  1. Hi all,

I've got a hypothetical one for you.

Assuming that a house has been sold and all taxes have been paid including any capital gains accrued, would it be possible to send said funds to any account in the UK via SWIFT bank transfer?

I ask this because my wife doesn't yet have a bank account in the UK and the funds (from house and land sale) would be going to a foreigner's (my) account. I see legal wranglings here.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Ta.

  2. On the whole I couldn't care less what he does but there is one part of this story that makes me mad;

"He has a house in London"

Prick. He and his ilk do so much to try and stop farangs owning a house in Thailand. I would assume all the politicians own houses outside of Thailand. A-holes.

He didn't start the fire...it was always burning since the world was turning...:)

  3. "...unaffected by religious ideas and totally secular..."

I remember the mattayom science books in the astronomy section had the following statement...

"Space is very big and we understand little about it because it was made by God."

I believe the books were Malaysian. Maybe they've changed them and are including real scientific theories, such as Big Bang and Evolution, as explanations for big questions.

Then again they might also be serving up flying-pork too.

  4. Thank you all for your posts.

@VisaPlus, Yes, we've been living together in Chiang Mai since 2006 and this was made clear in the cover letter.

So, in the passport the lines read as follows:

"Type: VISA SPOUSE/CP - Spouse of myname myDOB"

"Observ: No recourse to public funds"

    It doesn't read (KOL REQ).

If the (KOL REQ) is omitted does this mean that she can't take the KOL test and then the apply for ILR?

    Thanks again you guys.

    Greg.

  5. Hi all,

My wife has just had her settlement visa approved. We have been married for over 4 years and living together for about 6. We've got 2 kids together. I showed ample evidence of this in the application and was kind of expecting the ILE visa. The visa type says 'spouse/cp'. Does this mean we didn't get the ILE one? That would be a shame...

Many thanks for whatever clarification you can give.

    Greg.

  6. Taking advice from foreigners or simply someone younger is just never gonna happen here. In fact, I doubt anyone from within the fence would dare show up a "superior" by making a suggestion to the contrary. Herein lies the problem that affects nearly every organisation and operation in Thailand. To make a difference you need incredibly BIG trousers. Even better if they come with some kind of vintage, period styling - maybe then you'll be heard;)

All people are equal - some are just more equal than others.

  7. Good folk of Chiang Mai,

I can come to where ever you are, pick you up and then go to the nearest internet cafe. I just need to use the PinSentry for 10 mins or so.

If you don't have one, please ask your friends if they have a Barclays iBank account and have the PinSentry handy with them here in Chiang Mai.

Good karma or glory in heaven await you (or, just a beer if you prefer;-)

    Many thanks.

    Greg. (see mobile number above)

  8. Good day to you all,

Calling any Barclays iBank user with a PinSentry living in Chiang Mai, I have a desperate request.

Our submission date for a settlement visa is this Monday 13th Feburary at Bangkok. I have not been able to print my bank statements because my PinSentry card reader has died on me. I really need to print these statements before this Friday.

If anyone is willing to let me borrow their PinSentry for just a short time I would be eternally grateful.

Please contact me (Greg) on 0897008035.

    Kindest regards.

  9. "It's a good idea that Twitter has this policy to take care and prevent its users from violating the law, because freedom of expression must not violate other people's rights or the laws in each country,"

All people are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Props to Animal Farm, George Orwell.

  10. Thailand's concept of teaching will be always be 'teacher' centred due to cultural choices by the powers that be. The authority figure giving the knowledge to not dissimilar students is the way it is and the way it's been for a long time. Suggesting a 'student' centred approach would mean individual assessment of students and a resulting plan tailored to the needs of each individual. In Thailand, the nail that stands out gets hammered down and individuals are thrust back into the melee of the classroom with little consideration for their unique abilities, needs and desires. Could you imagine a teacher having a detailed breakdown of all objectives that each student must meet before the end of the year, ha! Thailand even has a no-fail policy, which is simply determined at the end of the year with the question: Did the student get lower the 50%? If they did they automatically pass, without any real corrective action. This culminates in a worthless education and extremely low results in the O-NET and A-NET exams.

e-learning...tablets...student centred learning...maybe the fundamentals should be addressed first, like teacher training, higher salary and a decent policy for non-achievers.

  11. Religion doesn't make people good. It just makes them feel better about the dubious things that they do, as often there are mechanisms to alleviate the guilt, i.e. hail Mary's, making merit, etc. People are judged by their actions; many Thai parents who can afford it would prefer to pay someone to look after their kids and go golfing or shopping and maybe visit a special friend on the way back home in the evening. Still, Thai kids are expected to respect and obey characters of questionable quality throughout all echelons of Thai society, and on the face of it they do (for an easy life). There are a lot of dissident voices on Facebook. It's also a gateway to a wider world view where many different versions of the truth can be obtained. No wonder the culture creators are getting hot under the collar:)

  12. "Culture" in Thailand is just another word for the the oppression of feminine sexuality and equality. These media pundits are just singing the government's line on maintaining such a thing. Glad to see the people see it for what it is. A job. And one she is driven to do to make ends meet. There are many worse jobs, and for some the choice doesn't exist.

  13. Simply this: The police didn't get protection money from those bars as they always close on time.

I remember the stick that North Gate got when the no-smoking ban was enforced. It was over the top - brownshirts everywhere looking very pissed.

These places obviously provided the authorities with a easy target what with the farrang and muso-Thais enjoying themselves without paying the right people.

After a while (it's been 6 years or so) you really see what an oppressed, fantasy world this country is.

    My advice...stay in your bubble!

    Peace.
