed or happen? It would cause an uproar in every place I can think of, except in Thailand. If the moral constraints of society are relaxed, people will do a lot of things they secretly want to do, like have sex with a transgender, where if they did so openly in their own country they would be labeled or attacked, mostly likely.

You are slightly wrong here, there was a case this summer In the UK where a "boy" legally won the right to sit his exams in a dress.

More than slightly wrong. Transgender people openly live their lives dressed as their true sex in a number of countries these days. Not saying it is easy for those who can't pass as the new sex. Thailand is not as advanced as many people think. Gay and trans people are openly mocked on Thai t.v, by leading Thai politicians, and they don't enjoy any legal protections against discrimination. Trans people can't change their IDs to their true sex which is something which trans Thai activists have identified as their first primary goal. They aren't even close to winning it.

That might be true. But Thailand is the first country that truely ACCEPTS lady boys, gay, lesbian, etc. in lots of other countries they are 'endulged' to live. Might even have rights, but seeing the latest homophobic attacs here (belgium) those laws don't mean squat. People still die, even if the attackers are in jail.

I would rather be accepted then endulged, even with a law promising to prosecute all discriminators or attackers.

  3. I would. Perhaps, I will?

I am in Belgium though. I cannot just disappear for a week to go to Thailand to do some shopping. I have planned a month in thailand over newyear though.

It seems quite unstraightforward to get a decent search result out of google.

Perhaps I should even be a bit more clear. I am not looking for pants and shirts. I've attended some beautiful Thai weddings, and I'm really into that 'topless' kind of thing for men.

  4. Yes just ask your future wife and if it's not her wedding then ask a Thai you will be attending with.

As far as "Thai casual dress" goes, I hope you are not one of the farangs that thinks he is Thai and will walk around your village in "Thai" clothes? The typical casual dress Thai's wear is t-shit, shorts and flip flops.

No, I'm not going to marry. Nor am I, at the moment, attending any marriage / official seremony.

I will releave you of your stress. I am not going to walk around in Thailand wearing things I have no right to wear. I know how people dress these days.

The reason why I'm interested is because I genuinly like the clothing style, and I try to get to know a bit more. I'd also like to acquire it if possible. Using them would be purely for private occasions :)

The site ThaiRich gave me is solely to plan weddings ... Something I hope I'll never have to do. Yes. I am that kind of person. I am sorry. I enjoy my life with my friends.whistling.gif

    Any more information? smile.png

  5. Thanks Thairich. You are, of course, very correct. I am particularly interested by either the north or the south style of clothing.

For the research I have done already I came to know that a sarong is used for daily use. a secondary cloth worn diagonally over the chest may be used for more special occasions.

I am of course also very interested in the traditional Wedding dress which, as far as I recall, includes some metal pieces. Does anybody know the names of these pieces?

    I'm eager to learn :)

Since I am just a Farang, I feel I should in no way be meddeling in any Thai politics, so I would like to know what colours/motives are worn in some political-incident-free area's ...

  6. Hi,

I really didn't know where to post this, but here it goes.

I am looking for Traditional Thai Clothes. Here 3 events arise:

    - Traditional wedding for the groom

    - Traditional outfit for special events (festival, ...)

    - Traditional outfit for daily life.

I would very much like some examples.

Anybody know any good places where I can buy these? I am allergic to nickle so for any metal pieces I need them to be in genuine Silver or Gold.

Thanks for all advice / tips.

  7. Personally I lived in Phuket with my friend on a budget of 36K/month. We didn't had a broad life. We ate local food, drove by bike and went out to party once a month. We had to watch our expences a lot, but it was certainly livable. Of course, if you want to live as HHfarang does ... you need more money. but if you want to live a simple life, 30K should be OK. If your wife is going to do a job on the side, even better.

Note: We also rented our appartment, so if you plan on buying something you don't need to think about the rent.

I would certainly go for it if I were in your position.

  8. Asst Prof Thaweechai Kalasin, a lecturer, said the thesis was remarkable in that both students selected their own topic and its content was useful and would serve as a basis for further study in the future.

Where I come from that's not remarkable -.-

As in: Students picking their own topic AND then still being useful for further study ... in the future.

  9. It is quite possible that not only the image of Thailand as a country of great purity and innocence will be soiled by this incident, but the Thai people could be corrupted by the presence of porn in their country. Perish the thought that people are actually filming sex here. Since there is no sex industry to speak of, the elders, officials, and ministers have to work hard to make sure this does not spread, and give the women of this country any ideas. It could lead to a corruption of the clean spirit and morality of the people, and God forbid, tourists could start coming to Thailand to have sex with the local girls.

Amazing! you are a very convincing writer!

Anyhow. I think it's more the issue that the film crew and japanese actors didn't have work permits.

would also like to receive the url or title in pm pls :)

  10. In many countries around the world it is illegal to go topless. Not only in Thailand. In many countries around the world you'd get fined or jailed. If the casual farang has a problem with that, then perhaps they should look for another place to spend their holidays.Perhaps take a cruise boat. I guess it will be allowed there.

I think it is very normal NOT to show any nudity in the public. This is not backward. Only a citizen of the USA would plead for a 'permissive society' and 'down with cultural prudes'. Its very obvious why ...
